I've had the great fortune to ride over 40 electric bikes and here are some thoughts on what i've learned.

I enjoy having a bike that will top at 30 mph plus , just for the needed acceleration to get across busy intersections. But for the most part I'm riding around at 20 mph and below ,averaging closer to 12 and 15 mph. I've learned to enjoy the slower rides in my old age. Love your channel Bryan.

I’m 36 years old, 5’7 bout 186lbs. Fairly good health. I too enjoy the slower 15-20mph rides. But would like a bike that can do 40mph+ when needed.

​​@@johnnylong2049 I believe the surron stock top speed is about 45mph if you don't mind the dirt bike look. Some stock moped style ebikes can do 35mph+ such as the spark bandit, lyric graffiti, revv1 etc. The other option is to upgrade the battery, controller, and/or motor of the bike you like.

Another great video you really hit it on the head especially about telling people who have only seen these 26 inch fat tire bikes in videos about just how big and tall these bikes are, they are very large and can be difficult and awkward to get on AND to get off of especially with a bag on the back rack! This is the video I should have watched B4 I bought my ebike. My biggest mistake was getting a bike with a high rise frame instead of the step thru. I forgot to take into consideration that I was gonna be using the bike mainly for cargo transport, delivery and commuting with a big city limits and I'm only 5'6". Lots of frequent stopping and getting on and off the bike, traffic, it became a big problem very quickly. Think before you buy.

I have learned to lean the bike over to the side. I know you said that you are delivering cargo, but I would learn to lean the bike as far to the side as you can before you start dumping your cargo, because you can really minimize the leg lifting a great deal.

This guy is on point! After years of experience at our Asheville Custom Ebike shop, i agree on 90% of everything said here. My favorite part is that look everyone has after their first ride. It's like a little kid smile. Priceless. I have the same story about not really caring all that much about which particular ebike I ride, and I have a choice of more than 100. It's all about the experience of being in the moment, cruising around, enjoying the sights and sounds. You forget about all your problems and responsibilities for a little while. It is a life enhancing purchase and my favorite big boy toy. Ride on Citizen Cycle!!

@@brianbassett4379 C'mom man. Lots of people want to enjoy ebiking but they don't have $3,500+ to spend. You can get a quality ebike for casual use for under $2K. This issue is magnified if you want to buy a pair of ebikes for you and a friend/spouse to ride together.

Myself, I have watched hundreds of hours of KZbin videos on ebikes, and this is the first video, which I’ve seen, with this amount of information that is wide ranging on the subject, of ebikes, and their sizes, weights, motor sizes, speeds, etc.! Coming from escooters, I feel like so much of this applies to them as well. Good idea to see an escooter in person before buying, since they can be surprisingly big/heavy, and just because it folds down, doesn't mean it's gonna be portable for you. Been thinking of buying a folding ebike, so this was very helpful for me.

If you’re mainly riding in the city there’s no way I’d recommend a 90 pound fat tire dual motor monster. I love my Cube, it’s a mid drive, way lighter, more efficient, good range. I regularly schlep it up the stairs to my third floor apartment. Pedal assist only, no throttle thank you! The fact that on a mid-drive bike the power train goes through the bike’s gear system is a plus for me. A lot more natural ride too, closer to a regular bike on steroids than these moped-like hub drive beasts.

Ebikes are between motorcycles and pedal bicycles. So the heaviness of the bike and fat tires lend themselves to a more comfortable ride. Much more comfortable than a pedal bike. Plus being much more stable at the higher speeds.

Also, many e bikes can have suspensions installed, which can make a huge difference in the ride.

Something I have found with the ebike I bought, 1.) Most ebikes don't have a great warranty, 2yr frame, 1yr motor/battery. Only a couple have a good warranty on everything. I went with a Pedego because they've got a 5 yr on everything. (Supposedly, we'll see) Another issue is with the rear battery pack being up high, and being a step through, you can't let go of the handlebars for a second while you're moving because it goes into the "death wobble" almost instantly. I.E. if you wanted to take a sip while rolling, it's best just to stop.

Either the 1000 watt philodo with dual motors or the cycrusher road bike since it comes with Similar features as the event in like turn signals but folds is lighter and also cheaper!

This was a great video to watch he nailed most everything you need to know, if only it was available when I first got my e-bike. I fell for a folding bike so I could put it in my RAV-4 and while I did that all last summer I finally bought an ebike Rack because it is so difficult to handle when folded up and heavy to load into the back hatch without sraping something. But because its a folding fat tire ebike weighing just in at 75 lbs. I am limited on what rack I can buy especially if I have another bike that needs to be loaded on the rack. I ended up buying Hollywood rack Sport rider SE because it can hold two 80 lb e-bikes. I would probably not buy another folding e-bike and would've instead just bought a great rack to carry whatever bikes I buy on.

Yes, mine is folding. If and when you have to fold it, buy yourself one or two velcro strips and tightly wrap the tires after folding. It helps to stabilize the bike when lifting and placing it in different positions. My strips are about 24 long and 1 wide.

If you want better hill climbing but don’t want to go the route of a dual hub motor bike, another benefit of smaller wheels is they permit more force from the motor to be applied to the road in direct proportion to their diameter (wheel and tire). A bike with 20x4 in wheels and tires will climb more easily than one with a 26x4 setup with the same motor, controller, etc. What you typically give up is top speed, if the motor is wound so its max rpm tops out with the larger wheel and tire.

Agree with everything. I notice that a front wheel motor is technically "safer" than rear, in terms of flipping over backward if accelerating uphill, as you've shown (BTW, it's the opposite for strong brakes of course. Strong front braking can make you flip forward-- has to do with the braking wheel leaving or not leaving the ground.) But I don't like the steering feel of a front motor. When accelerating, it pulls your steering toward center. Especially bad if hands-free.

I first heard about the 'Fabulous Ebikes' brand on this channel. I ended up buying their 20" fat-tire bike featuring a beautiful-looking BMX-style frame, huge 30AH, 48v battery & dual 500w motors. The model is called the EMX-Extreme and it's been a great bike for me at just over 6' tall and 235 pounds. The insights & advice from CitizenCycle on e-bikes has proved itself to me to be 100% correct. I'm looking forward to my riding resuming when it gets warmer. (Still snow on the ground where I live). Earlier today I brought the bike into the house from the ice-cold garage. I'll be installing some Tannus tire armour inserts when the bike gets warm enough to work on.

@@christianbeaupre7989 I bought a duel 500w model because I knew my local ebike regulations limit motors to 500w. Since the front motor can be switched on or off I knew I could always claim compliance with the spirit of the law by saying I do road driving with one motor & trails with two. I believe all Canadian provinces with ebike laws have that 500w, Class 2, 32km/hr restriction. When I first bought my e-bike I got caught up in trying to drive as fast as possible. Since then I've discovered more enjoyment in driving slower. The 500w motors are plenty powerful enough for enjoyable riding. I now get more thrills on extending range vs. speed. With my model's big 30AH battery I've had battery ranges from 184.4 km to 252.6 km (114.6 miles to 156.9 miles).

Great. I think the advantage with what you have is that it looks more discrete, there isnt a massive disc on the rear, and a giant triangle battery pack, so the police will think you are within the legal limit. Some ebikes look more like a moto cross bike, I bet they are sometimes confiscated by the law

I should check our ebike laws now. It used to be 1200 watts max(and 25mph max)here in Vermont when I got my first. The change laws every other week here lately so I'd not be surprised if that changed. It's gotten like California here pretty fast with all the laws changing and being added so fast.

Well done video. It encapsulates many of the things which prospective buyers must find out (and hopefully not the hard way). I would only suggest you give them a range for how many Amp-Hour battery should be the MINIMUM size. Perhaps as a ratio of motor wattage. I have a monster dual 1Kw bike, and the 22.4 AH battery is acceptable, but minimal. My 750 Watt step-through folder goes just as far (if not further) with a diminutive 15 AH battery. Both bikes use a 48 Volt battery. The bigger bike is certainly more of a hill bike, and has a higher top speed, but if all you want is a 28 MPH bike, the cheaper smaller bike does a great job. The bigger bike is used as a commute to work and the round-trip is about ten miles. I get about 3 days commute on a single charge. And that is with economizing (staying in PAS mode 3 (21 MPH) most the time and switching the front motor off for all but a couple spots). But, it is great for getting to work without being sweaty. The bigger bike will certainly get a second 22.4 AH battery installed. This will keep me from getting "low battery anxiety" on the third commute in a row. For those who are considering a commuter bike, think about how you are going to get your extra stuff (lunches, papers, books, locks, tools, etc.) to your destination. I used a large saddlebag hung over the rear rack. It can even be used as a modest grocery getter. You are quite right about the height of the 26 inch fat-wheel bikes. I am about 5 foot 10 inches. I must have the seat at the minimum height to stand flat-footed while seated on the saddle. The smaller folding step-through bike is for my wife. I had to find a bike with a seat height of under 31 inches for her. It proved to be a larger challenge than I expected.

I agree with everything you said, except for the best choice for hill climbing. Dual motors might be the best if power is your only concern, but for me, I want to combine hill climbing with range(long-distance rides in Colorado for example). The more range the better, so for me a European-style mid-drive e-bike with dual batteries earns top honors. I know I'm in a different group than the majority of your subscribers, but I still enjoy your videos and might try one of your style e-bikes someday to run errands around town. What I will likely never get is the moped-style, awkward pedaling e-bike - Ariel Rider Grizzly or similar.

@@travisadams4470 So far I have two. A Trek Allant+ 9.9S and a Cannondale Tesoro Neo X Speed. Both have the Bosch mid-drive speed motor and 625Ah battery, but neither have the range I'm ultimately looking for. They are also probably a little low on power(250 watts) if you want to tow a trailer and dog. It's hard to combine high power with long range. Those big wattage motors burn up the juice. A higher torque 500watt mid-drive with dual batteries would be a good compromise, but I don't know of any.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I shopped all the reviews I could find for a year and settled on a GForce T42 folder. After reprogramming it does 34 with a fresh battery but I cool it in public parks, etc and it looks tame! I can go to 36AH w/o changing the looks! 1000W 72V rear motor is not huge but with a 30A controller in a 65 pound bike? Maybe add a front motor too... It's fun plotting ways around laws isn't it? hehehe

I just received my new Biktrix Stunner X. It has a new Bafang DCP18 computer with 5 level PAS. I am getting motor assist at PAS LEVEL 0. I need to power down the computer to pedal with no assist. With your experience I wanted to ask if this is normal or have you seen this before? I thought level 0 is no assist? Thanks.

ive tried several but my go to is still the bafang mid drive kit i installed on a quality lightweight bike. keeping the weight down just makes it better, and i hate the half throttle. the thumb throttle just works better than trying to grip half the grip and twist the other half at the same time.

Since you've ridden 44 Ebikes... Have you ever had problems with chain coming off front sprocket? I have 5000 miles on my Himiway cruiser and chain comes off every once in awhile. Wish it would have a chain guide. Any recommendations?? Would be greatly appreciated

1:21 the #1 thing newbies do wrong is try to put a foot down while still on the saddle. Learn to come forward off the seat and step down over the top tube when you are stopping. That bike is not "too big" for her if she rides it properly.

4:04 "Replacing broken motor" I have a RadPower RadRover 5 that I bought in 2020, so about 3 years old. I've put about 15 miles on it, 6 days a week. The motor started making noises about 6 months ago, and then a month ago began to make a LOT of noise, until the next day it finally gave out (made a bunch of noise but didn't move the wheel at all). After jumping through many "hoops" with customer service, providing videos, they finally gave me a new rear wheel. I didn't have to replace the motor. They sent me an entire new rear wheel, including the inner tube and new tire which I didn't expect. Which is great, although in my case, I prefer using my own tire so I had to throw away the rear tire. And I use Tannus Armor inserts so their inner tube was too big, so I had to throw that out too. Total cost was $388. So far I've had to replace the battery and motor in 3 years. The battery only lasted 2 years. The battery took a LONG TIME to ship, about 6 or 7 weeks... And IIRC, cost over $600. So be prepared to make some big purchases in 2-3 years.

the Fabulous Mini X step bike was much smaller, lighter, and easier to handle than the Rad mini shown in this video. Fab mini was a really good bang for your buck and i could ride comfortably at 6ft tall. i have not had a chance to ride the shadow step though.

I'm 6"4" 245 lbs. and there's two hills i can climb on my gravel bike but, i want an ebike that'll climb 35 degree hills (at most one about 1,000 ft long) with assist . I'm looking at the premium AT Zebra from Himiway for 2 or 3 days a week with a 16 mile round trip ?

I like my Bafang midmotor on a old trek comfort aluminum frame bike. I get 24 miles on a battery/motor advertised at 50 miles. I don’t ride faster than I am willing to fall/crash at. People please use a bell, high viz & lights. I use a cheap detachable pannier on the right side. I wish I hard a step through.

For hills dual Motor is best like you said but I would also tell people a fat tire adventure type bike has the torque for hills. Like the Ride1Up Rift with 90nm of torque. Probably worth mentioning both since most people ask about "best" but may not mean the more expensive dual motor stuff.

What low density hell are you shooting this video in? All good advice. My 750 watt 52 volt Bafang conversions are so satisfying. I have one internal geared (Nexus) 8-speed that i've topped out at 36 with my foot power help, of course. The conversions are very stealthy--they look like regular bikes until I fly by you at 25 with me not even trying that hard. I love the mid drives but giving up my nice cranksets makes me a bit sad. I might try a back wheel drive version if I ever convert my Salsa Marrakesh.

If you're older, just get a step-through frame. It'll save you a lot of grief getting on and off the bike. Older people are not as flexible. My bike was advertised as having a 750 watt motor but I calculated from performance data that it was a 500 watt motor. Don't believe the ads. 500 watts was just fine though for me. The bike has a throttle but I never use it. I always use peddle-assist. The throttle is an unnecessary distraction. Remember, you need the exercise.

I’m 5,6 with a 32 inseam, I’m thinking of getting a bike for work which is 12km away, I was looking at the x premium lecture, and or the h6 step thru, what are you thoughts?

i have never tried either bike but both look very accessible for you size wise. the H6 will be much easier to drive since it is hub motor vs the lectric mid drive motor, make sure you understand the difference there. both should have great range with the dual batteries. i think this just comes down to mid vs hub drive and also price difference. good luck!

It sounds a bit more complicated to install for the average person like me, but I am guessing that there is a single throttle for this set up. I'd probably even put money on it.

I love my 26x4 Fat Tire Bike. I am 6'0 and the bike is big for me and boy is the bike beefy for me. I love it.

Citizencycle You just advocated getting a small tire bike, what if I already write a 29in mountain bike with no motor? Is it still okay to get a larger wheel one , or do these e-bikes handle that different? I already have two mountain bikes I enjoy I was thinking of taking one of them and putting one of those rear wheel motors on it At least this would only be like 500 or $600 And my bike already has suspension and disc brakes Any advice

if you can ride 29in wheels with no issue then you should be fine on the 26x4 fat tire. Building your own can be a cheaper way to test it out to see if you like it. only thing i would mention there is you said your bike is full suspension, before you buy anything think about where you are going to mount the battery, some times suspensions get in the way of mounting on downtube. and putting battery on a rear rack is not great for weight distribution.

About the fat tire bike sizing with rider height, I was surprised by this when I first got my RadRover 5. But I'm 6' so it wasn't an issue, just something I didn't expect. I was actually looking at a moped(?) bike as a backup bike, but I ran into the opposite problem lol. They are TINY! So perfect for that 5'3" rider. But not a 6' 310 lb. person like me who would look absolutely ridiculous.

yes the moped style bikes can feel a little cramped for larger folks, i dont do much pedaling when i ride them.

@@Wize817 Yes, mine is an e-bike with 24 inch tires that are 3 inches wide. So yes, they are fat, but not super fat as some of the 4 inch wides are. Electric Bike Company sells them, although SOME of their models have 26x3 tires.

My local bike shop turned down just looking at my groupset to tell me if it needs adjustment or not… A lot of bike shops think ebikes have cooties as if most the high end bikes are manufactured in third world countries anyways… good thing they’re simple and you can manage to learn or find an electronics repair guy/gal willing to take it on

How much does that bike weigh with a motor in each hub? And two 750 Watt 14S 52 Volt duel battery packs? Do you need to haul each pack with you in a backpack into the store in urban areas like San Francisco every time you run an errand? How much do those 52V 14S packs weigh? Or are you just thinking about being a suburban/rural guy? Or a guy in a major city that needs to tie an 8' long, 25lb, $150 titanium cable lock around everything he owns. Everywhere he rides.

Yes, service and repairs could be a problem for direct sales bikes. Thats why I purchased "mainstream" ebikes(Giant). Mainstream bikes don't have throttle options though. And throttles are fun as I have owned a few in the past.
