Way back in November of '86 a young private arrived at Camp Casey Korea and was about to replace a short timer who had to ensure this "turtle" was equipped for an upcoming field training exercise. As they were finishing up his list of gear the short timer asked about a knife. The turtle thought he wasn't allowed to have a knife because he was fresh out of AIT. The short timer told him " in the field your knife is your life" first chance you get go to the PX and buy a knife. The turtle saw a couple of other guys with Buck 110's and remembered his father carried a 110 too so he bought a 110. On day 1 he learned to appreciate having a knife carried that Buck daily for the rest of his tour. Fast forward 11 months later now he's the short timer and had to tell the turtle "when you're in the field your knife is your life" and that turtle went on to buy a 110 too.

I was at camp Casey in 99. Went on to camp Greaves. Good old TDC! Did you know they changed the name of Toung Do Chong to DungDoChong? It's DDC now.

My first experience with knives that helped me fall in love with them was when my grandfather gifted me his markII KaBar from his service in WWII. I loved it so much that I've carried it on every hunting trip, every deployment since. It may not have always been on my kit, but it was with me.

I went through a similar progression. My Barlow that I bought when I was 9 was a slip joint, I cut myself really good a couple times. My first decent knife was a Buck 110FG, it had the finger grooves. I bought it in 1987, I lost it the last time in 2001. That knife took me from working the casinos in Laughlin to A wildfire crew in 1988, to working as a cable tv tech and then a lineman. Next I got a Gerber Gator, which is about equal to the Paraframe. My Sister came over a couple years ago, asked me to sharpen her knife, which was a Paraframe. When she came back to have it re-sharpened I gave her a Vosteed Racoon button lock in 14C28N. She used it so much that I got her a Kizer button lock in S35VN. She treasures it like it is made of gold.

What a knife journey! Mine started with my military issued Gerber 06 auto. After getting out it got put to work, including gutting my dad's first bear. After a while, I started to realize how big and heavy it was and that i didn't care for the serrated blade. Almost a decade later I'm still falling down the rabbit hole lol.

I remember when I bought my gerber para frame like 20 years ago. I got it at walmart and I thought it was really cool. Right up until I tried to use the pocket clip. With 2 hands it still takes a second to clip. Pocket gets caught in the cutouts on the frame. I still have that knife. Dull as a butter knife, but its still here...lol

My first was also the Paraframe... Still have mine too lol! 2001 and a PFC at Camp Lejeune, saw it in the PX and decided I needed my own Pocket Knife lol. Have kept it to remind me where I am compared to where I was. As far as the knife, the blade play it developed is insane, and I can't get it to hold an edge for the life of me. I am pretty damn decent with freehand, can get all my premium steel knives to lazer sharp but not this damn thing lol. I have tried the Worksharps, both the precision angled version and the belt version, and 2 different types of stones, and it just won't get sharp anymore. I am assuming the heat treat was garbo.... but IDC... it's still the one I keep for the nostalgia.

So glad to see that you made it to 1k subscribers before the giveaway! My knife story is how I got into knives. My father has a Benchmade 760 that he has carried my entire childhood. Every Christmas, he would break out the knife and use it to cut the ribbons and tape on all our packages. I bugged him for years to let me use it before he finally agreed and let me use it, and the rest is history. We bonded over knives, talking about them, looking about them, and learning about them. This is why my first few pocket knives were Benchmades, and why to this day every time my father or I get a new knife , we show them off to one another and talk about them.

Love the story of your knife journey. We all started somewhere, and we are all in different places currently. As for me, I am a product of action movies as a kid. I was born and raised in the city, so not too many around me had knives. I started with the fantasy stuff buying junk swords and knives from gift stores, liqour stores, and anywhere else I could find them. I got into ninja and samurai stuff because those were the craze back in the 70s. Started training martial arts in high school and have been on and off for years. I went with my instructor and a couple of other students to a knife fighting siminar, and they said you should always carry a folder and they talked about Spyderco knives. I picked up a CRKT Cruiser because it looked "tactical" to me. That's where the folders started, and I soon found out they are more useful as a tool than a self-defense weapon. When Covid hit, I started down the knife KZbin rabbit hole. It began with Blade HQs videos, and that's where my eyes were opened to all the new products. 3 Apache cases and around $30K later, I am obsessed, but I love every aspect of these beautiful tool and functional works of art. Sorry so long, but you asked for a story 🤣

@TheUnprofessionalDad they are a great value. You can pick them up at Harbor Freight. A couple of suggestions: These can hold about 70 knives per case. They are pre-perferated, so you will be making the slots for each knife. 3 layers of foam, so leave the bottom layer un-slotted. I tend to make one or two rows 3×1 slots for big knives. 2x1 slots will handle most normal sized knives. On the first one, I cut the slots out, but I got a tip from a friend started pushing the perforated squares out, which actually worked better. I have the 4800 size, and they run about $60 each. Much cheaper than a Pelican Case equivalent. And better, in my opinion, than throwing them in a drawer.

Being newer to the collection game it took me a while figuring out the knife steel that’s available today. I thought surgical steel and 440 was like the best thing ever. I remember how I felt when I got my first folding knife. It was a Buck 110, I was just a kid, but I felt like I could do anything with that knife. That was the beginning of my love of knives. I can relate to every word you just said! Knives are very empowering! From the feeling of self defense, to true esc preparedness, you can tackle anything. Even Katelin started carrying a knife once I made her for a few days. She saw how much she used it and then had to have one in her purse at all times. I, too, had to learn how far the rabbit hole goes. I feel like Alice! Lol. The part you said about community and the people in it, wow! I couldn't have said it better if I prepared it out in advance. when i was a child here in Italy, i used to go on hikes with my grandfather, a WWII veteran. he was a nature guy, always picking stuff to bring back home, mushrooms, apples, nuts, apsaragus, you name it, he knew it and he knew where to get it in the wild. he always had his knife with him, everyday, all life long. i guess he was one of the OG EDC guys :-) anyways his favourite knife he owned was handmade in Maniago - Italy (he was from there) a fixblade hawkbill style knife with a fantastic walnut handle. so i grew up with him always carrying a knife when we were together. he later passed on...i finished school and started to carry a knife as well, and it is still a strange thing for most people here in europe to see someone carrying a knife. i think i am the only person in my whole community to edc a sub 2.5 inch knife... you it is illegal here in Italy to edc a knife, but i don't care. well, years go by and one day my dad gives me a knife, which i still carry from time to time, a farmer's knife from corsica. looking for the specs of it online, i noticed the knife community...got myself the first Spyderco, boom, hooked :-)

What!!! Italy!!! Wow, you are lucky!!! It's such a historic and beautiful place! I know some mushroom hunters, and they use hawkbill knives as well. They cut stems extremely well. How awesome that must have been, to walk the countryside with your grandfather. Those men of WW2, regardless of nation, they are all cut from the same cloth, were the greatest generation of men ever. I bet you learned so much from him! You know, its such a shame that you all have the laws and restrictions that you have. Carrying a knife for edc use is so natural for men and many women. I'm glad that you at least get to enjoy knives like you do. We have more "liberties" here, but we also deal with many problems and issues that you all don't have to. @@TheUnprofessionalDad i work in the crafts, all day long i handle wood and boxes and things that need to be cut and/or cut open. so i naturally always have a knife in my pocket...and most of the time i leave it there when i get off work. in most of europe but expecially in italy the rule is like that: if they catch you with a knife you have to explain why you have it with you, like if you say you are going in the woods or hiking in the mountains, you have to have the knife packed in your backpack and unpack it only when you use it. if you don't have an explanation, like you are in a bar with your knife in the pocket, well, then you get into troubles... stupid laws anyways. i have been in fights, never took out my knife from the pocket honestly. anyways, yes the WWII guys always rocked a lot, i mean, both my grandpas where in war 4 years long, both survived, came back, never complained about anything. they tried to do the best they could for the family and that was it. real survivors, real tough men. i am also prepping because i dont have a good feeling for the near future. i live in the dolomites, it is a very remote place up in the mountains in italy, and it's the place i'll defend when there will be the need for it. keep up the good work, i appreciate the content you are making!

Back in 87, I bought a Gerber LST I edc'd it for well over 20 years had some other knives, too, including a few Gerber Gators. I used and abused the LST. Eventually I got a Gerber Freeman folder, thought it was the end, ha ha ha. Thes lock up on the Gerber had no play, carrying it for a few years I discovered the lock was defeated with minimal pressure on the spine and had cut me, and the journey began. Thanks. Want to know how much of a difference the knife steel makes to me??? Zero!! Not one bit! I don't get to go out and hard use the knives like some do, so a high-end steel makes no difference to me. I like having them. I like talking about them. As for actually impacting my knives or usage, not at all! I do like collecting them, just because it's the in thing right jow, but I'm just fine with 8cr, aus 8, D2, and so on. Don't worry too much about rushing out and spending a fortune on knives just for steels.

Relatable story. I had a similar journey but I skipped the Damascus phase. It’s hard to find anyone that’s not on the internet to talk knives with. I tried striking up a few conversations with the knife sellers at the rattlesnake round up flea market a couple times. They know some steels are stainless steel. That’s about as far as we got. Haha everyone thinks I’m a nut for having so many knives.

Similar path - until around 18 months ago I had heard the names Benchmade and Spyderco but always had Buck, and thought they were all I needed. But then I started watching EDC videos on KZbin. And I thought Case slipjoints were awesome. I had absolutely no idea what I was missing until I watched some of those Knife Center videos where they present like 15 different knives, none of which I had ever heard of before, and they talked about blade steel and handle materials and phosphor bronze washers versus bearings, sharpening stones, batoning. And prices in the hundreds - holy smokes I had no clue. Now I’m kind of embarrassed about how many knives I’ve collected. I have a lot of really good ones, but I’ve learned to buy some of them used and fix them up, and I get lots of satisfaction from that. Lots of them aren’t even worth fixing but I love tinkering. My first really nice knife was a Spyderco Para 3. That’s when I discovered fidgeting. And then Civivi and Kizer with their ball bearing pivots. Talk about an obsession!

Just finished watching your video very relatable reminds me of the Time my mate asked if he could use my knife it was a flipper ( he opens it with two hands ) he cuts the rope and asked my how to unlock it ( it was a liner lock and he was pushing the civiv logo like a Botton ) I unlock it a put it in my pocket he then says “ you should get one of those pattern knives” I said do you mean Damascus he replied “ I think so…, anyways the pattern blade knives are the sharpest” Some people will never understand

I thought the blade was messed up and wouldn't deploy. I was so upset!! I can remember in the marines back in the 70s everyone had gas station knives and we would sharpen are shovels to do the dirty work, one day a new guy showed up with a 90 dollar Gerber 420 stainless, that knife was the greatest knife anyone ever seen, he was always showing it off and always had marines around him wanting to hold it and look at it, back then 90 dollars was 1 weeks pay, today that 420 stainless knife would be a bottom line budget knife but it was the greatest thing ever back then, it was the start of the knife movement for sure, everyone wanted a Gerber or a buck 110. but I did use a cheep gas station knife for 6 years in the marines and put the thing through hell and so did a lot of other marines 440c was the top of the line but no one cold afford it.we did have k bars like 1095 but no one liked to carry them to big and heavy and your shovel could do the same work.

If i was to build a new collection, then there are a b7nch of knives i would want, but 2 are most. Is budget an issue? Let's say that we are starting slow and building up to premium knives, for this scenario. If it was a knife that i would be using a lot, then i would start with a Spyderco Tenacious. If it was j7st collecting for the sake of it, then I would buy, no question, the Ruike P801. It's a knife that isvery affordable but gives the feel and look of something far more expensive. Obviously, there are countless knives i would want, but those 2 are excellent knives to start with.

Blade hq is awesome and has great prices. Brands like sencut, petrified fish and qsp have great knives that will not break the bank but are very well made. Kizer, tenable and kansept are amazing as well. Spyderco is going to cost you more but you can't go wrong with them. They have some of the best quality control around.

Sounds like there really was a joke you weren't in on. I went thru the same sort of progression. Gerber-Kershaw-OKC-Tenacious-Resilliance. My employer has an employee reward program, and when I got a bunch of points saved up, I cashed them in for Amazon gift cards. I ended up ordering a bugout and a bm 484 Nakamura in cf and s90v. I haven't looked back since.

Great video. I identify with the process you went through. I'm not in the club. Don't care, but I am thinking of buying a real Spyderco. I like either the open hole or a flipper. Not very coordinated for a thumb stud. And I like either a compression lock or the Manix 2 type lock. So I'm saving up for something that has those features. That ESEE looks fantastic to me.

Yeah we all went through the not knowing and thinking gerber was the bees knees. I had the same thing with steels. It was not until i got into watching you tube and hearing those numbers that i learned. Oh no.... most of my knives are 8cr13mov. Dang! I still love and carry them from time to time. It all about learning. Now im that guy that askes what kind of blade does it have. And i usually get a blank stare and they say STEEL like im an idiot. I just say cool and move on. I dont like it when car people jam a bunch of engine facts and specs, that i have no clue about or really care. I just want a car or truck to run. My first knife i was proud of the steel was a Case westline. S35vn. Now i dont like it lol. Not very snappy. Pocket clip screws are huge and bulging. And the anodized aluminum is slick as all get out. That was a great video man, i was grinning the whole time because i thaught the same things you did. All of it! 😅 well we both certainly know our stuff now. Im still learning, always learning as im sure you are. Its fun. Btw i hate when ppl get bent out of shape when you say ignorance. I really do love the Nomad! I think that Joker makes a really good bushcraft knife. They use a good durable steel in 14c, and they have excellent grinds. A mora, for instance, is good at wood processing, but not many other tasks. A Joker is good with wood. It's good with food.prep (good.slicer). It's good with so much. I love the Nomad! Excellent choice!

It is definitely good steel, but once powdered steel came along, it changed everything. Also, when you learn more, you realize that heat treat affects it more than what it's made from. I'm glad I wasn't the only one! Lol

Yes! It's not like a magnacut, or s90v or anything, but its still a good steel. It's very very durable and strong. The edge retention is OK, but it is so easy to strop it with a belt or leather strap and get it razor sharp again. It's actually a good steel for beginners because it is so easy to sharpen. You picked a great knife, and the steel will do just fine.

For instance, last time I purchased from Blade HQ I had to pay 50 bucks in international shipping and when the knife arrives theres 25% tax on the entire value including the shipping. I think dang near everyone started with Gerber/Kershaw/Kabar/CRKT. My son just turned 9 and let me tell you he got HOOKED UP. Spyderco knife roll almost full of Spyderco’s with hints of Kizer and Civivi!!! Of course that almost spoils him…he can go only go up from there!

You want a knife story well I have one. Keep in mind that this was the deep south of Georgia in the 60's during Vietnam. I have a Buck 120 knife. This knife actually killed someone and almost killed 2 orher people. The story is my uncle had just gotten back from Vietnam and had been in the Army for 8 years and the last 2 as a Pathfinder. He had been in the 'sh!t' so to speak. Anyways, he was in Georgia post discharge going deer hunting. In the Restaurant he was at he encountered 3 black men who were quite bigger than he was. They noticed his Army jacket and started harrasing him. They were really going after him and one of them slapped him and the other spit on him. They started bragging about dodging the draft, how stupid he was and they were gonna 'skin them up a white boy'. They had seen the knife, the Buck 120, and were going to use his own knife on him. The ringleader, who was the cook at the restaurant, picked up a hot pan of grease and started walking over while his 2 friends held his arms out. Well my uncle didn't survive 2 tours and wasn't going to go out by 3 racist black guys in a greasy spoon 13 miles from Gay, Georgia. So he fought and got his right arm free. One of the things he carried in his boot as a carry over habit from his time in Nam was a S&W 36 revolver. He got his gun out and shot the guy holding his arm in the leg. He let go and then my uncle pulled his knife. He had been training with some Korean ROK SF amd they had taught him tae kwon do and knife skills. The head guy sees his friend get shot and he throws the grease. Hits my unc,e's gu. Hand and he drops the gun. Still has the knife. He stabs the guy he shot in the leg, then again in the arm and opens him up. The other guy he broke free from comes in with the the ringleader who was holding a kitchen knife at that point. The one guy goes for the dropped gun but burns himself because the gun is still too hot. So he kicks out, my uncle blocks the kick, stabs right through the backside of the knee and pulls the knife towards him. Ringleader comes in and makes to slashing attacks that hit the military jacket and doesn't get through. So then he comes in on an overhead attack. That's when my uncle comes up and gets the knife up through the stomach and into the diaphragm and lungs. Levers the blade to the right, gets the heart and other lung. They back off, the leader knows he's been stabbed, doesn't know he is dead yet. He makes a clumsy swing and then drops dead. My uncle runs and puts his hand under water for the burn. Out comes a waitress who screams not to hurt her. He gets her calmed down, they call 911 and the sheriff's office shows up. An agent with GBI is called in. Waitress corroborates the events. My uncle spent 3 days in jail still. He is released but had to come to court to have the case adjudicated. He never hears back. Calls the sheriff and the sheriff tell's him not to worrh, they are working on it. They were waiting to see if the guy who got stabbed in the knee was going to die as his popliteal artery was sliced open. The other guy had his radial artery sliced open. Those 2 make it. He never hears about the case. Never gets a news story. Nothing. To this day he still has never gotten anything back. He had deforming burns on his hands a.omg witn some cuts from close in knife fighting. His martial arts skills amd time in Vietnam, often walking first usually meant a contact, even though they were supposed to avoid the enamy, that wasn't how they were used. They became forward observers and cartographers. But he had severak run ins. He was a character. I got the knife because he was going through some things and he wanted to get rid of his weapions to prevent suicide. I got the knife, plus the story I had heard told about 50 times. My dad got the guns. He lived for 25 years after I got tne knife. He also got imto another self defense shooting in 1990 at a gas station in Georgia. Someone tried getting into his camper on the back of his truck. When they realized some one was in there, they fired several rounds into the camper. He guessed where they were ar by the holes and fired back, hitting one guy in the shoulder, but with .357 FMJ. Messed that guys golf game up.

I truly don't know what to say! That story is a reminder that our men at arms were not always considered the heroes they are today. Now we revere them and celebrate them. We give up seats on a plane for them. We cheer and clap when they walk in. We honor them and their families for their bravery and sacrifice. That wasn't always the case, though. Our brave soldiers, who often times had no choice in the matter, were, as you said, spit on and called horrible names. They were mocked and scourned and forced to remove their uniforms of honor all to spare themselves the harassment and bigotry of the citizens they fought to protect. All of those brave men are owed something that our country can never repay! They weren't the ones who should have faced shame and ridicule. The cowardly citizens that hid behind their protection, all while hurling vile insults at them, those people are owed the true shame!!! Our nation has many beautiful moments in our past. We have done so much good in the world. We have also acquired many black eyes and dark marks of evil. What we did to those who fought in Vietnam is right up there at the top of the list!!! The war, and the politics removed, the soldiers deserved better!!! Thank you for sharing that story, and thank you to your uncle for his service!
