Guys, apologies for sounding harsh but you are not being logical in your requirements, and that could lead to another poor choice. You're saying you want a garage but also a big rear lounge. That's not a compromise thing, it's two completely incompatible requirements. And there's not much storage space in a van conversion that has a rear lounge, as you said Liam. I know you don't like MHs, but the things you say you want can only really be found in a MH. And Morgan was more like a MH in terms of space. A MH is not the cool choice in terms of looks, but it suits what you say you want much better than a van conversion.

Hi - Go to America and buy one there then sell it - will be far cheaper, bigger, and more for your money - and driving on the correct side of the road (easier)…. No transporting it over there cost and stress!!!!

Ordinarily I’d agree however the economic situation in the states is rather precarious so buying would be good but maybe not so much the selling especially if you are paying cash. Can be a little tricky and getting stuck in the states can become expensive in a hurry .

@nlryan1
@nlryan1 Сағат бұрын
@ that’s why renting might be the better option. Considering what it would cost to transport to and from, plus the van would have to pass inspection to meet with standards and if needed the changes would have to be made. We brought a car from Germany years ago and although relatively new still needed to have certain safety changes made. Also, on another note, many cities do not allow overnight parking for vans or campers because so many people have been living in. Their cars and vans. My suggestion is to determine what areas of the country you really want to see, buy a few plane tickets and rent a car to explore. Get a feel for the states so you have a more informed understanding of what you would be getting into. It’s a BIG country

Ken and Carol’s Consort van looks so comfortable. Someone said to me when I was thinking of buying a van, don’t get one made by a caravan manufacturer i.e Swift etc. It would be worth researching any van you are considering on van life FB pages, getting the opinions of people who may have the same/similar. You are in a cycle of being rushed each time you need a new van, which isn’t helping you to make the best choice. Maybe try to break it by renting something else whilst you decide what to do.

Keep looking. You want to be sure that you’ve seen everything and are making the right choice. I’m glad to see you prioritising comfy seating. It’s essential to have somewhere to relax when you’re living this way full time. In the same vein don’t get a bed that’s too short. You need to be able to stretch out and nobody sleeps with their head and feet touching each end of the bed comfortably. Put a pillow on the floor up against a wall lie on the pillow properly (your head won’t be touching the wall) and then stretch your legs out with your toes relaxed and pointing. Measure yourself like that, that’s how long you need the bed to be. I know you’re impatient to find the right van but try to take the stress off yourselves by realising that the time constraints that you’re imposing on yourself really aren’t that rigid. The Americas will still be there, spring is still a few months off. As for the deadline of having to take the other camper back you could always rent another van or other quirky accommodation for a few weeks, or even stay with family and video the van hunt whilst you’re still looking at what to buy. Making the right choice is more important than making a quick choice.

The 2 Yr old one that was under £50,000 was so much nicer than the basic new one,and 20,000miles isn't a lot. It also looked more spacious. If you had the new one and needed certain things added, you could end up spending more in the end. 🤔

I don't see an advantage to a brand new one... you lose resale value as soon as you drive a brand new one onto the road.. and these two buy and sell frequently! I liked the one you liked... for the same reasons..and 20, 000 miles merely means broken in and settled down.. plus saving the few 1000 pounds for any extras they want to add to it😊

Hi, it's nice to see a few options. The only advice I can give is to make sure you get your 'wants'. Don't compromise. Get the garage, get the oil heating and the right layout otherwise you will be doing this all again in a year! Please keep your sensible head on as well as your heart. It is for living in and you don't want to be annoyed by lack of storage, a short bed and no diesal heating as soon as you get it. There is something to be said for getting a better quality second hand than a cheaper new which doesn't tick all the important boxes eg: heating and garage storage, bed. Also don't forget your budget, it is easy to buy a new cheaper, but you have to factor in all the retro fits which will add on even more money. Good luck.👍

Hi guys we just watched your latest video and wanted to let you know from our experience. My wife and I spent over 12 months full time living in a CV20 and it was fab and iam 6' 2" too. I did some retro fit work with putting lithium set up in but I know some people just add another leisure battery in if funds are tight. We had a diesel heater fitted mounted under the van and vented out on the plinth by the driver and passenger seat. For a garage we had a lockable box that attached to the tow bar to keep chairs, tables ,ramps etc it worked great. Bedding was stored in the overhead locker and we had plenty of storage for clothes etc. I actually took the microwave out and turned that into another cupboard for plates cups etc as we did a lot of off grid. If we have any questions about it just let me know and will be happy to answer any questions. We love watching you guys, have done for years so just give us a shout if we can help.

Do nothing in haste. A few nights in a hotel will always be more cost effective than making a purchase that you regret. I think the U shaped lounge would serve you best… you can sit back against the back of the van and chill and the storage space below - in the form of a garage - would be invaluable for all sorts. Good luck… I think you’re very brave to film this and open yourselves up to all your viewers chipping in with their two pence worth. I love your eternal optimism… just make sure you don’t make a costly mistake for the sake of a few days/weeks.

You can’t live your lives on You Tube as full time van lifers and not expect people to “chip in” with valid questions Like 1) what did happen to the blue Westfalia 2) what happens to the order they place for the rig similar to the one they took to the Arctic circle 3) if the rig they took to the Arctic Circle was a loaner how did they get away with carrying out so many mods to it 4) if this is a precursor to shipping a camper to the US why are they look at campers at Spinneys which aren’t fit for purpose All smells a bit wiffy to me

It’ll probably have their roadside help thing that we don’t have in the UK, the radio will be compatible with their digital broadcasts, they don’t keep getting stopped by aggressive US cops, it’ll be easier to insure, spare parts will be easier to get, the petrol nozzles will fit (seriously - they have a different size for either diesel or petrol), the hookup (if needed) will be the right voltage, the tyres will be US standard. We have a CV20 and have had it for 3 years and have fitted Lithium, and the microwave works off-grid with the setup :) Plenty of folks have fitted diesel heaters also so don’t let that put you off too - would be easy enough to add a rear garage if that’s what you wanted… In all honesty, have had no problems of any concern with ours in 3 years. Keep an eye out on CV20s as you may get a new one for not much more than the 2nd hand one. However, If you can get brand new you of course benefit from warranty both vehicle and conversion! @@ThoseHappyDays a 4 WD truck camper would probably have been a better option for Canada and the US, than a dinky Ducato campervan.
@RedPowerStation
@RedPowerStation Күн бұрын
I had a factory built motorhome and upgraded the electrics, there is loads you can do. The Ducato usually has space under the passenger seat for another battery and I upgraded the lead acid battery to lithium. I fitted myself a 380W solar panel, upgraded the charge controller, fitted a battery monitor - all Victron and controlled via Bluetooth on a phone. You can usually access all the plumbing and electrics to add insulation, run wires etc. You can get tables built, storage etc after market. I think the important thing is to look at the insulation for the low temperatures. Air flow is super important but you can easily fit fans etc. The one thing for the USA to e aware of is an AC unit... very pricy for a van. However if the vehicle has AC you would be OK when it gets super hot. Probably also worth exploring upgrading the alternator for charging the battery and to use the vehicle engine as a generator as a last resort. As you may know, Walmart propane bottles will be the way to go in the USA.

Eh, I would rather spend the extra upfront than trying to retrofit. Sometimes it’s problematic, takes longer and can cost as much or more. I liked the black van the best. If it was taken care of properly, then the engine is already ‘broken in’ and with that low mileage and fairly new should still be under warranty. Or wait and find something similar with more of the options you want (or don’t want as the case may be).

Yes, at 19,000 miles it's just run in. But, seriously, I wouldn't take any RHD vehicle to America and, by the time you've sorted out the costs of shipping it there and back, you'd be bettor off renting one over there. Just so much less hassle.

All four seasons are amazing with lots of free camping !Forestry campgrounds are free and in great locations .The Kootenays in the interior is full of lakes and so many waterfalls it will amaze you plus less tourists than most places .The gulf Islands are something not to be missed as is Haida Gwaii further north.Lived here for fifty years after leaving England to do some travelling and staying!

Janine is right. Having a bit of a boot makes an awful lot of sense. When you live full time in the van there are comforts that make life easier, being able to take some luxury, like table and chairs to eat outside in the sun etc. We have had a motorhome for 20 years. The video hasn't finished yet but I'd highly recommend swivelling the seats round in a Motorhome and tell me you can't "lounge" in those seats.. Fixed bed at the back, garage under, along side the shower also at the back, kitchen in the middle and two bench seats in the front lounge with the front seats swivelling to make it a 6 seat table is THE winning layout IMO.. For full timing, you probably aught to look at something older and longer. I've done two years in that and it was damn near perfect size, it's only let down was longevity of the interior trim LOL Oh yea... stay away from Wetbelt engines Edit OOh Globebus is close... Swing that fix bed longways, shove the shower down the side of bed and that gives you decent garage and living space. Like that but older!! Mine was only £20k, **** paying £90k LOL Edit 2 haha Welcome to my home town at the end there ;) Don't buy new fella, you front all the depreciation. Much better bang for buck out there S/H

One thing you need to think about is you get what you pay for. The last one you looked at was I felt a bit cheap and nasty. New vans always have snags and if you are out of the country you can't go back to get them fixed. Second hand has had time to sort the snags out. Watch some vlogs about the CV20's there are lots out there. Not sure the insulation is that good but it can be changed. We have a self build on a citroen relay and would say over cab storage is great for the bedding. Good luck in your hunt. Consort vans are lovely but not cheap.

The insulation is probably the single most difficult thing to change, everything else is built on top of it so changing it means taking out every last piece of built-in furniture & much of it won't go back in right.

You'll not get the insulation you'll need from a British built van. You should look at proper 4 season German built vans. The Stuttgart show is on this coming weekend, might be worth a quick visit. British van build quality is pretty average. But they do have the oven and rear lounge you're wanting. I guess you learned a useful lesson on your recent trip that practicality is the most useful thing you need to be looking for

Love the insight into buying. The roof above your heads, could well be where to start, in that if you'll be off grid, and heading to America, solar panels, some good sized lithium batteries, and a pure sine wave inverter, could be needed to run air-conditioning, maybe also that illusive microwave too. The last used van you showed appears to me to be the better option. It has the awning, and the other extras. 20,000 miles on the clock means it is just been run in. Being a diesel, it should be capable of 500,000 miles at least. The new cheapo, by the time you install all the needed extras, it would certainly cost you far more than a van with the extras, but used. You would certainly be needing at least 200w solar panel, so would be swapping out the installed one, and possibly a new solar controller etc................decisions

Being in the US, you should buy here. Remember the steering wheel is on the opposite side in US, as well as the door to the cabin of home. You may find driving with the steering wheel on the opposite side, easier to drive while here. Before you make your final decision have a look at the Chausson 550X. It is only 6m long, and also the same width as a van conversion. It is very well insulated (sadly many van conversions are not) and although campervan size is more comfortable than a van conversion. If you are full time van living it will be far more comfortable than a van conversion but just as small and manouvreable. That is probably why it has won so many awards for design. We have owned campervans and motorhomes on and off for the last 30 years from van conversions - Trigano Tribute; Possl 2Win; Swift Mondial RL to coachbuilt - Rapido 709; Autotrail 696G, Autotrail Mohican; Swift Royale and A Class - Adria Vision (hopeless storage even though an A class) and our favourite Hymer 654 which was so well built, had superb insulation including a double floor and could be used down to -15C without affecting water and waste tanks as they were between the floors. We currently have a Swift Mondial RL which is now 14 years old and has only done 23,000 miles and we love that too but it is not really good for use in cold weather even though we have a solar panel and warm air heating. Good luck in your search but I think you will be impressed if you look at the Chausson 550X. We are pensioners but if I could afford one I would have one tomorrow.

I have seen two couples take a UK van to US/Canada. Both had to leave the keys with shipping company for loading/unloading. Tread the Globe had theirs broken into and ransacked. Overlanding Sophia built a partition between the cab and the living area to ensure their possessions were safe. Check their vlogs to see what they were up to against. Also don’t forget US is only 120 v electrics if you need to hook up on a campsite. I am definitely in the buy one out there team. Travel Beans managed to do it ok.

Hi both, if I understand correctly you are buying this with two very different missions in mind: an big American Adventure, where compactness would be an advantage, and a home, where space would be an advantage. I wonder if this is confusing the issue and clouding your judgement. If you buy the one you have set your hearts on I think you will soon find there is nowhere for your clothes and all the trappings you like to carry like jump starters and power banks. Have you considered buying a van in the US and selling it when you’re done with it? We love following you guys - thanks for your videos. And well done on Lapland - fabulous!🎅🏻✨

Im hoping you find the van of your dreams, but for me, that new one was too basic for the money. Id prefer a used nicer one that you actually fit in the bed. Why dont you do what Travel Beans did and fly out to the states and buy a used van for the trip. Or rent one. They are so much cheaper out there. With no worries about damage on the ship and all that damn paperwork. If you breakdown in the states in a european van, how are you going to get it mended in a remote backwater garage?

Hi, when you buy a new camper if or when it has issues you have to take it back to the dealer you brought it from, also it can take months for the parts to arrive to get any work done. Same goes for a 2nd hand one however hopefully any issues have already been ironed out and it's more likely to have the added extras you require and if not then it'll be cheaper so you can afford to add them. From experience budget vans look nice but for long term living they fall apart, that's how I know the previously stated comments. Get an old one don't worry to much about what it looks like as long as the engine is good. Ha ha. If the interior breaks it's not a big deal to fix just take a few tools with you just in case. Your less likely to be bothered about trying to DIY it then you would with a newer van and it's a long way back from America just to do repairs that only your dealer with take on.

We’ve been looking for a ‘new’ van too. We’ve tackled it from the point of view of 1. Length 2. Shower and toilet 3. Can we pack everything away we want/need to take. It’s easy to walk in to a van with rose tinted spectacles and not realise you can’t pack your bedding away, chocks, spare wheel etc. Make a ‘must take’ list, then decide what you can do without if you fall in love with a particular van.

We had a back lounge in our first van, Autocruise Rythm. It wasn’t particularly comfortable for relaxing. Also not enough storage space for us. We now have a Carthago Malibu, 6.4, panel van with a fixed back bed. Lengthways perfect for anyone over 6ft (it’s a German build, so made for taller people 😉). Loads of storage and better insulated than most British builds. We use the swivel seats for relaxing, and put our feet up on the bench opposite. The first van, a good second hand buy, taught us what we really wanted. Don’t rule out looking at any set up/model. There is so much choice out there and you are limiting your choices by only looking at back lounge set ups.

And then fly to Canada and check them out, rather than get one that drives on the opposite side of the road. Because now your steering wheel is not towards the middle. Oh, and you're gonna have issues, I believe?. It will be tons cheaper and when you're done, you can sell it there.
