Norse Mythology: Thor Fishing for Jormungnd (The Serpent of the World)
#NorseMythology #Mythology #SeeUinHistory #History #MythologyExplained
Wiki: In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr , also known as the Midgard (World) Serpent (Old Norse: Miðgarðsormr), is a sea serpent, the middle child of the giantess Angrboða and Loki. According to the Prose Edda, Odin took Loki's three children by Angrboða-the wolf Fenrir, Hel, and Jörmungandr-and tossed Jörmungandr into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent grew so large that he was able to surround the earth and grasp his own tail. As a result, he received the name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. When he releases his tail, Ragnarök will begin. Jörmungandr's arch-enemy is the thunder-god, Thor. It is an example of an ouroboros.

I had always enjoyed reading myths as a child, its both, highly interesting and highly educational. In this case, with Norse mythology, which i dont know much about, tells us about how people of Scandinavia thought and acted 1000 years ago and we can always learn how people work and how they might think and act today. Thanks for posting! ❣️

I think many people miss the point of this myth. It's very reminiscent of the Vedic story of Indra, and how he slew the dragon Vrtra and freed the waters after drinking Soma which empowered him to do so. Indra is the Vedic storm god. He rode a chariot and wielded a mighty club called Vajra. Thor is also storm god. He also rides a chariot and he wields a mighty hammer called Mjölnir. In both myths, the following motifs are seen: •Storm god must retrieve a batch of liquid •Storm god drinks beverage to refresh himself •Storm god fights dragon to get the liquid •Storm god brings the liquid home Something interesting to note is that Scandinavians generally replaced the mythic role of chariots with boats because Scandinavia was not a climate where chariots were useful, but where boats were. Indra fights Vrtra on a chatiot, Thor fights Jörmungandr on a boat. Whats very interesting is how different these stories are even though they both descend from a common story (if you're unaware, Vedanta and Heathenry both descend from the religion of Proto-Indo-Europeans 10,000 years ago and are very related, the same goes for Hellensim and other Pagan religions, though not all of them). I think the Norse version was probably told in a more entertaining light in the Eddas than it was by the actual Norse since the Eddas were written by Christians who perscribed no metaphysical meaning to them, but the skeleton of the Norse story and the Vedic story are identical.

@@thedarkstranger963 look up Survive the Jive on KZbin, he has many great educational videos on this stuff. He's politically conservative but most his videos don't show it, though some do but it's rare. I don't mind personally but some people might, but his channel is a gem if you can look past the few instances of political opinion. Another great channel is Jackson Crawford, he's an American professor and Old Norse specialist. He's very by the books and offers a lot of great resources. If you like to read, I recommend reading the 4 Vedas of Hinduism and then comparing the prayers, stories and rituals described in them to Norse stuff.
