The writing for the About An Elf section is absolutely stellar. It's some of your best yet. "The game manages to tell a tale of Internet writing gone wobbly; Not in an edgy "Channer" way, but in a... Post-Tumblr, post-9gag, post-ironic, scathingly, genuinely nerdy aging Millennial theatre kid humor. 'We will use old cat meme phrases and overly poetic waffling garbage talk, and le funny deadpan because we think it's funny'. It's not a lineage I belong to... Part of my soul died of cringe when Roland uttered the word 'awesomesauce.' But In that, it also weaponizes the nonchalant, carefree Internet-y tone to deliver an adventure unlike any other." Also not sure if anyone noticed but About An Elf uses that weird, stereoscopy visual effect when it's characters move, and with the DAZ renders I think it adds an extra layer to the uncanny nature of it.

'About An Elf' reminds me so much of 'WTF: Work Time Fun' and the Katamari games. Definitely fits that weirdly specific 2002-2006 era of humor and art design. This is one game I definitely will have to pick up.

I agree so so much with you about controls. I miss the days of experimental control schemes where you did have to come to grips with it. I've always loved how MGS2 controlled for example. The other obvious thing that people hate nowadays but I still love are tank controls, at least in the right setting.
@Chronis672 жыл бұрын
Agreed on MGS2. I remember being really confused when the HD collection came out, and people were complaining about the controls of it and 3. I get that they aren't the generic control scheme of today, but they feel great within the context of what that game is. Same with RE4.
@dudestep2 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in metal gear solid 2 when you stick to walls isnt your movement control relative to where the camera used to be, instead of where it is? I love those games but I think mgs3 with subsistence camera is the sweet spot when it comes to having some unconventional stuff but not making my brain and hands get confused and triggering an alert because I meant to move left and instead moved right.
@night19522 жыл бұрын
@@dudestep i've always disagreed with that, MGS3 was perfectly balanced around its camera already.
@MrLeyr2 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about this sort of stuff too and I'm with you all the way. Playing Armored Core 3 and having to press the shoulder buttons to raise and lower the mech's aim is a bit of a surprise at first, but I've really grown to love it the more I play. It really suits that style of chunky, physical movement. Definitely do feel like there's a lot of space for experimentation in this area moving forward.
@Densoro2 жыл бұрын
This has been on my mind a lot lately too, and generally I think I'd appreciate a balance between responsiveness and novelty. Strange enough that I don't just snap into Halo or Kingdom Hearts autopilot, but not _so obtuse_ that I end up whining about 'my stupid character' or 'the goddamn camera' screwing me. Same reason I was never down with tank controls. Something _weird_ like Parasite Eve or Vagrant Story is more my speed. Instead of 'intentional skung to get in the way of playing the game,' just be like 'crisp, reliable, responsive controls that do some mind-boggling-ass shit.'

Absolute banger as usual. One of the main appeals of practically every video you put out is even if I have zero interest in a title you still grab me by the balls and make me feel engaged. I got hardcore into Yakuza and tons of other series just by listening to the intoxicating descriptions, about the soul of a title and emotions it invokes rather than the standard "here is how it be played" kind of look.
@LEXXPortPatrol2 жыл бұрын
I really love the look of Kwaidan, its so cool how much it commits to that experimental Dreamcast/PS2 vibe where conventional, standerdised controls weren't really a thing yet, so every game was its own unique experience in how it controlled and what it wanted to set out to do with those controls. Especially love the sort of combination of action/exploration and the point and click elements, it looks so interesting. Definitely on my radar now :) Can't wait to see the other vids you have planned too!

Thor you are, by far, my favorite KZbinr period. I have watched almost every video you’ve made and literally stop what I’m doing when I see a new one drop (or plan to watch it late at night on my ps4). You have an inspiring talent for writing, music, and editing that engrosses me and anyone else who watches with me an all the little in-jokes and especially that one “I’m compressed” joke rap you did (I’m a tiny little man in a tiny little cartridge baby) make me feel like I’m part of something special. I’ve been watching since 2018 and your stuff has stood by me through a lot of life changes so I wanted to encourage you to keep it up because I’m 100% sure someday soon the algorithm is gonna shoot you to the stars (and frankly I’m being a tad selfish because I don’t know what I’d do without your video drops). Keep it up man I will never stop watching. Thank you so much. You’re in your element when you talk cover topics you love and the games you want to talk about. If it means a 10 minute vid that’s fine, if it means a 3 hour vid that’s equally okay. Don’t ever feel pressure to cover or not cover a game or topic for the sake of us bc I think I can speak for most of your followers when I say that we’ll happily watch whatever you choose to put out.

Steambot Chronicles for the ps2, I remenber renting it a lot when I was a Kid, and i was so weird and funny, it mixes music, with mechas a lot if custom opcions for your mecha, and you not only need to be good at fighting, but you need to be good with instruments music and forming a marching band.
