People discuss a lot what part of Raz his archetype is supposed to be. the archetype power creates the version of him he feels he needs the most, and his archetype is a funny, silly, playful little guy. Also remember that despite temporary allies, Raz is mostly alone in his quest, and while doing so he needs to act as a helper and friend to the minds he visits. The Raz archetype was made to be Razputin's friend so he wouldn't be alone on his journey anymore.

I think a lot of people missed this because they’re probably younger, but Raz and his archetype are Invader Zim and GIR. Literally, they’re the same voice actors, but somewhat figuratively in how they think of themselves.

YES THIS THIS THIS!! I've always thought about how not only is Archetype like a friend or sort of a younger brother to Raz, he's also a support character. Cheers you occasionally, distracts enemies for you, and even can heal you What Raz needed was not only a little, goofy, silly littlebrother-esque friend, but also some support.

Another thing about Cassie is that the book segments are not written in English. But broken Latin. Which relays the lore of the game as a battle between 6 bees and a wasp. (I call it the apioform book) Now Cassie wrote Mindswarm out of necessity and the book was an extremely popular self help book. I like to interpret it as that Cassie thinks that Mindswarm was just intelligent sounding nonsense. And that people like Milla who thought it was helpful were just fooled by her. As if she wrote the book in a dead smart sounding language so nobody actually realizes how broken the contents are.

Problem is it wasn't. Cassie has a teaching archetype which doesn't fit in any of the scenarios in her life. Except against Maligula and the book itself. She teaches Raz and before, tried to help teach Lucrecia about her companions. She's also proud of the book as she happily signs it for Raz and used it to try and help Lucrecia. It's called Mindswarm and she was said to be able to control every cell in her brain. She genuinely tries to help people.

One Point of Raz asking for consent is, ho only started this after messing up Hollis Mind and being lectured by Sascha on the Power he holds. Its great seeing the Main Character actually grow himself in such a natural way. It's really rare nowadays to get such good character writing.

The fact that the sequel is just a week after the first game and few days after Rhombus of Ruin. To see Raz getting mature very fast is actually refreshing as many games never tackle maturity issue.

One thing in particular I liked about this world is that not just Cassie's archetypes are two-dimensional paper representation - *everyone* is. Even when they are ostensibly real people, as is most evident in the counter-feiter part, they have been turned into less complex versions, whether they're made into literal representations of a characteristic or not. I interpreted that, and I might well be wrong, as how we tend to simplify experiences, either by a little or a lot, to better comprehend them and make them fit into what we perceive has happened. Again, I might be entirely wrong but that was my thought.
@guy-sl3kr

That's a good point but it makes me wonder why that's not the case for anyone else's mind. Maybe Cassie in particular has gotten into the habit of compartmentalizing people as a coping mechanism because archetypes are her specialty.
@ShadowDurza
@ShadowDurza 9 ай бұрын
What sets Cassie's mind apart to me is just how the concept of Archetypes was presented. It's apparent that it didn't come innately like some psychics. It's evident that a long time ago, she deliberately chose to look inward and face an idea that scares and confuses most human beings: "Who am I, really?" and was able to turn it into a source of strength by answering: "I'd prefer it to be multiple choice." She essentially crafted a custom Psychic Ability through deliberate insight. But she's only human, strength can become a prison if you let it.

An interesting thing about Cassie's mind is that, according to some unused audio lines in the game's files, there was originally supposed to be another archetype Raz had to retrieve in an area based on Cassie's time with the rest of the Psychic 7 in Green Needle Gulch before Maligula, and this area would also be where her mental constructs of the Psychic 7 resided.

I would REALLY love to hear about the (highly spoiler) "practically dead" mind that Raz more or less helps bring back to life. Because I suffer from both anxiety and depression and am trying my best to recover, I really... empathized with the panic attacks and temptations towards regression that comes with trying to turn the lights back on, so to speak. Sometimes the hardest part is pushing back against a dreary but empty familiarity versus truly living. (A theme I also saw with Bob's Bottles)

I find Cassie’s level and story such a really telling story that a lot of people understand but may not fully get. Every person has someone different for different people, you act different for friends or for your family, these versions of us create who we are, But some of us, these versions of us develop into there own people, they may still refer to themselves as us, but they can be considered their own person to an extent, this is called DID (dissociative identity disorder, which can be commonly found with an ADHD diagnosis) I have DID, and Cassie’s story really speaks to me, though all of the parts are Cassie, they all have their own story and own personalities, and in the end they all do come together to “form Cassie” (which in terms of DID is called Integration, the process of working on yourself and all your alters, to become one again, not everyone who has DID wants to do this) But when you meet the “real Cassie” she still states what sounds like that this may be her outward appearance, the real Cassie is in her somewhere, which is probably referring to the fact maybe they didn’t all “become one” but now they are all working together to be who Cassie is, they didn’t do integration but are now actually working together, And as someone with DID, representation without the solution being integration, is really cool

one thing i also find interesting that nobody seems to have mentioned so far is that each of the "surviving" psychic 7 members' coping mechanisms are reminiscent of the 5 stages of grief... denial: this isn't real. none of this is real. this is wrong, so it's not real, because nothing is wrong. nobody is sad, nobody is hurt, everything is totally fine. it was just a dream. (ford) anger: fuck it all! i hate everything! nobody understands me! nobody will ever understand me! everything is a threat! i'll be safer if everything just goes away and leaves me alone. (bob) bargaining: what happened happened because something was wrong with me. i need to change and become better. i need to get rid of the parts of me that cause problems, and do something to make others happier and more comfortable. (cassie) depression: i don't have enough energy, stability, or motivation to provide anymore, or prove that i'm of worth. this must mean that i'm worthless. the world will function just fine without me, so i'll hide away somewhere safe for the rest of time. (compton) acceptance: what happened was real and serious, but there's more to life than it. i've come to terms with my role in the entire event, and i am ready to move on, turning my attention to different things in the world now. (otto)

One fun thing I always thought pertaining to the size of everything in Cassie's main hub area was that it in part had to do with her isolation. Once the librarian came into the picture, she didn't really have any personal interaction with anything, there being one exception; her bees. I don't know if it was meant to be taken this way, but I felt like the librarian talked to Raz like Cassie would talk to one of her worker bees, whereas all the other aspects were used to interacting with people. I just love how much you can get out of each look at a mental world.
@writingghost7795

I've always read Cassie and Ford to be plural, but unintentionally as representation. The idea of there being more than one in a mind, and especially with how Cassie would be a great example of a median system who has specific roles to work as parts of a whole, is a big thing. Ford reads as more of a traditional DID system, with memory barriers, steps to fusion which is often proposed in therapy (Which is iffy, but not being "whole" was obviously harming Ford), and headmates having various jobs. Both these characters read as really, really good plural representation, especially since what we often get is so negative and stigmatizing.
@rubyreeds8931
@rubyreeds8931 Жыл бұрын
I know this comment is old, but this is exactly it! Neither Ford or Cassie appeared to be aware of their respective systems either. Yet each one had a personality, job, and was attached to the trauma that caused the split. Cassie was the one that got my attention, as someone with DID. My system was similar to hers at first, but once I realized there were others, they became more than "me but ___" and instead developed more as themselves. Heck, you can even stretch the theory that Bob's moth is a persecutor, similarly to Cassie's Librarian. They harm the host by suppressing others and enabling toxic habits, but with the intention of keeping the host safe. They're important, and not evil by a long shot, just a bit... misguided since all they know is the trauma and not wanting to go back there. With a "by any means necessary" mentality. I know because I have a persecutor and she's a loud BS-detector.

As someone who has suffered with dissociative identity disorder and problems with even figuring out who and what we are, let alone coming to terms with it, Cassiopia's section in Psychonauts spoke to us on a level deeper than most people. We've had that archetype that wanted to just lock everyone away to maintain control and safety, we've had those moments where we had to make more of us just to survive, and most importantly: We had people that helped bring us out of that. Just like Raz did for Cassie. Our closest friends, the people that helped support us on our music endeavors, and especially our partner, all of them helped us be the cooperative mind we are today. We are not truly integrated or unified. Nor will we ever be. But we have made peace with what we are, and we know our boundaries, our purposes, our needs, our wants, and all of us work together to make a healthier mind. We are all useful in our own ways if we just listen and help each other. Just like Cassie's archetypes. There's a reason this section is our favorite out of the whole series.

@BigKlingy
@BigKlingy 2 жыл бұрын
I've been looking forward to this one, since Cassie's Collection is VERY Jungian and so obviously I loved it because I'm also into a "certain other series." 4:33 This entire quote is perfect. I've noticed a lot of people online act like Cassie has Dissociative Identity Disorder, and I think it's less a case of that and more her "Personas" going out of control. Teacher Cassie, Forger Cassie, Librarian Cassie, etc are all different "masks" she puts on at different stages of her life and in different situations. And this, to go on a Persona tangent, is exactly why you get a bonus to Social Link points where you equip a matching Persona for the person you're talking to. We ALL do this. We use a different "persona" when talking to our friends vs our family vs strangers vs our boss. Cassie's going out of control and losing track of who her "real self" is reminds me a lot of Rise. The word "Persona" literally means "mask", and I felt so dumb when I finally realised that. It's why cast lists in plays are called "dramatis persona." 6:19 Oh man the shadows in the room are scribbles I love this level so much. 20:39 Cassie sums up the concept of Personas better than anything in Persona does. (If she was in a Persona game she'd definitely be a Wild Card) You summed up most of it here, but Cassie's backstory is extremely interesting, and terrifying given how often that kind of thing happens in life. I've seen it speculated that Cassie's lack of Judges but presence of Enablers might be an indicator of her relying on the success of Mindswarm, and her other accomplishments, to give her the ego boost she needs to push her past trauma out. It's the opposite to Compton, Bob and Helmut's cycle of self-deprecation but equally harmful. I like how the Die-Brarian's subtitles are still attributed to "Cassie". This is... probably my favourite mind in the game, but it's a VERY tough call. As for what to cover next? Really, any would be amazing. Bob, Ford or Helmut are the 3 at the top of my mind, but I'll be happy with whatever you cover next.

After playing this level and learning about archetypes, it made me think about how and why I switch between interests in a relatively quick manner. My thoughts behind it was since I don't have much to do and have alot of free time on my hands, I tried to fill my time as well as my mind with these thoughts and interests, but I typically tend to focus on one or so at a time. Such as when we decorate our spaces & homes we are projecting our personalities, thoughts and interests on the world from our mind's eye. It's pretty incredible if you think about it. It's also gratifying to know since most of my personality & to an extent most of what I say stems from things I've heard in media, I've struggled here and there with wondering how much of me was really me. Translation of the Latin in all the books. Top version is the version from the in-game files, bottom version is a direct translation of the in-game Latin text. Practice of the bees ~ One day, a wasp said "If you please, I will eat this hive of honeybees!" The six bravest bees got buzzing to create a plan to defeat their cousin. The first bee read her a story, but this plan got very gory. The second bee sang a peaceful song, but his performance quickly went wrong. The third bee asked for help from the ants, who ran away and said "No thanks." The fourth bee put some vines to use, but he got his when the wasp broke loose. The fifth bee tried to freeze her stiff, but she could barely feel the diff. The sixth bee, at last, had saved the day, but lost his mind along the way. The first bee took defeat the worst. Everyone failed, but she failed first. She sought to build a better self, and left her kindness on the shelf. She left the hive to build her own, but in her new hive, she's all alone. She scares strangers away, and lives there to this very day. ------ Advice of bees ~ One day, a wasp decided to destroy the beehive. Six of the strongest bees came out to fight back. The first bee read a story. It was bad. The second bee sang a song of peace. She hated him the most. The third bee begged the ants for help. The ants said "I don't want to." The fourth bee tied the wasp with vines. She broke loose. The fifth bee tried to freeze the wasp. She didn't notice. The sixth bee was the one who saved the day, but doing so broke him. The first bee was the most disappointing one. She failed in so many ways. She needed to become stronger, so she left her kindness on the desk. The beehive didn't notice, so she left. I've said this before but I think it's still worth bringing up, I'll still defend the...choice, choices of mental health reperesentation in the first psychonauts. If only because, the way I've always seen it with the patients of a long abandoned shit hole asylum, the way that Ford talks about how his psi powers were black and white instead of in color, and how the general vibe of psychonauts seems to be the 50s and especially the 60s/70s with Psychonauts 2, I feel like the actual joke of Psychonauts is how gung ho and ethics/morality distant second mental health was as a field during that era. I mean people were getting into some WILD Shit with psychology like traumatizing toddlers into fearing rabbits, asylums basically just being a Prison Zero sponsored by coke with all the malpractice you could imagine. It's made pretty clear that Raz genuinely wants to help people but doesn't really understand how to go about it in a safe, practical or ethical way. And as someone that would probably traumatize Raz if he ever made the mistake of entering my brain, that's pretty damn funny.

I'm happy to see so many people pulling from Carl Jung. I agree that a lot of his work could be considered pseudoscience at this point, it really does make for a great writing vehicle. I use some of his work, though more his hermetic/occult side of his teaching, for one of my own comics and I know I'm not the only one since it gets compared to Persona a lot for many of the same reasons.

The fact that Ford Cruller.... SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS ....mind wiped Lucrecia is bad enough, but shattering how own mind afterwards? This caused so much harm, not only to him but to everyone around him. He couldn't be there when Compton, Bob and Cassie needed him and he neglected to tell anyone about Helmut's brain. I get that he didn't want to bear the pain of what he did, but it was such an irresponsible action!

As a median plural system, I felt very seen and represented by Cassie in a way I usually don't find in pop media. Usually, I can only find good representation of plurality in own-voices webfiction and fanfiction; and instead, pop media prefers harmful tropes like very nuanceless & ableist "evil alter ego" type stuff. Even if Cassie was intended as a look at jungian philosophy, I think the way she maps to plurality works just as well.

Jung actually does have a point and it is the key to being happy and a functioning person. It is necessary to create a version of our selves that deals with current situation. but we do have a tendency to overuse a particular "archetype" long after it outlives the danger or usefulness of the time at that time. not really sustainable to leverage ALL the responsibilities under one instance. more about using your combined strength of all those versions rather than divided

I just had a thought. In most every time raz goes into someone’s mind he places the door on the back of their head. Not the front. Notable exception being Hollis or coach oleander which he puts the portal on the front of their head or they put the portal on the front of their head. Showing that he’s going to their conscious mind by the portal on the front of the head. The parts they allow others to see. And the back being the subconcious and abstract allowing raz to see what they push down and the more stylized parts of their mind. I forget if this worked the same way with the other teachers such as milla or Sasha but if so it shows they allow them in a more controlled part of their mind.

Bob's bottles needs Hollis's hot streak to be talked about first because they both tackle addiction in very different ways but Hollis is the more generalized version of it while bob is much more in depth and is just generally considered one of the greatest levels in that game

I mean, I think a lot of people mention this because Tim Schafer and Double Fine made a very specific point to mention in interviews about the game that Raz always get consent first in this game except in cases of dire emergency which explains Truman and Hollis. @@ThoughtBubbleYT the point about seeking therapy isn’t directly related to the anecdote about asking for consent to enter someone’s mind, though. If they want to try and associate asking to enter a mind with a more serious take on being a Psychonaut, they could’ve at least provided any other character’s positive example of doing so. He doesn’t ask for consent to use Clairvoyance either, which is pretty intrusive.
@ThoughtBubbleYT
@ThoughtBubbleYT 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bloodshade I’m just going off of developer intent and how I interpret the game based off of the lessons Hollis teaches him at the beginning of the game. A huge aspect of this game is the ethics of trying to “Fix” someone and how it’s a Psychonauts role to help people to overcome their own internal struggles, exactly like a therapist. A really nice part of this game is that the devs provide the opportunity to read between the lines with these kinds of nuanced messages about the importance of therapy and the therapeutic process with out over explaining or being “preachy” which I love. And as someone who has a Master’s in Counseling, consent is a HUGELY vital piece of therapy so I’m glad it is addressed in this game.

Hearing the way Raz talks to each of the Cassie's feels a lot different when you know someone with D.I.D. (Disassociative Identity Disorder), I'm by no means an expert in the subject, I'm hardly qualified to speak at all, but hearing him ask for "the real Cassie" did make me cringe a bit. For context, D.I.D. is a disorder in which for some reason, usually trauma your brain splits off what is essentially a separate person, who will sometimes be in control of the body or "front". I'm aware this is not the original intention, but the Cassie's act a lot like separate fronts, they each obviously have different personalities otherwise this whole video would be pointless, and the way they fight back for control is reminiscent of a frontal battle, in which multiple personalities front at the same time. This is a massive tangent basically just to say, Cassie reminds me of my friend. Also of note, though not super important: The librarian is rather reminiscent of one of my friends fronts, which kinda spurred on this whole idea.
