"Fear doesn't stop you dying, fear stops you living". That is one of the finest quotes I have ever heard in my long life. Just under a minute and a half and you have spoken more sense with real meaning in that short time than most do in ten times as long. Wise words, thank you for taking the time and trouble to post. Much respect from an old artist.

Fear is useful when faced with physical danger. Fear can even be useful in some kinds of social danger. But I agree: Fear about the future stops you from living.

Doctor, I am a 57 year old, divorced father of two wonderful boys (ok, young men). I am also an alcoholic that has been in recovery for a little over 33 years. I only say that because as I often do, I still sit around those tables with, a lot of times cross addicted “kids” and try to teach them your exact message. There is a little line in a piece of our literature that says “plan for tomorrow but only live for today”. It is not always easy but it is essential for a peaceful life. What brought me to your channel was @ 53 I had a stroke. I am 6’ 3” and weighed 290 pounds. I figured I could get to living or get to dying. I now weigh 210 and enjoy running. I had a PFO closure a year ago which caused some afib so now I have a little loop recorder and enjoy life to the fullest! I can tell that you are a kind man that just happens to be a doctor. You are a credit to your profession sir. Sincerely, Matt from Michigan

Yes, so have I. Seems ridiculous doesn’t it. I’m being sent for a brain scan, as a neurologist found something wrong with me. I do think the anxiety is linked to this problem, if it is that. Anxiety does stop you from living. It’s very very difficult to control. The medication I take does not touch it either, not much point taking it really.

Well put! I am a retired trial lawyer, for many years I had nerves of steel. As we get on in life, and living in this era, many of us are being affected by personal tragedy and it is intensifying. It takes time for us to adjust to our changed lives. I use a Bach Flower remedy called the Star of Bethlehem, it does have an effect on grief and anxiety! And my doggies and birds help too .❤ I agree with your sentiment, you are a heart specialist AND a true empath.

I’ve no doubt whatsoever that our conversations are picked up by our communication devices promoting targeted social media algorithms. Yesterday I had a conversation with my wife about my fears having now lived 10 years on from a multiple heart graft surgery and feelings of living on borrowed time. Even though I’ve been healthy ever since, continued working, travelling, enjoying being grandparents. But I suffer from anxiety. I went through a traumatic mental event 12 years ago which I believe contributed to my decline in heart health. Your words are incredibly timely and immensely reassuring. Thank you.

Agree wholeheartedly Sanjay. Following your video on the gastric link with AF I have realised that for me the stress creates my gut to tighten and as a result the AF kicks in. I have paraoxysmal AF. A cardiologist suggested on one occasion that i have some Gaviscon even though I was not experiencing any heartburn and never do. It worked, I burped and my Heart Rate kicked back into rhythym. The usual exercises on this occasion had not worked but the action of the ‘burp” in conjunction with monitoring my self for the last few years makes sense. I have AF a couple of times of year sometimes less. It no longer bothers me at the moment as I do all the correct to correct it and it starts with resting and “chilling”, looking at what I have eaten or the stress that may be causing it. Your videos have been so reassuring I cannot tell you how much as most Cardiologists do not have time to discuss anything with you. I was however very grateful the one who considered the vagus nerve spasm from my gut. Bless you

I have just started using a Nuerosym Vagus nerve modulator. The Vagus nerve is the basis of the parasympathetic nervous system,it runs through the heart lungs and other viscera, the research I have done is fascinating as the parasympathetic nervous system seems to be the parallel of the system of the fight or flight nervous system. When you start to think of mental and cardiac health in those terms things seem to fall into place. I am not a medical professional nor am I a sales representative for anyone, but it is a fascinating idea.

I get palpitations or feel palpitations and sometimes it feels as if my heart stops. It’s a terrifying feeling but I’ve had numerous tests over the last decade. My GP recently reassured me I’m fine but referring me for 24 hour holter for extra peace of mind. Now ironically since the GP visit 2 weeks ago I’ve had a terrible flu and was sick for over a week and not once did I feel any heart palpitations. Seems to me you can only have one obsession at a time!

Doctor, you really help me to get through my hardest times . There are times I was taken by ambulance because my heart rate shot up to 176 on bed resting , with sweats etc . They did all mandatory tests all came normal as usual. This been my case over a decade now . I too have nerve issues on neck so the anxiety symptoms are more physical. With my anxiety combined it gets really worse . I managed to take an ecg with my Apple Watch on recent higher heart rate episodes. My cardiologist suspects it could be SVT . I will be going for EPS. Hopefully I get an answer for my ongoing struggle. It’s hard for me to do day to day activities without having a fear of having another episode. I wouldn’t want this even to my worst enemy.

I agree fully with the sentiment of this, and I understand that with pots and ME the anxiety revolves around losing control of my pacing, usually through other people - eg. needing to be in an overstimulating environment (for work often), requirements to socialise for birthdays and Christmas, because not being able to pace well does result in increased illness, and when I’m in the slump of a flare up my anxiety increases too, thinking I’ll be in the slump forever, and the implications for work, money, and life in general. So in many ways the fear (and reaction of better pacing and boundaries) both keeps me alive and at times keeps me from living

Thank you, Dr, for true words spoken out loud. Just yesterday, after several weeks of 'fear of failure', I tackled a home improvement task that potentially could have ruined a large quartz countertop. I did all my research, of course, but still had doubts of my abilities. As it turned out, it was simple, went well, and was completed in a fraction of the time I expected. This is how my life has been, I can't overcome my anxiety. I have had anxiety for likely 79 of my 80 years (according to psychiatrist, probably related to childhood molestation). I will think of you quote for my next projects; actually for the rest of my life. Bless you and yours, and Happy New Year!

"Fear doesn't stop you dying, fear stops you living". I like that very much. There is more than death to fear. Fears are often irrational, groundless or of little importance or danger. The heavy feeling of dread or foreboding is more often or not due to making mountains out of molehills, as my father would have said. My mind will go to the worst case scenario, of course. Mind running ahead of itself before the facts are known, unable to let it rest. So my answer is to research the problem - I will drink some calm tea and then try to rationalise it. The feeling of Anxiety can be far worse than what you fear. Many fears are borne from tiredness or some 'distant memory' that presumably triggers it. Like the odd occasion I didn't do my maths homework and it's late Sunday night and I am trying to get it done haha. Ok I got them wrong - but nothing that bad happened You look very cold and I feel you should have your coat on. I can always find something to worry about.

Dear Dr. Gupta i’ve had an anxiety disorder since childhood, mainly around health. I’ve had panic attacks since adolescence. I’ve had therapy, take medicine and have remissions. Now at 74 they have started up again because they don’t age out. I’m not a doctor of course, but I don’t think mental illness can be stopped because you decide it should stop. I think acceptance of your illness brings about some peace. But nothing I do can make my mind stay in the present for long. I thank you for addressing anxiety, but it’s very complicated. Certainly, an overactive mind, "trying to protect you", but the danger is devised. Shifting attention from thoughts to the space in which thoughts come and go can be extremely relieving. And also work from the body, to move the fight-flight system into a different mode, with breathing and other exercises. I find the polyvagal theory very illuminating in this respect.

I'm currently in the process of deciding to have an ablation for very sporadic episodes of atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT). I've only had a dozen or so episodes in my life (I'm 55), but they are always scary and leave me fearful of exercising strenuously for a while after having an episode. (I had my first episode in years last month while really pushing myself during a cardiac stress test.) Right now, I'm searching for other treatment options because I know it's good to not rush right into things (and because I only have issues every 3-5 years, but I take things easier than I'd like), but also out of a fear from the procedure. "Fear doesn't stop you dying, fear stops you living," is a good thing to carry in my head while coming to my decision. Thank you!
