The most frustrating part about this movie is that the concept is actually really interesting, but they decided to go all in on the comic relief that made ragnoroc different than Thor and forgot that to make a good movie it needs to be grounded and not just screaming goats and a disassembled head following them on there journey.

This was a messy one. In the end, Taika leaned a little too much into comedy. I was apprehensive about Jane as Thor, but that was handled well. And Bale was fantastic. But stuff like the recurring gag of the screaming goats was a bit much...

It definitely helps to think of it as the story being filtered through Korg's retelling. It's not that he lied about anything, just emphasized the silly and downplayed the serious. It's still not a great movie, but it's not as awful as some people make it out to be (things rarely are).

I really liked it actually. I'm a big GNR fan so I like the music, BUT I can't recall another movie that used only one band for every non scored scene in the movie. So I 100% understand those who hate the music choices. All in all, it's a movie that I can enjoy for years to come. When I watch it it's even better because I know how much hate it gets, but I genuinely enjoy it regardless. Two things I would absolutely change though is more Bale and less goats.

Many people find this movie too "quirky" or "cheesy"... Although it really wasn't my favourite, I think it helps when you watch it as a story (Korg's) told to children around a campfire. Then the "exaggerated" parts become ok, I guess... I find it "cute" now, after seeing a few times looking at it this way.

I find that someone's opinion of this movie is directly correlated to how funny they found the goats. They got me laughing every time and I loved the movie. The tone of the movie swinging wildly between grim and goofy wasn't a problem for me, probably because that mirrors my coping mechanisms, but also because I tend to appreciate that kind of contrast in stories. I do agree that the execution of this movie wasn't perfect, and certainly not as good as Ragnarok. I notice that you tend not to appreciate movies that lean heavily on goofiness (e.g., Guardians of the Galaxy), but I like that you don't mistake humor for insincerity. Thanks for sharing your critical eye with us.

Somebody else on another reaction mentioned that the entire movie didn't portray events as they actually happened, instead it showed things as Korg narrated by Korg, so viewed in that way the movie makes more sense tonally. It still leans far too much into the comedy though, and most of that comedy is just distracting rather than funny.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Thor: Love and Thunder. The influence of the '80s in this film was truly remarkable. It brought to mind classic films such as Conan the Barbarian (1982), Flash Gordon (1980), The Beastmaster (1982), Krull (1983), The NeverEnding Story (1984), Heavy Metal (1981), Red Sonja (1985), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Legend (1985), Masters of the Universe (1987), The Princess Bride (1987), and Willow (1988). The reference to Jean-Claude Van Damme's iconic mid-air split was delightful. I really enjoyed the use of Guns N' Roses in this movie. I've been a fan of Thor since 1987. In the end, I found Gor to be an excellent villain.

In an interview with GQ, Chris Hemsworth said about this movie, "I cringe and laugh equally at it. I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective." This has sort of informed my views on Love and Thunder. I don't hate the film -- I was so happy they brought Natalie Portman back and actually gave her something to do -- but the tonal inconsistencies make it hard to love, and some aspects are very cringeworthy (*cough cough Zeus cough*). The special effects don't really bother me, especially in light of what's still coming up. I won't spoil anything, but there is a particular special effect in a movie you haven't gotten to yet that will make you think, "Yeah, Love and Thunder actually looked pretty damned good, comparatively." In the end, I think it's the lack of focus that does Love and Thunder in, but I find that if I just shut my brain off and let it be its own thing, I actually have quite a bit of fun with it. Cheers!

Certainly not my favorite MCU movie, but I enjoy it. The over-the-top ridiculous humor balances out the tragic sadness of Gorr losing his daughter, Jane dying of cancer, Thor grieving his love with Jane, and Val pretending she's doing just fine after her loss all those years ago. It could have been a depressing movie, so instead they violently jerk you into a distraction. The whole story being told in an absurd manner is a reflection of Korg as an unreliable narrator. Plus the effort they put in just to include a throw-away Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson joke at the end is so unhinged that you almost have to respect it.

I totally see how this can be one of the weaker MCU entries for someone. It's one hell of a mess, from the comedy to the effects. What made me still enjoy it more than at least a few other MCU films, was that I could still feel the heart in there. It may be a bit of a shit show, but it's definitely not a soulless movie. I really liked the rom-com angle between Thor and Jane, the kids actually worked for me mostly and although we needed more of him, Christian Bale was outstanding as Gorr. But this honestly might go down in my ranking on a rewatch and tbh I'm not sure if I plan on rewatching it soon...or maybe ever. Though I feel that way about at least half of the MCU at this point, probably more 😅

Great reaction like always! You summed up pretty much everything as to why this movie recieved the harsh reception it got. My only problem was the harsh transition from silly comedy to dark drama! I suspect there is a pretty good movie sitting on the editing floor, somewhere, where they didn’t make the movie quite so silly. Fun fact the little girl is actualy chris hemsworth daugther and the wolf lady that Thor makes love in the beginning is Elsa Pataky chris hemsworth wife. Also one of the sons of Chris Hemsworth, appears in the movie for a few seconds. We can see him running in a scene where the hero is a child. Thor receives as a gift a pair of goats that scream outrageously. These goats are familiar to those who read the comics or know anything about Norse mythology, as they are the ones that pull Thor’s chariot. In the movie, despite their irritating howls, they are a fun detail. Keep up the good work.

The MCU likes playing with genres post Endgame. I’d say the best way to watch this, would be Friday/Saturday night at midnight. This is their “Adult Swim” film. If you watch it through those lenses, you can say, “Yeah, it’s a fun film.” Not my favorite Thor film. Becomes more understandable once you see it as Korg “narrating” what we’re watching. Can’t wait for your rewatch of the MCU & your analysis. People tend to forget that Phases 1 - 3 had their major flaws too that Fans took note of.

The problem I have with that is that they adapted the wrong source material if they wanted to with "fun film". The tone didn't fit the story. Jane's, Thor's and even Gorr stories have some tragedy to them, but you barely feel that in the film. Everything is too over the top silly and goofy, as Taika intended. I think it could have been a perfectly fine fun comic book movie if they just choose a different Thor storyline.

I was so disappointed with this movie coming out of the theater, to be honest. There was so much potential that was just straight wasted; Bale as Gorr shouldn't have been a one-and-done, the use of Mighty Thor, King Valkyrie, Immortal City...there was so much that could've and should've been used so much better! Add to that the fact that the whole movie just felt disjointed. Such a shame! I really enjoyed Ragnarok but I think Taika completely jumped the shark this time. I felt the same with Raimi and Multiverse of Madness; it just felt (to me, at least) like the directors were making the movies for themselves instead of the audience. Anyway..... You still managed to make it an enjoyable reaction, so fair play to you for that. Catch you for the next one EDIT: Oh, and those fucking goats........

So, this one was a really big miss for me, on the whole. There were things that I really enjoyed about it, but... Taika Waititi's comedy was just... intrusive in this one. Ragnarok wound up with a good balance, but he was just... too unleashed in this one. If I have any degree of animosity to this one, it is in what I've learned about the behind-the-scenes nonsense that absolutely set this up for failure. That, along with the fact that Taika was really condescending to the VFX artists, who he and the studio had really given an impossible task. The MCU community has really turned on Taika since this one came out... and I don't blame them in the least. The movie really does have an unpleasant level of tonal whiplash, though. There REALLY are some scenes that hit, like the stuff with Gor... and Jane and Thor together... but then you get the damn screaming goats, the goofiness with the gods, and... yeah. Korg. It all just really does everything it can to keep us from fully emotionally committing to the movie, and it suffers massively for it in the end. Really excited for I Am Groot, though!

The movie definitely isn't one of the best, but not as bad as some say imo. It definitely has it's moments, and the main drawback I have is definitely the constant, almost jarring, tone shifts throughout. I get that it was what Taika Waititi was going for, but if he had gone with a more Ragnarok level silliness, then it would've been better. The main reason I and many others believe it was that way, is because it was being Narrated by Korg, except the parts with Gorr. Also, Jane becoming Mighty Thor isn't too dissimilar to the comics, Instead of Thor putting a new enchantment on it, it was Odin's old one and each time she powered up, it would purge the Chemo from her and making the cancer more aggressive.

I think the studio interfered too much and they were too rushed and cut too much to slim down the run time. I feel like the movie had so much potential and it fell off. This is still not a bad movie for me and I really enjoyed the film overall but I can just think of a better version of the film that would have worked. One thing though Stormbreaker does not have an enchantment on it restricting its wielders to be worthy. Anyone can wield Stormbreaker. Only Mjölnir has that requirement, the only exception is Jane who is arguably not worthy and is only able to wield Mjölnir because of the enchantment Thor placed on it to always protect Jane. My criticisms about the film are summed up 1. Lady Sif was wasted. 2. Gorr should have been used way more and the overall tone should have been darker and heavier. 3. They should have killed Korg in that scene with Zeus 4. Valkyrie should not have been wishy-washy with wanting to die and then not joining Thor in the final battle because she would die? Very confusing character motivations 5. Tone down the Guns 'n' Roses Overall I like the concept but have some problems with the execution of the film. I enjoy Thor alot as a character and between him and Gorr the film was enjoyable for me.

Even though Kang is supposed to be the big bad for the foreseeable future, post of phase 4 just seem to be doing random stuff that is not setting up a larger narrative. I think Iron Man to Endgame was simply the most prolonged stretch of “Lightning in a bottle” and that may be behind us. But damn that was a ride! Yeah this movie was a mess. Some great moments, some great visuals, but it's all bogged down by some really wonky visuals and wayyyyyyy too much silly jokey jokes. Bale is great and he's just in a completely different movie, one that I would much rather have watched.

But it's an extremely Australian~NZ sort of flick, placing tragedy and comedy hard up against each other is extremely common in antipodean movies so this one felt very much at home for me.

No one seems to understand that the entire story/film is being told by Korg. That's why it's so weird with Stormbreaker being jealous and the like... It's all Korg's perspective.

Taika thought making a movie from Korgs pov would be funny. Its erratic and all over the place. The negative feedback has made him quite Marvel now. Chris wants to change direction with Thor as he also thought the movie had too much silliness. Although in defense of the goats they are from norse mythology lol. I also think they wantd to finalize the Jane storyline as well, but the movie should have been way more about that and Bale.

It's been mentioned that realizing from early on this was Korg narrating (forgetting Jane's name multiple times) it becomes easier to accept the silliness. The total disconnect in timber with the Gorr scenes then also makes sense in that in those parts Korg was absent, and we're getting the actual events, rather than Korg's perspective. But, I agree that it would have been nicer if the whole movie was in the more serious tone. The threat of Gorr getting to Eternity was universe-breaking, but we didn't get to stay immersed in that, which would have made the end hit harder. I know Chris Hemsworth wants to show his comedic talents more, but the Gorr story wasn't a good place to feature them. In some ways it feels like Waititi was trying to channel some of James Gunn's Guardians energy (especially when they were in the opening act), but he doesn't have the finesse about when to let some humor in and when to stay serious. Otherwise, looking past the Korg filter, the story was solid, and leaves open future appearances not only of Thor, but Love as the new God of Thunder with the Young Avengers being set up. p.s. if not mentioned elsewhere yet, the goats are part of the Thor mythology, even if not so noisy. Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr pull Thor's chariot (rather than boat), and he can dine on them, only to resurrect them with his hammer.

It's a movie so bad even Chris is like, "Yeeaaaaah, we missed the mark." Taiki took all the wrong lessons from the previous movie and just doubled down.

So Jane becoming Thor was because Thor told his hammer to always protect her, no matter what. When she's in grave danger, because of her cancer, Milnojr responds the only way it can protect her, by giving her god like strength. We even see the hammer glow after Thor tells it to protect her. There's not a ton of build up, but it makes sense.

There’s a special place in hell for whoever decided to not only include the screaming goats at all, but to also keep repeating that joke that wasn’t funny in the first place. So annoying.

I was also disappointed we didn't see the Egyptian gods here. They play a role in the god butcher story in the comics. Missed opportunity to incorporate Moon Knight in the MCU proper...

Ok let be honest with this movie I’m not a big of fan this movie but I think to much comedy not even enough action I will give it 2 out of 5 stars and yes the screaming goats. It’s a little too much for me.

I have a headcanon that while the power of Thor is only granted for a limited time only, the enchantment itself lingers on the improvised weapons. In years to come, the little girl will grow into a young woman, who donates her stuffed rabbit to a charity shop or children's home, hoping it will give other kids the comfort it gave her in her ordeal. And the rabbit will find its way into the hands of other endangered children, who want to get home, or want their home to be safe, and grant those children the power of Thor.

If there had been less comedy it would have been a lot better. Gorr the God Butcher is not a character that should have comedy within a light-year of him.

There are certainly some misses in this film. I think Taika needs someone to tell him no once in a while. But it does help me enjoy it to contextualize this movie as the korg retelling of the events the whole way through and not take it at such a serious face value

@@macfine I think when they choose a director they should let them do what they want though, otherwise that's just denying an artist the freedom to paint and there's no point in making it, I'm not even an art person and I think in most cases it's not about us the viewers, the important thing is at least some people will for sure like it.

Funny, you should say that. It's not the first time Marvel, or the directors here, have chosen to add elements or flourishes from other Marvel stories into these movies. If a person wasn't into comics, s/he wouldn't recognize the story beat where Thor finds the Hulk on another planet in Thor: Ragnarok. That story was fleshed out in the comic World War Hulk ( which i highly recommend). Or that Jane Foster had her own comic book story as Thor. But they don't tell you these things in the movies and if they're not incorporated well, they tend to feel out of place.

Not an MCU movie I rewatch. Saw it in theater and that was it until this reaction. Bale is so good and wasted, the council of gods thing was shoe horned in to set up the post credits and a storyline that will likely never happen, Portman did well with what she was given but her fate was so rushed…probably should’ve been spread out over at least two movies and I didn’t care for the final battle. Obviously the humor was relied on too heavily and I think a lot of the gags in this movie would work if they were done once. Screaming goats once? Funny. Screaming goats a dozen times? Not so much. I understand the thinking behind the direction though. Ragnorak, which I love, relied heavily on humor and it completely reignited people’s interest in Thor after the let down of Dark World. Multiply it ten fold, how could it fail? All that said, I am happy Hemsworth recognized that they went too far with the humor and pretty much booted Watiti from future involvement saying Thor 5 (if and when) needs to go in a different direction. I have liked a good portion of everything post Endgame but this ain’t it. Respectfully, IMO of course. And of course, thanks for all of your hard work and letting us in on your honest reactions and thoughts.

I hate this one with passion. I really don't understand how they're not embarrassed for this to be the final product they sell. Especially it hurts because of the great bits, it's so unfair that we can't see them in a good film. As another reactor put it: there's a really good movie hidden inside this thing and I wish I could watch that.
