Another great video. One correction I would point out. The CP Baron was named that at the time of the line consolidation. Prior to that time, the crossing of the NYC and GTW at that location was named Nichols and there was a manned interlocking tower there by that name. I believe the name came from the Nichols and Shepard tractor company located near that crossing (later becoming part of the Oliver Company in the 1920s.) The tower went with the installation of CTC in the consolidation project and the name changed to Baron. No idea where that name or GORD came from, but ROSE would surely be related to E.T. Rose (a superintendent on the GTW) or Cliff Rose (I believe his brother) who was a Trainmaster if I recall correctly. Only offering as clarifications. Your coverage and video is excellent. Spent lots of time in BC - great place!

I’m a local and glad to see you covered this “so called cereal city” lol. Used to be. I grew up about 4 blocks from the old grand truck station there used to be an old steam engine that sat I a fenced off next to the tracks. Playing around that hooked me on a life long love for trains. You would think train whistles are an annoyance but they were so frequent in that area it brings back so many good feelings. I would like to know more about the train yard that is just east of the Kellogg’s factory.. if you ever make it back to BC. Thank you for covering this. There is a ton of history here

I live in Bellevue, a dozen miles up the CN line towards Lansing, and see many of these CN trains and the Blue Water trains as well. I lived near BC in the late 70s and can attest to the fact that you could be stuck for a long time in downtown BC and it was virtually impossible to get out of town if both tracks had stopped trains or slow trains after a stop at the diamond.

Suggestions: There is a great view of the CN (GTW) train yard from the Emmett Street overpass! Although a fence is there, you can easily shoot between fence poles!!!! There is no fence (or sidewalk) on the south side, but you can get telephoto shots of trains easily!!!! Also, the old MC Depot is now Clara's on the River right north of the current Amtrak Station! You can see where the tracks used to be, but no trains there! It would make a great "Addition" for the story of Battle Creek!
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries8 жыл бұрын
I did try Emmett St, however with a video camera, it is much harder to get around the fence problem. Because I need a tripod, I can't really get the lens right up to the fence. The focus blurs out the bits of fence, but it leaves a mess on-screen, so I chose not to use it.

@jsax4heart7 жыл бұрын
I agree. Evening Before the Diesel and many other railroaders will tell you the tower that guarded the MC/GTW crossing was Nichols, and it marked the beginning of Nichols yard. Nichols and the small Verona yard were in Battle Creek just beyond the tower (which you can see in the map) before the GTW built a new yard further north.

I sure miss the CP Rail running from the Windsor Tunnel East & West. CSX traffic in nearly non-existent these days.
@spaceghost89954 жыл бұрын
The CP used to run trains on CSX through Lansing and Grand Rapids and Benton Harbor down into IN and IL. They now use former Wabash from Detroit down to Butler, IN and then use the NS mainline to Chicago.

@ThornappleRiverRailSeries8 жыл бұрын
Perhaps he was referencing the long-term plan to add at least two more round trips. That'd produce the 10 trains per day, But yeah, only 6 for the time being. They'll need to wrap up the Michigan Line Upgrades, receive the new Siemens chargers and bi-level passenger cars, and then work with NS and CN about scheduling more trains. Plus then they'll need funding, too. That expansion is still at least a few years off. In the meantime, adding a second round trip for the Pere Marquette 370/371 and Blue Water 364/365 is also being looked at.
