Well if Cavia made Bullet Witch, they are the or were the only company that have pulled off full scale environmental effects with that bullet witch, where tornado and meteor storm were so epic even you could die from it if you get caught in the devastation. I actually really liked Bullet Witch because it was a decent game despite its flaws. I still sometimes put it on just to see the damage you can do with those epic spells. It's a real shame Cavia never did a Bullet Witch 2 or continued as a company. They could have gotten so much better.

The Drakengard games will always stay with me for how dark they are, they were my first games as a teen where I saw games tackle seriously messed up issues, including various taboos, which started showing me the video games as a whole could be a serious artistic medium and not just "things kids and teens played" (which was a common thought back then)

NieR:Replicant/Gestalt is my favorite game of all time, but out of all Yoko Taro’s games... I don’t think about any of them as much as I do Drakengard 1. There’s nothing beautiful, meaningful, sympathetic about the entire game. It’s nothing but vile, grotesque, and... quirky. Very quirky, but I kind of love it? maybe it’s just the whole atmosphere for me, it’s impeccable. The soundtrack. Cutscenes. And it’s endings are iconic. B, E, and in my opinion, especially D are some of my favorite endings in gaming. Drakengard’s 20th anniversary is next year, I hope it gets a remaster. With all the games getting (occasionally pointless) remasters now I’m just hoping my favorite stupid edgy drakenjosh game gets its chance, too.

@@Peannlui More like something which does work, but it a way which isn't intuitive and is difficult to get used to, and if approached in a wrong way gives off an impression of not working at all. As a Sonic fan I am very familiar with people saying stuff doesn't work when it definitely does if you don't try to play it the way they do, for example you aren't actually likely to fall through the floor in either Adventure or 06 if you aren't trying to go places you aren't meant to. The loop in Emerald Coast is very jank, always working correctly if you simply press forward, and always killing you if you do anything else, which isn't good for a first level where the players don't yet know how to play or if a 2D Sonic fan tries to spin through it. It's not broken as that's how it was designed, but it's glitchy, punishing, and counterintuitive, and that's what jank means to me.

Cavia has long been my favorite dev of games that are really not my favorites. Drakengard gave me literal headaches. Bullet Witch's aiming controls frustrate most of the fun out of the game. That said I also find them incredibly charming(?) in a way that makes me want to love them despite the reality of how hard they push me away once in-game. Very good video. I never played Bullet Witch, but I love how much you talked about Bullet Witch. My jaw fucking dropped at the building explosions and rubble flying everywhere - I love that kind of destructible environment stuff in games like Earth Defence Force, Otogi or the DBZ Tenkaichi games, and this is such a wicked cool extreme example of that. AND IT'S ON PC?! Why have I only just learned this?! I was also immensely pleased when you were talking about the music for Drakengard. As you were discussing the emotional state of the music, I was thinking to myself "hmm, maybe the music in Drakengard is scoring things from how Caim sees things", and then you said the music could be the music in Caim's brain. What a fucking mind-meld, heck yeah.

I'm fucking crying. I've played NieR Gestalt looong before automata was a thing, and it destroyed me to see it be buried under automata's big ass androids or whatever. It only got somewhat little recognition after that big replicant remake was anounced. For me it was one of the comfiest experiencest ever. Going around town meeting people and doing their quests, even the fishing ones. Just strolling around with the music which could easily go from chill to combat dynamicly and still fit the whole atmosphere it was going for. Lol sry for goshing, but it was about time gestalt got some recognition.

I think those looking for Cavia and drakenguard you should look into Ace Combat 3, effectively Cyberpunk Dragoon. The director of ace 3 became the CEO of Cavia. He also brought one Yoko Taro from Namco to Cavia. Ace combat 3 Electosphere is known as being the most out there ace combat game with 5 endings, intertwined characters and factions. Though the Us and EU version of the game got mangled in localization taking out all the plot, so you should look for the Project Nemo translation patch.

Geez, if I ever needed a game to exemplify why I'm weird and have freakishly abnormal tastes...it'd be "Drakengard" with how I enjoyed playing it. Like yeah, it slogs at points since some maps indeed are too big at times, not to mention leveling weapons can become messy since it skews badly by endgame. But the gameplay was never something I felt hampered my enjoyment. Heck, to this day, I still fondly recall repeating the 2nd ground mission over and over again since it was great for ranking up kills to level weapons, especially if you managed to take down the secret timed enemies. Like damn, I even lent the game to my cousin and he got into the series as well. Liked it just as much as I did. So as a result, it always gets to me how nearly everyone I ever hear talk about the game mentions how "bad" of a game it is. How so many people are happy that Cavia shut down since they were "terrible" developers. It's caused some pretty awful cognitive dissonance for me, especially as this feeling has since spread to basically everything else I enjoy now. Second guessing basically everything now.

Great look at a very overlooked company. Cavia had a hand in a lot of jank that I adore in hindsight while during the initial release only really picked up out of curiousity to find a weird sort of appeal that helped teach me what kind of vibes I enjoy in my gaming. Still a bit astonished that Nier is actually a well regarded title these days as I got it from the bargin bin and considered it an overlooked gem for years. Bullet Witch was also dope as hell for the time, was early in the HD gaming era and when we saw this random ass game come out at only $40 my friends and I had to give it a shot.

I'm so glad games like Bullet Witch are being brought back, and games like Travis Strikes Again are being made. Indies are great, but I've always kind of missed that single to double A jank found in these older games from an era where you weren't really shit unless someone else was occasionally pulling your strings, so you had to be a little more creative about how you put cool and interesting jank systems and whatnot in your games. That level of care and effort that you can tell far surpasses given budget at given time. Just a very cozy feel for games to have, and one of my favorite things you cover on this channel. I mean, I love all of your videos and consider you to be one of my current greatest inspirations, because you do things your own way with incredible style, writing, and attention to detail, similarly to the games you cover, but there's a special spot in my heart for those games that seem to ethereally emanate that feeling of overflowing passion on a slow and often very small trickle of budget.

Man I recently spent SO much time getting the on-rails RE games on the PS3 to work. I bought the whole move system, some killzone branded move guns (1 of them is still lost in the mail), re-hacked a ps3 and tracked down the roms, it was so worth it though. The controls felt surprisingly good. Would have probably been cheaper and easier on Wii, but I don't have an upscaler or a working Wii U. For sure a mind blow that it was made by the nier people though!

Compare to many Japanese games where anime designs are the norm, I’ll give Cavia credits for their use on realism in many forms and grittier tones, especially how I compare the company to Koei-TECMO’s Team Ninja and to a lesser-extent of their side-studio Team Tachyon…

@@MarsofAritia It felt less of The FF games and more on the realism aspect of Silent Hill, to a lesser extent of Metal Gear Solid...

I actually liked Bullet Witch for some reason it was fun going around shooting things and the scenes and story wasn't that bad for its time, and to this date no other game has made such epic full environmental spells that can even kill you if your unlucky lol ooh the only problem I found with the game was the 1 hit kills from the snipers yeah I bet you all was like wtf lol
