A patch released just a couple days ago that dramatically improves the framerate in the open world, so I think it's safe to say it was never a design choice and was always just ToyBox being ToyBox. I noticed a lot of people trying to claim that the bad FPS was an inherent part of Deadly Premonition when it was never an issue in the original 360 version, just the ports ToyBox handled. I think framerate could be used to convey ideas or emulate a certain style like you said, but nothing about this game felt like it was trying to emulate old video games to me and the lack of consistency across the board showed it was never a stylistic choice. The open world sections legit gave me a headache a few times and I'd have to stop playing for a bit.

@noahmckay15994 жыл бұрын
@DrMecha Isn't that kind of a contradiction? You're basically saying a person should ingore the bad framerate and that it shouldn't be a factor when enjoying this game when clearly for a lot of people can't enjoy this game because the bad framerate makes them feel ill. I even think you might misundering his point in the video which that he is saying that gameplay should serve everything else and not that everything else should be used to serve gameplay. Since framerate is a part of gameplay then that means a framerate that doesn't function as it is supposed to which is this framerate isn't because they released a patch to fix the framerate implying that the framerate wasn't to be suppose to be that low in the first place. Thor was able to enjoy it was because he is used to be framerates and it doesn't bother him as much. So basically what you're doing is ingoring parts of Thor's agrument and misrepresenting it so that it becomes "framerate shouldn't be a factor in enjoying this game" when the agrument was "framerate shouldn't be only factor in enjoying this game."

I get your point with low fps being used to serve a point, like to homage ps1 games and such, but in the case of DP2 it is insanely clear that it was not done for that purpose. Toybox clearly just doesn't know jack about stuff, doing the bare minimum to fulfil the creators vision, and then any time people try to call them out for it it will be followed up with "hey it was intentionally like that". There's low frame rate done for an artistic or meme point, and then there is just incompetence.

This game visually seems to have a little too much polish and no longer creates that perfect lightning in a bottle scenario of so bad it's good like the original. It looks like the makers of this game tried their best to replicate with the old game did, without realizing that a large amount of the original games charm was in the amateur presentation. Not to mention, that the original game didn't have framerate issues like this. I actually love traversing Le Carre and soaking in it’s minutiae but the load times, low frames, and momentary freezes, which make me worry the game is going to crash (thanks DP1 Switch port), combine to make it a very tedious experience. It’s a shame because this IS a good game but when I can still point to the 360 version of DP1 as the standard bearer for solid technical performance of the series and it’s sequel released 10 years later doesn’t even come close to it well that’s uh...a bit messed up lol. Your discussion on framerate left out something important. I also grew up playing old low framerate games. Most of us did, the n64 Zelda games were locked at 20fps iirc. The thing that made them okay is the lock. Variable framerates that vary wildly have some very real concrete bad effects: they make your expected control inputs weird, because the input lag is effected by the update rate of the image on the screen. This frequently results in frustration, headaches, and nausea. From what I'm seeing in this video, DP2 is willing to jump from 60 fps to 6 depending on what's on screen, and that's really, really bad. That makes the game physically feel worse for a lot of people, and can physically make them sick or in pain. That goes beyond the bounds of an artistic choice imo.
@thorhighheels4 жыл бұрын
yeah i didn't actually know low fps could make someone physically ill. I absolutely would've mentioned it if I did. tho if a game wants to make someone physically feel bad to convey something, a game could still then use that as a deliberate choice, specifically for that purpose. not saying dp2 at all tries that mind u, but i don't feel that makes it go beyond the bounds of artistic choice at all.

Been looking forward to your take on this for a minute. I put in a good ten hours and been meaning to get back to it, hopefully this week, and it's given me this interesting feeling. It's like returning to a place one vacationed at as a child, they have a distinct version of it in their head only to find the reality being a mishmash of different yet familiar.

Small correction, we’re never introduced to David’s “owner of the hotel personality/occupation” which I am still quite miffed about! But only a little.

The first time I realized you can get hit by cars is when its get late and so she'll stop and tell you that she needs to go home, mid sentence a car hits her and she just completely disappears out of existence even while the dialog was still going. I was so confused.

So I wanted to go in on this, as a fan of Swery and other DP game. I don't mind unstable gameplay but I've seen multiple bugs some even preventing from finishing the game. Did recent patches fixed the major bugs, or do you still risk major progress loss while playing?

when i go to a movie theatre (back when we used to do that), and the film isn't lined up in the projector properly, that's a vibe, and who am i to say *every* movie should have the film fully projected on the screen.
@thorhighheels4 жыл бұрын
i mean someone who grew up going to a shitty ass movie theater erry week may have vibes related to it, that they'll then express in their work later on in life on purpose. anything can be an artistic choice. doesnt mean that u have to like it obvs but still. id rather keep an open mind to shit like that.

28:12 Dude, did you just call old pixel art garbage in the same breath you used to defend poor frame rate? Even PS1 games tried to reach 30 FPS, usually. Original Mega Man or Castlevania? Garbage. Having your average frame rate on the clock? What a bold artistic expression!
@Rihcterwilker4 жыл бұрын
You're taking "garbage" to it's literal meaning, which is not the case here. It's just artistic license, Thor tends to say alot of stuff is "garbage", which really means something like "not to the standards of your everyday AAA game".

Can you review 'Vroom in the Night Sky' for Switch? It was a launch title, and it is pretty bad, but incredibly charming, and actually surprisingly fun to play and beat.
@MrGrayNk4 жыл бұрын
Have you finished the game? There are 4 dungeons, not 3. And I have a lot of trouble calling the plot very well built having seen what fuckery goes on in the fourth chapter. As for the framerate: there's a difference when it's low on purpose and when it's just a rushed game, with not just low fps, but freezes that makes my head hurt, crashes and softlocks. I was waiting for the minigames softlock to be patched for two weeks, because I just couldn't progress. And I was not able to finish three side quests because they bugged out. And I had to replay a lost hour of progress when it simply crashed. There's a lot of rationalizing going on in this video. It's cool that you liked it in this state, but maybe people should know a bit more of the downsides to not get burned by a glowing review like this. As for me, I very much enjoyed the first chapter. After that it just felt like going through the motions just to see the clusterfuck that was the ending (the scene after the credits was great tho). I felt it was a big step down from the first game, at least storywise
