Beautiful execution of this emotive ballad. It not only shows your talent but gives kudos to Tommy who would be very grateful. André in Sydney

there is a video where tommy talks about tears in heaven, and he says that the true merit from clapton is saying so much with so little... and this is not for everybody... to me, thats what he did in this song... this is so touching... my eyes are filled with watter everytime i listen to this song.

Thanks William! And yes, if you look at this song it isn't a complicated song (in terms of harmony or melody)... But the emotions are there, no doubt about it.

Tim, what makes the listening to your playing so rich and wonderful is seeing how much you love the song. That loves come through as clearly as the subtle beauty of Tommy's song.

@@TimVanRoy @Tim Van Roy You're welcome, sir. I am now listening to it again. You know, for all the incredible virtuosity Tommy Emmanuel possesses, it's this song I find myself coming back to again and again. The peace and sincerity in those sounds come from an incredibly beautiful source. I don't now why it moves me so much, but I know it clearly every time I hear it. Your gift of this song adds your own feel, different from every other version I've heard. Be well, my friend.

Such a nice playing.... Great sound..... Could you tour us around your system how you get that sound?? Thnx...
@TimVanRoy4 жыл бұрын
That might be done in the future through a video, but the setup itself is quite simple really: two Neumann 184 mics through an Apogee Quartet interface and then into Logic Pro X. I use very little EQ (just some cutting in the bass and lower mids) and some reverb from the stock plug-ins. Nothing too fancy 😎

Thanks for the nice comment (here and on the other videos)! I'm hoping to get back into making my own arrangements soon... At the moment I've gotten locked in my "Tommy Emmanuel"-modus, but other pop classics will certainly be done in the future. And Golden Brown might be a good contender for the list!

man, those are some hard stretchy chords/fingerings. I've been working on a few different stretch & finger independence exercises. You make it look & sound comfortable & easy. Do you have any special technique for this song? (intermediate player)
@TimVanRoy3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen! There are no special techniques used, but I do have to admit I'm blessed with large hands. However, most of the chords in this songs should be playable if you have a good fretting hand posture. Make sure to watch out for the position of your thumb: hold in the center of your hand (in between the middle finger and ring finger), and keep it on the lower part of the neck! Good luck!

As someone also getting into this game with a newborn, hell of a great job man! The performance is excellent, and both the audio and video are professional level quality....which I'm learning is much more difficult than it looks! If you ever shared your process for post-audio editing (EQ, compression, etc...), I'd love to see it, even if it's very simple. Also do you record with a metronome or no?
@TimVanRoy4 жыл бұрын
It's a steep learning curve, isn't it? I'm constantly changing things and trying stuff out, and often it seems to be a step in the wrong direction. My setup is really simple: two mics for the guitar and one for my voice (a Rode NTG just outside the picture frame), and everything in an Apogee Quartet audio interface. I record in Logic Pro X, and use very little plugins: minimal EQ (mostly low cuts), light compression to smooth out volume differences and a limiter on the main mix to bring everything up close to 0db with distorting. I typically only use reverb on the teaser videos, the tutorials itself are dry. I don't use a metronome or click track for the tutorial videos. I used to, as you can maybe hear in the videos of Luttrell and Fuel for example. But I find the sound of the videos I play without a click a little more natural... But it does mean that editing becomes nearly impossible and you pretty much have to play everything right in one take... And that can take a few attempts to get right ;-)
@ducoteaw4 жыл бұрын
@@TimVanRoy Man, thanks! I can definitely relate to your comment about steps in the wrong direction! I guess we learn a little each time though. Really appreciate the tips on EQ and limiting. Very easy to get lost in all the options of DAWs and plug-ins so it's refreshing to see the results you get with minimal editing. BTW I find the same thing when using a metronome - easier to punch in/out for retakes, but seems to make my playing much less fluid.

I believe it's very difficult to do a 1 take song for this kind of arrangement.. we somehow miss a note while playing.. does it happen with u?.
@nafitnessuk4 жыл бұрын
You would think so but with constant practice and sleep, it’s so engraved in your memory that you just play it as if it’s easy.
@TimVanRoy4 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, I do (regularly) miss notes or play stupid mistakes! If I would paste all my bloopers back to back with each other I would have a video of several hours long 🤣 Just know that a perfect performance isn't necessary, as long as the timing is right and it is played in a fluent, musical way. The key to getting this right (for me) is relaxing and knowing that nothing terrible will happen if you play a mistake!
