Jonathan Weisman of the Washington Post summed it up when he wrote in 2004, "The fiscal shift in the Reagan years was staggering. In January 1981,Reagan declared the federal budget to be 'out of control,' the deficit had reached almost $74 billion, the federal debt $930 billion. Within two years, the deficit was $208 billion. The debt by 1988 totaled $2.6 trillion. In those eight years, the United States moved from being the world's largest international creditor to the largest debtor nation."

Among the reasons cited in the 1776 Declaration of Independence for separating America from Britain are: 'For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world: For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent.' The British had used tax and anti-smuggling laws to make it nearly impossible for American small businesses to compete against the huge multinational East India Company, and the Tea Act of 1773 was the final straw.

"Rendered the smuggling of tea an object that was frequently practiced, and the resolutions against using it had greatly diminished the importation of the colonies of this commodity."--George R T Hewes. The reason for buying the Dutch tea was anger at the British gov't and a lower cost (until the Tax Act). The colonists didn't want to pay taxes to the British gov't without representation in parliament. This was largely because the British military was actively confiscating colonists' property (without due process) after it had been improved by colonist sweat equity.
@georgerthewes
@georgerthewes 11 жыл бұрын
Americans at the time were buying the cheaper smuggled dutch tea, and the East India Company lobbyied parliment to impose a the tea act. The East India Company was in financial trouble, and had too much supply. The colonies was the solution, but the East India Company couldn't compete for the colonists money against the dutch tea smugglers. The East India Company also had 'middle men'.

The factors who were to be the consignees of the tea, were urged to renounce their agency, but they refused and took refuge in the fortress. A guard was placed on Griffin’s wharf, near where the tea ships were moored. It was agreed that a strict watch should be kept; that if any insult should be offered, the bell should be immediately rung; and some persons always ready to bear intelligence of what might happen, to the neighbouring towns, and to call in the assistance of the country people.

So, cut the government and the number of jobs, especially in Washington.

If he targeted the Tea Party and other conservative groups, how come he didn't go after liberal groups? The investigation on the IRS targeting found many Tea Party and conservative groups that testified that they were targeted, but not ONE liberal group was found. What the investigation did find is that more than 2/3 of the groups that were approved were conservative groups. Why so many more conservative groups? Because they don't run attack ads & other political expenses like liberal groups.

The loss of those millions of jobs started a chain reaction -- those folks who lost their jobs could no longer afford to pay their mortgages. Housing prices fell precipitously as mortgages went into default by the millions, and banks and insurance companies couldn't afford to cover the losses (and hence, went out of business). And, since many banks needed to sell stocks to stay in business and cover property value losses, stock prices fell. Personal Savings & IRAs dropped 50%. Thanks, Democrats!

The Boston Tea Party was a revolt against corporate power, and corporate tax cuts. The East India Company was the specific target of that response, not the British government. The East India Company had a 'monopoly', and the colonists wern't having any of it.

War between the small businessmen of America and the huge multinational East India Company actually began in Pennsylvania, according to Hewes. “At Philadelphia,” he writes, “those to whom the teas of the [East India] Company were intended to be consigned, were induced by persuasion, or constrained by menaces, to promise, on no terms, to accept the proffered consignment.

The price was dropped to try to minimize East India losses (tea spoiling in warehouses) and help the struggling company survive. The idea was to get colonists to tacitly accept parliament's right to tax them without giving them any representation in parliament. Again, read up on the Townshend Acts before jumping ahead to the Tax Act.

@sgtisaloser Where did I say that I "didn't know?" Other federal departments are given funds for administrative purposes (ie paying employees) where as things like stimulus funds are earmarked for specific projects in specific locations in the bill itself is it not? Thus, DOT is only the means by which the pre-specified earmarks are carried out correct? Therefore, it would not be DOT that Congressman would be asking, it would be the chair of committee would it not?

Nuclear warfare was not the modus operandi of the Soviet Union. Their military strategy relied on land power and politics. The US strategy was very different - air bombing, naval power and nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons of the US, UK and France were one of key points of NATO strategy, to 'contain' the spread of soviet communism in Europe. It was believable that if Russia invaded some country, NATO could not defeat with conventional warfare. hence nuclear power was a needed deterrent.
