@@goodkingkarlos no, it's better to having had the right nutrition the night before and the same morning, and then start with the (non-caffeinated) gels after about an hour when the glycogen stores need to be re-filled.. caffeine gets your heart-rate up, so gels with that included might be helpful towards the end of the race.. also try them in training first to see how your body reacts to them. good luck with the event :)

This is one of the most realest experiences of doing a marathon. I have done 2 already and I am 16. For me the first 15/16 miles is really easy, I don't sweat or even being closed too tired. But by the 19/20ish mile everything starts to hurt. It's like you pretty much did the entire marathon, and what's supposed to be the easiest 5 miles because you trained farther than that is so hard. And when she said 'I would really like to walk but there are too much people watching at 5:29, I could relate to it so much. And as the miles keep going on it feels more and more like the finish line keeps moving and you are not making any progress, until you hit the last 1.2 mile, and then you finish that mile and you can see the finish line. This is where all the pain goes away and it's just like nothing happened. I am now addicted to that feeling of running across both the start and finish line and can't wait to do it each year. My dad and I have now made it a tradition to do this every year. I recently did a triathlon and it was pretty amazing too. Hope I can make that a tradition as well.

Do marathon runners realize they don’t have to run them..?

Meltem Bee I am in cross country, which is a running sport. Its long distance running and the longest race we have is a 5k (3.1 miles). In the beginning of XC season, I also didn’t understand why since we didn’t do any races just yet. After my first race, which was a 3 miles race (not 5k). I was running and I was so exhausted by the time I hit the 2 mile mark. But in my head, I thought “I trained too hard for my family / coaches to see me walking right now. I want to cross that finish line knowing that I didn’t walk and that I pushed through” Because running for a long period of time is really really REALLY hard. These people have trained for this and for them to keep running in a marathon, it’s just a huge achievement. Hope that makes sense.

Haha we know! For me, it’s about proving myself to myself! I used to be a chain-smoker and 70 lbs heavier than I am now. I found running and suddenly it became my reason for being healthier and better everyday, so I could run better and feel that accomplishment after. Everyone has their own reasons and things they do. Running is just one of mine!

8 weeks to go to my first ever marathon at Bournemouth aged 50. Only started running in January 2018 to lose weight - now beginning to get nervous. Have followed a 20 week plan fairly well but the long runs are a struggle to fit in. Found this inspiring.

@@runningchannel I completed my first ever marathon aged 50 yesterday in Bournemouth. Managed 5h 34, but was really struggling for last 10 miles. I have really enjoyed all the videos on here. No going to look up the one on recovery after a marathon

I couldn't do a marathon. I'm fit and I train a lot but marathon is likely never something I will want to do. 3 or 4 hours of constant exhaustion. Id just pass out, and die. Very well done though, you stayed pretty optimistic through the whole thing.

I started running during the pandemic at age 68. I had never been athletic or played sports, and could barely run 100m without getting puffed. A friend challenged me to train for a 5k a year ahead, which I achieved in under 28 minutes. The next year it was under 27 minutes. I started parkruns this year and new friends challenged me to a 10K. I've run two of those now. Then we challenged each other to a half-marathon. I did one two weeks ago (2:01:58)and have another this weekend. I just registered for my first marathon in April 2024 and Berlin 2024 in October. With consistent training I expect to complete these too. It's great to discover that you're capable of doing things you thought were impossible. My Garmin coach was the key to developing the necessary fitness, speed and endurance. Inspirational runners like Anna and Sarah help with the mental game. At points where i fell like giving up, I say "What Would Anna Do?"
