3:13 I love that moment of hesitation from Odin as if he's considering whether or not he should go through with his decision. It's ambiguous at the time the film came out, but after Ragnarok, I like to interpret it as Odin remebering what Hela became when her ambition was left unchecked and thus Odin decides to go through with exiling Thor in hopes he'll learn humility and the value of life rather than follow in his sister's footsteps.
@jackhutton5078 Жыл бұрын
I love that when you watch ragnarok you get this little call back and it makes it clear that in this moment Odin fears Thor will become another Hela I feel that his moments hesitation isn’t because he is considering Hela and realising what he needs to do. I think he’d made up his mind the moment thor started mouthing off. No, I think that hesitation is him thinking and trying to figure out where he went wrong. I also think it’s why he wanted to kill Loki in Dark World and had to be talked down by frigga. He blames himself for his children’s failings and feels that he has to punish them as harshly as possible because to him, if he doesn’t, he’s failing them again. He clearly loves all of his children but he knows he can’t let them get away with this shit, so over does it on the punishment so it doesn’t look like he’s showing favouritism. By the time it got to Loki he’s just realised he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong or how to change. The sad thing is, from everything we see he is as a decent parent. Not perfect, but there are worse parents out there. At the end of the day, he is not responsible for his children’s choices, they are. And at the end of the day, all three of his children were assholes at some point. And two of them got better.

@@jackhutton5078 Well... that and the fact that Thor probably would end like a arrogant and spoiled king that would claim Asgard as superior and most powerful. @jackhutton507811 ай бұрын
@@ptboxingagenda4536the way I see it is that Hela probably started off like Thor. Remember, Thor was all for war, he went to Jotunheim LOOKING for a fight, seeking out war, revelling in bloodlust just like Hela did. Loki wasn’t a narcissist at this point, he wanted approval, he killed is biological dad to try and impress Odin, they both were looking for war and conflict here but Thor wanted people to fear him like they feared Odin, and Loki wanted Odin to see him as worthy and figured that since he always favored Thor, that was the way to go. The issue with all three of his children that I can tell is they all wanted to emulate their old man, but took his WORST qualities to emulate. Hela wanted to emulate his bloodlust and violent nature. Thor wanted to emulate the fear he inspired. And Loki wanted to emulate his ruthlessness and cunning. And all fell short. The old god was more powerful than them all right to the end. There’s a reason Thanos didn’t do shit until after Odin kicked the bucket. Fun fact: Odin’s old for a reason.

Thor thinks his father a coward and an old man, and Odin responds with such force that he reduces a previously arrogant Thor to a whimpering ten year-old. Just look at the mix of fear and dIsbelief on Thor’s face when Odin comes down on him. I could only imagine the silence and awe on-set the day that Hopkins filmed this scene. A really badass observation here of Odin's total rule over the Asgardian realm is that his staff is one of the extremely few (2-3?) ways to summon the Bifrost.....dude REALLY wanted to get his hot-headed, dangerous son out of there 100% Also, credit to Mr. Hopkins, the way he throws Hofund to Heimdall, mixed with his loud berating, truly shows how pissed off he is that Thor did this to the Jotunheim.

3:10 I find this part of the teardown to be quite striking. Not only are the lines just before intense as hell and beautifully delivered, but the size difference between the two really makes Odin feel like this towering figure, this imposing authority. He is the All-Father. Anthony Hopkins (Odin) is 5'9. Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is 6'4. Between them lies seven inches of height and yet this image, with Odin standing on the steps of the Bifrost to stare down at his son, makes him look a mile higher than he is. That's brillaint framing. Thor is but a child to his father's wrath and godly strength in this scene. All his might and confidence evaporates when he is faced with someone truly powerful, someone he simply can't defeat, instead of someone for him to fight.

LitCaveman True that, I kinda wish a little more seriousness was in Thor 3 (I loved the heck out of that movie), because the acting here is superb. There were so many moments in Thor 3 where they could have opted to go for a more emotional take. The jokes were excellent but I miss the old "Phase 1" feel.
@nicktroisi63473 ай бұрын
Anthony Hopkins was just a genius casting choice for a character like Odin. He fit the role so perfectly and Anthony just steals any scene he is in. I love the way he delivers his lines when Odin is banishing Thor. You don’t just see but you can also hear and feel the mix of emotions such as his anger, sorrow, regret, even the tremble in his voice. He isn’t just doing this as The King of Asgard but also as a father, to his own son, it hurts him. Anthony Hopkins just manages to make Odin relatable to all the father’s out there and at the same time also a wrathful force to be reckoned with. Odin is someone you do not want to cross
