I did the whole weekend at Thought Bubble this year and it was my first time too. I came as a comic fan, to meet John Wagner and to enter the 2000ad writer's competition. The writer's competition has too many applications and as such they were pulling numbers out of a hat and if your number got called, you got to pitch. My number didn't get called but it was great to watch the panel and competition nonetheless. I also had a story in WIP Comics anthology which I got to see for the first time at the group table at the event. I completely agree with feeling overwhelmed. Despite knowing a few people and having specific goals I didn't get to see every stall in details or speak to those I wanted to either. I also blew my budget on the first day, mostly on small-press and indie work. So on Sunday I was clear to everyone that I had spent my budget (and more) and was browsing. Despite that everyone was so engaging and I had a lot of positive conversations about people's work, how they created it and recommendations for reading etc. TLDR - it was great, everyone should go ;)

I blew my budget fairly quickly too! Hope you get in on the writing competition next time round; though it is great to hear that it had so many applications, it’s great to hear that there are so many passionate writers out there attending these events. John Wagner was an absolute gent fair play. I went back twice to chat to him, couldn’t get rid of me! We were seemingly the same in the fact we were overwhelmed but had some lovely interactions regardless.

I think me and you are very similar in our mentality, a lot of what you said at the end was 100% what I was thinking too! I had a great time, but was also very overwhelmed by the whole experience.

I think you are right! I think it will get better with exposure tbf, now I know what to expect I’ll be way better prepared next time….I think 🤞

@@OffMyShelves I had specific stuff I wanted to ask creators, but my mind just went blank when I met them. I really did limit what I took with me as well, so I didn't even go meet Zoe Thorogood (who I love) because I hadn't taken anything for her to sign!

Love this vid Chris, love your honesty! I’m the same as you, I rush past some stalls as I feel awful if I don’t buy stuff when the creators stood next to me. I was also stood behind a guy with 100 plus books for Jason Aaron, it was sad really as Jason looked sick of his life! Was great meeting you, hope we get to spend time together at a quieter place next time!

Thank you mate! Was so lovely to meet you briefly there mate and hopefully next time I won’t be away early, was just knackered tbf. I don’t know how the rest of you had the energy! Such a shame some people are oblivious or just don’t care about the fact there are other waiting and their time is really limited.

Man, you´re going places! Not just physically to Thought Bubble but showing advance reader comics on your channel.💪My goal is to visit Angoulême International Comics Festival in France. Maybe visiting one of the UK festivals would be a smart move too as I assume they are selling english language publications only(?). Haha! Your feelings of wanting to avoid creators while browsing their work is so relatable. Oh, the pressure! You´d do well as a Finn. Is the show you went to biggest in UK in terms of comics selection? I know many festivals have more cosplay, figures, toys etc and less comics. Thanks for the report. It was fun and funny.

Thank you my friend; glad to hear I’m advancing! As far as I noticed it was only English but I’m sure on closer inspection there would be some other languages stashed away somewhere. I’ve always thought I’d make a good Finn! I think it is easily one of the largest in terms of comic and art, as many of the really big ones don’t have any comics at all really. Maybe the Lakes festival is comparable and one or two others.

Hi Chris. Great to hear about your experience at the con. I’ve always wanted to get a few books signed for myself, although like you I get a bit weirded out with the whole celebrity thing. I’ll have to give it a try next year, or I’ll never know. Must admit a bit jealous of your Jeff Lemire black barn sketch! 😁👍🏼

I was jealous of the guy in front of me having a black barn on his book so I demanded the same off Mr Lemire! I think trying it out is always a good idea; if it’s not for you it’s nice to know rather than assume and you may well live it.

It's taken me at least 3 attempts to finish this video 😂 Always getting interrupted! Nice haul! Especially the pre-release stuff 😃 I bet that made the trip feel worth it despite getting a bit overwhelmed :') The whole situation you described with people bringing 50-odd comics to be signed just sounds ludicrous to me! Would've expected there to be a cap in place being enforced of like 3-5 items, maybe 10 at a push! Was also amused at what you said about feeling bad for browsing and walking away, although the creators are probably quite used to it so wouldn't take it too hard :') My previous "scene" was collecting board games (you'd think I'd pick something new that required less shelf space, but no...), and often at board game conventions, I've either had someone pitch/explain rules to a game for 5-10 minutes before I had to admit my budget was gone 😅 or even had a sit down to play a game demo for up to 45mins then thank them and walk away to think about it... I'm not sure you'd survive that 🤣

Third time lucky then! Glad you persisted. They should have a cut off amount I think but that’s on them to sort out; I know from Pete at Triple G comics that some of the creators do impose some rules. There were loads of board game and board game artists at thought bubble btw so both your scenes were dominant there!

@@OffMyShelves They should definitely have some sort of standard rules! I expect they'll get there eventually. Wouldn't be surprised if there's been a surge in attendance in recent years thanks to Marvel etc. Comics AND board games? Oh boy, I'd better start saving the pennies (and shelf space) for next year then 😂

Great picks up. Love the cheeky ask for where the body was lol TB is very overwhelming, theres just so much to check out. I am going next year because I feel like i ruined my experience last year and had the fomo for this year. The bogie man looks superb. Looked it up and only gosh comics are selling it. Luckily my missus is going to London this WE so im gonna ask she grab me a copy lol

Thank you! Hopefully we can coordinate next year to finally meet! I’ve read the bogie man and it was super funny; like a proper farcical comedy, entertaining, easy to read and very funny. Doesn’t put stay it’s welcome too! It’s even better if you have some familiarity with Bogarts films.
