This might be my favourite song so far. Not because of the pelvic thrusting - even though, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining - but because of the way in which a social issue is addressed in such a clever and mocking way.

I must sound like a broken record at this point but I honestly adore your attention to detail and how you analyse the lyrics in such a thorough and thoughtful way. I think you're the first person I've ever come across who has noticed the correlation between the lyrical content of the song and the movements in the choreography. Their movements are definitely very bird-like and I imagine this is something that unfortunately gets lost in translation to many non-native Korean speakers. It adds so much more meaning to the performance when one is able to fully appreciate how the choreography brings to life the lyrical content of the song. This performance is actually pretty tame in comparison to their more recent performances of the song. Over the years they end up getting a lot more enthusiastic with some of the moves 😂It's unanimously agreed upon in the fandom that J-Hope owns Baepsae. So much so that there's actually an entire compilation on KZbin of J-Hope's hip thrusts during these performances. It's... very interesting 😂👀

@@eclipse4257 I whole-heartedly agree. You can really see how genuine she is with the way she takes the time to truly understand the content she consumes and provide thoughtful commentary. I'm often very dubious and cautious with reactors as there can be quite a few out there who aren't all that interested in the group and are only reacting for clout. Suga acts so modest when JHope does his hip thrusts right in our faces during their latest tours in 2019 when they perform Bapsae, but here he is really killing it! And yes, the meaning of the song goes so well together with the choreography, which is surely done on purpose!

I absolutely agree with you! I think live performances always make up for anything missed within the music video, you understand how they can manipulate their voices in such a peculiar and breathtaking way that makes you ask 'wait, is this them?' Live performances also help when it comes to adlibs, you kind of see which member really likes to adlib, etc. And let's not forget line distribution! BTS is unpredictable quite a lot, so in some songs like 'The Truth Untold', they add more adlibs in live performances or more members take part in adlibs than just one. It's wonderful aaaand I geeked out. Oops. You're welcome, you beautiful human being!

Baepsae became one of my all time favorites after learning from DKDKTV what the lyrics were about. (The performance was attractive😈 , of course). Your conversation about it was astute. I'm 72 and well aware how unfair the game is in the USA so can relate how it must be in Asia as well. I think UK is in the same league. Actually, most of the world. There are the "haves" who either inherited wealth or gained wealth in the boon that was the 60s and 70s and the "have nots" who struggle to obtain an education even when they can't afford the assistance from tutors and tools like access to computers and WiFi. Our youth, in general, are at an extreme disadvantage. College in 1967 without a a scholarship was beyond my circumstances, but now it is nigh unto impossible. Buy a house? In 1972 it was impossible in Switzerland. By 1977 housing prices in most of the USA was beyond the regular working class. Baepsae is timeless. 💜 BTS are using their music to open the minds of our struggling youth. Forget how it has been done in the past. Find your way to pay the expenses, do it different.

I really recommend the DKDKTV explanation of this song; doolset is great, but the video does a little better at explaining the nuances of the song. That being said, OOF. The choreography is literally them flipping the bird (eh? Get it?) at the older generations. The shock factor of the hip thrusts also works really well; it prompts people to go, "What is this song about?!" and look at the lyrics. I LIVE for the shoulder-swagger move. I don't know what about it is so incredibly addictive, but I could literally watch that all day. "I thought that was Suga with the 'You must be kidding me.'" This brings to mind how Jungkook sounds a lot like him when he raps - lots of double-takes in early songs. Even if we warn you about the reasonably expectable (J-Hope), nobody's going to say anything about whatever unexpected OH-MY-GOD moment there is (Suga) because EVERYONE was surprised. Jin's only lines in this song are "Baepsae ya" in the chorus - in many of their older songs he has limited lines. My personal feelings on the line-distribution topic: I totally agree that it isn't necessarily fair when some members get very few lines, but I feel that it's also important to take into consideration why that is. They've said themselves that lines are distributed by suitability to the members. They've never showed any genuine upset about it, and in more recent years the line distribution is definitely more even overall, something that I would say can be attributed in part to them branching out musically.

I love this song so much! Thank you for reacting to it. I also recommend reacting to Spine breaker! It's another song that talks about social issues, so I think you'll love it. I recommend watching the MV (it's hilarious) and a 5th muster live performance (iconic).

DKDKTV has a GREAT breakdown of this with cultural references. :) I also HIGHLY recommend watching the dance practice for this. They nail it, but are goofing off the whole time as well. Side note... this is the choreo of theirs I actually know all of. :P Also aslo... there is a live concert medley of Dope, Baepsae, Fire, and Run that is a MUST WATCH!

Me too - I LOOOVE the lyrics! The problem is that the previous generation had it easy during an economic boom, and now they expect the same level of success from the new generation. There is an explanation video to Baepsae made by a korean here on KZbin that's really really interesting and informative. I highly recommend it.

The idiom actually has a negative connotation. It is often used to put people down, especially those who tried to do more than their "place" warrants. For example if you come from a poor family, the idiom warns you not to even dream of becoming a CEO.

Someone in the comments said that the hip thrusts in the choreo could literally mean a "fuck you" to the storks. I don't know if it actually is but it makes so much sense for them to put such a strong move particularly in this song. I mean, it could be but then if that ever gets officially confirmed then I don't think I'll be able to survive that lol. That's the thing about BTS, they don't usually say something harsh or extremely strong even if it's needed but they just leave it to be implied which makes it even more hard-hitting than actually saying it. Another example of that which is also in this song is the way they pronounce Baepsae in the last line, their pronunciation sounds like "Baepsae-ya" which sounds very similar to 'ship saeya' or 'gae saeya' which mean "motherf*cker" or "son of a b*tch" in Korean so they might be cursing at the "storks" without actually saying it. BTW, if you wanna understand the full Korean context for the lyrics, you should check out DKDKTV's explanation for this song.

Huh, it's definitely interesting to speculate about the intended meaning behind lyrics and choreography. Another person in the comments pointed out that the lyrics literally translate to "the crotch is swollen", which could be another explanation for the hip thrusts. Either way, it certainly is very much "in your face" and attracts attention.

About the choreo... someone on twitter once said Namjoon said 'f*** the class system when he wrote the lyrics and Hobi heard it and then he actually f*** it on stage.😂
