Idk, manga wise he’s top 3 I’d say. I’d say: 1. Miyamoto Musashi in Vagabond 2. Guts in Berserk 3. Thorfinn But in fiction? That’s a stretch. You have characters like Tony Soprano, Walter White, Sam and Dean Winchester etc.

Canute wants to “save” the Vikings by having them serve him and only fight when he commands, instead of fighting selfishly creating chaos all across the land. Like he said in season 1 “ serve me and I will give your life and death meaning. And work towards creating my paradise. That is the duty of a king.” Instead of their fighting and therefore lives do nothing but spread meaningless destruction. Under Canute there will be less/no pillaging, Vikings fight on the battlefield instead of ransacking and destroying villages and families, women and children are spared, the dead are sent back to their families, etc. And Viking who do not follow the rules and cause excess destruction are killed. It is not a perfect solution, but frankly perfect solutions don’t exist. Especially not back then. Turning the the Vikings from a bunch of roaming bands of bandits to a military force that served Canute and therefore his kingdom. Squashing “rebellion”, fighting off invaders, and protecting the land. Obviously there is a negative side to this that needs to be addressed but that gets into spoilers, so I will leave it at that.

Canute essentially is changing the system right from the top, the best way that he can
@hannessteffenhagen618 ай бұрын
Canute kinda wants a better world for all of humanity. He's focusing on the Vikings because they're his people, but he's not consciously disregarding everyone else, it's just with his super big picture thinking (he knows what he's trying to accomplish isn't possible within his lifetime) he kinda lost sight of the everyday stuff that affects people in the present. The "waves" in his metaphor is of course the world at large - including the people he commands. He can give orders as the king, but just because he orders something doesn't guarantee it will happen. If he orders all his vassals and warriors to turn peaceful overnight, all that's gonna happen is that he'll find himself stabbed, poisoned or "accidentally" hit by a stray arrow or something. Even if he were to succeed in turning his entire nation pacifist, there's still the entire rest of the world (or at least Europe) that would be kinda hard to deal with.

Also he literally has the oppurtunity to change the vikings, since he can inherit and rule over the Kingdoms of England and Denmark, the vast majority of people don't have that kind of power or influence so he can try to change the ways of the Norse for the better

Canute wants to save the most people he can, Viking warriors too He is a bit delulu but to to think that thousands of years of religion, status quo, oppression, slavery and war are wrong you kinda need to be delulu (most of my family still thinks that me and my brother are delusional because we went to Syria and Palestine to help out)

well, Olmar was not ok because he was privileged by power but because his brother took him to ambush Canute by sea and couldnt swam all the way and washed up ashore.

*Canute reveals his ultimate goal: to build a paradise on Earth, which he views as an act of rebellion against God's logic.* ☮🕊🌍 He believes that humanity can't find happiness under God's rule and that the current state of the world, filled with chaos and destruction, is a result of people being abandoned by God. Canute sees the Vikings, who are known for their violent and destructive behavior, as a prime example of this abandonment. He believes that these people, who commit sins as they wander lost, need to be saved in order to build a true paradise. To achieve this, Canute plans to unify and guide the Vikings, using their combined strength to defy God's rule. He sees himself as the only one capable of this task, and he is willing to go to great lengths, including war and conquest, to accomplish it. 🤴🏼👥👥👥 In essence, Canute's statement about defying or fighting God is a metaphor for his ambition to change the world order and create a utopia on Earth, contrary to what he perceives as God's flawed design. To better understand Canute you can think of the strict rules he imposes on his vassals; no looting, pillaging or dueling; all vices of Viking culture. All of these must be removed from his paradise. But to do this, he must first conquer all of the vikings to get them into the fold. Only once it's done will he be able to pacify them all, as he now wields all the power. *It's very much like Thorfinn's vision of a utopia, only Canute wants to seize it by any means necessary, with diplomacy first. They are two sides of the same coin.* Canute, for all intents and purposes, is a very progressive king. His display at the end wasn't to show how delusional he was but how powerless he was to do anything on his own.

Canute's plan for peace is way more realistic than Thorfinn.
@Dell-ol6hb7 ай бұрын
Not necessarily, Thorfinn's goal is pretty small scale, like he told Einar just a single village that he built with his own hands would do, sure he has the ideal goal of creating a nation without war or slavery but his starting point of creating a village to help atone for the lives he's taken is actually something he can accomplish. Canute has far moe power to accomplish his goal but is goal is also much more grand in scale, creating a paradise on Earth is virtually impossible for him to achieve though he could definitely make the lives of the people of his lands better for sure
@Celeborn937 ай бұрын
Silly comment. Thorfinn doesn't have a concrete plan to achieve peace. He himself admits that it's probably out of the realm of possibility, but he will strive towards it nontheless, doing what he can, starting with something small and realistic. And like Thorfinn says; he doesn't have nowhere near the power or forces that Canute has.
