Bruh i think white day is the horror game I've been looking for since i was a kid. This was on our families shiny ass vista laptop. I once saw this game running on it when my dad walked away from the laptop. Played it for a couple of minutes, but i could never find it in the past 10 years. That lighter in the dark hallway with the heart monitor in the corner was seared into my brain for years. I finally know now. This truly is the only channel that i could find a game like this.

The only thing I hate about remake culture is that devs almost never include the original game(s) when they update it for modern audiences. It always came across to me as kind of odd, because outside of special cases like FF7R it's not like playing the original alongside the remake will 'ruin' the experience for anyone. At best it helps contextualize what jank and skung the remake ironed out, and at worst it's a pseudo-tacit admission that the remake's team missed the mark in some places ("soul" as the cool kids are wont to imply)
@scaryhobbit211

And that's one of the reasons why Metroid Zero Mission is the GOAT of remakes. Not only does it remake the original Metroid and bring it up to Super Metroid standards, but they were kind enough to include the original NES game on the same cartridge.
@zadayaz
@zadayaz Жыл бұрын
yeah i think making the old games still accessible when remaking them should be the norm but unfortunately its more the exception in the industry. Game companies directly replacing older versions of their games with remasters (ie gta) i feel leads even more to the expectation from audience that a remake needs to be just like the original, which stifles what a remake can do without backlash. It’s unfortunate that game companies hate preserving their own products so much and making them accessible even if they are old so you have to emulate or scrounge ebay for a decently priced original copy most of the time

1:56 My problem with the idea that something can "age poorly/well" it that it takes for granted the assumption that art, as a rule, tends to get better over time and that it was on average worse before than now, which I don't think is true in any medium, games included.

@Forthelemon
@Forthelemon Жыл бұрын
@@smergthedargon8974 Not sure what you mean by "design issues" as something unique to games; any piece of art can have "issues" in its formal aspects. A game can have clunky and unresponsive controls; a painting can have sloppy perspective work and poor composition; none of these things are particular to any given era. As for tech, that's neither unique to games nor necessarily an issue. It's true that in the 1930s most studios did not have the option to make movies in colour, but that doesn't make movies from the '30s worse than movies now because colour isn't necessarily better than black-&-white, it just happens to have been invented later. Similarly, games in the '80s did not have polygonal 3D as an option, but that didn't make them worse because 3D isn't necessarily better than 2D just because it requires more advanced tech. Technological progress in a medium can expand the scope of what can be expressed but that doesn't mean it improves the quality of the expression.

@@Forthelemon "design issues" as in "game design issues". Games have MORE things to them in terms of actually making them than any other medium.
@zadayaz
@zadayaz Жыл бұрын
@@smergthedargon8974is along with general audience sensibilities on whats “fun” . Back when games were far more niche and there simply were less out so there was less variety in design and gameplay experiences people were more willing to play games that could be aggravating or demanded tons of grinding. Nowadays a lot of the kids who grew up with those games are adults and probably dont have time to invest in stuff like that when now theres other games that made with the intent of making the player experience smoother. Obviously im generalizing a lot and neither of these things is strictly good or bad design or whatever, but as the medium evolves different trends will emerge and with games being an interactive medium design choices that have fallen more out of fashion will be viewed as more grating to players. A more extreme version of the fact that the average moviegoer nowadays is unlikely to want to sit through a silent film since theyre used to having sound. like older fighting games often lack a lot of things that have emerged in genre over time as designers iterate. Stuff like assist modes, input macros and buffers, combo scaling, etc. are all made so that these games are more generally approachable and enjoyable for a range of people outside of diehard fans. So for people who lose these things when trying out an older game, or simply someone who maybe used to play without them but grew accustomed to and enjoyed their presence, yes older games are going to feel as if they have “aged poorly” even if the design decisions made during that games development made perfect sense at the time. all of this basically boils down to the fact that whats considering fun and enjoyable is nebulous and up to individual opinion in the first place, and what may be a poorly aged game to one person more used to more modern gameplay design may be an enjoyable return to form for another. I think saying something “aged poorly” makes more sense when you view it as someone saying that the game being a product of its time makes it harder for them to enjoy personally, rather than “this game is old and outdated so therefore its bad” (even though some absolutely do use it like that)

You only mentioned it once briefly, but now I am really missing the vibe of Fable. Those games, especially the first two, had this kind of weird British Humor vibe that you just don't see anywhere else. I'm not even sure I actually 'enjoy' it. It's more that I just miss it existing. Does that make any sense?

I've been playing it lately, in the little free time that i have off work, and it's quite the good "healing" game. It feels like Gothic, with a Zelda art style and lore, throw some The Sims on the mix, in how the npcs feel alive and go around their own routine. I'm enjoying alot just walking around, slowly grinding, finding gifts to give to girls, basically just existing in that world.

Fable in general is a very "of-its-time" thing that a lot of people look back upon as trash when in actuality not a single game has been able to replicate its very specific aesthetic and tone. I unironically think it's the closest to a fantasy GTA as we'll ever get but most just see the light RPG elements and marriage mechanics as being poorly implemented ambitions from a hack ideas guy. The game itself is still really freaking cool

Originals are cool, remakes are cool, re-imaginings are cool, remasters are cool, spiritual successors are cool. If the underlying experience is good - it's essential. Whether or not the fact of a game (or any other media) being a "re-something" adds to your experience is a matter of personal preference and circumstance, but no work of art cancels out another work of art. As was fairly pointed out in the video. Remakes might be naturally capitizing on nostalgia, however, as a gamer, you can benefit from everything. In moderation that is. What makes a gamer (or rather a person overall) a "boomer" is not being a target demographic for nostalgia-fueled products but rather losing curiosity, being afraid of changing things, and accumulating a thousand little paranoyas about everyting. In other words, closing off makes you a "boomer", and no remake will make you happy. Being curious of both old and new, accepting of both old and new, enjoying both old and new, is a cure. We all need to apply this cure as we move on through times. And enjoy ourselves to the fullest.

@AestheticGamer
@AestheticGamer Жыл бұрын
Happy you don't outright hate the Yume Nikki reimagining either, it's a different experience but there was a lot I liked about it. For the White Day Remake, as someone who has played both pretty extensively, the Janitor behavior was most certainly NOT wholly unchanged. The remake does some things better, but tunfortunately the two most consistant enemies (the Janitor & the Floating Head ghost) are both done a lot worse in the Remake. The Remakes did update multiple times to change the AI & functions of both due to feedback, but unfortunately they still pale to the original. The three things that both functionally get worse is presence, sound design & darkness. Presence is the easiest to describe, despite knowing the original WhiteDay pretty well I have probably run into the Janitor and been in "chase mode" more often in the Remake by, no joke, something like 500% more often than the original. I honestly don't know what's going on under the hood to make this occur, if its the pathing or if the AI in the remake homes in on your location more often, but he pops up a lot more in the remake than he did in the original. The sound design also hurts them I feel, in the original the Janitor didn't have a "chase theme", he'd just make his jingling key noises & his grunts as the ambience of the game happened. In the remake whenever he's in a radius of you, his theme starts playing, which at least imo takes a lot of listening out for him and the tension of him away. The Floating Head Ghost suffers a LOT in these two departments as well, she spawns FAR more often in the remake than she ever did in the original, and they changed her sound effect to the sound of paper tearing to this kinda' ghastly wind sound. The worst thing is what happens when she catches you though. In the original you'd hear the sound get closer and closer, then suddenly you'd take damage and hear a slight giggle, which combined with how rare she was would throw you off to think what the Hell was even happening. In the remake, she does a FNaF style jumpscare where her whole face takes up the screen and she shrieks at you. Startling the first time, but gets annoying (similar problem to the locker ghosts in the remake, which I like at first but are far too consistant and basically just a jumpscare). The darkness aspect hurts the Janitor a lot especially though. In the original they used hard darks and bright lights for dark/light areas, which is an aesthetic I overall prefered, but additionally the Janitor actually usually couldn't see you in the dark as long as you were being quiet/didn't have a light source out. For whatever reason in the remake this function was removed, so now he usually will see you in the dark and start chasing you, and you can't run into a dark room to hide, you usually have to go to one of the set hiding spots (like toilet stalls usually, which also weren't automated hiding spots in the original). I'm already rambling, but its a case I can see someone who passively watched the original game being like, "Yeah, I see, Janitor chases you just like the original", but a lot of the details changed between the original & remake to make the actual gameplay experience quite different, and imo for the worse which makes him more annoying than anything. There are changes the remake does which are much better than the original, such as the boss fights as you mentioned, but also I tend to think the story was improved (both the cutscenes and the new secret story route in the remake with the new secret second playable protagonist is nice too in what it adds). It's not a case the remake is worse than the original, and in many ways its way more accessible than the original, I love some of the new ghosts and hidden content, story additions, changes. But one area the remake 100% suffered in was with its two most consistent enemies, & in my opinion in atmosphere and lighting. But is what it is, I like both ultimately.

Personally I believe the best type of remakes are indeed those that are trying to be much like the original, but that also have as a priority to bring its vision to its fullest in ways the devs couldn't do at the time, best examples would be *Metroid: Zero Mission* (the original was more of an experiment rather than an actually fun exploration game, with repetitive map design and dreadful grinding for pickups _after every reload)_ and *Pokémon HeartGold&SoulSilver* (which added back all of the cut Kanto areas and even added some more of its own). Take a flawed game and make it what it was always meant to be. The problem I think is that publishers will only care to remake games that were already excellent back in the day because it makes the easy buzz and money, even if a remake is completely redundant or might shit on the legacy of the original *(Silent Hill 2 remake* comes to mind). Sadly it's very hard to see, say, *Formation Z* (the most basic shoot'em-up ever on every single Famiclone) getting a remake, because taking the ideas and the _potential_ of the original into something actually good is the easy task since it's a game no one is fond of, but precisely because there's no nostalgia for it they can't get anyone hyped up about it and make lots of money.

Yes! And those types of remakes kinda invite you to play the original. Zero Mission is probably my favorite Metroid and I then went on to play the original, being curious about the paradigm leap, and I think metroid 1 is kinda special, is an experiment, people say it kinda failed, but in it you kind of see the ambitions of the developers and the faith they had in the medium and how they wanted it to evolve. Playing super metroid after the original is something I should've done, seems like a really revealing experience. I also played the Metroid 2 3ds remake, and it also kinda made me want to play return of samus on the original GB, haven't done that yet but I'll play it soon I hope.

I was surprised when I saw that Yume nikki was free on steam. God damn White day... If it wasn't for the janitor, I would totally play the game. I hate chase sequences that are integral to the gameplay.

I think 1:1 remakes can be a good thing, but they're often used as an excuse for not rereleasing the original games. I wish companies actually released their older games on modern platforms so they're easily available.

@@lostuser6410 God no. Same with anything, you can't control the corporate monster 😅 I love old games as well I just prefer to play them on original hardware when at all possible. I want remakes for things we never got Or things nearly impossible to get these days 😅 Panzer Dragoon Saga is a good example and we STILL don't have anything 😂

I also think that “materializing” a monster takes away most of the fear and tension. I remember watching the movie “Signs”, afraid and fully stressed until they show the petty alien, they even beat it with a BAT, just water and a a fricking baseball bat!! 😅

Reminder that human beings are responsible for making video games, and human beings tend to die like a lot, or otherwise don't want to be chained to one creative output for their entire life, and that remakes are used as a way to train up new generations of developers and creative leads for future projects while retaining the magic of what made something good in the first place all those years ago
