My name is sanjay gupta and I am a consultant in York. Today I wanted to do a little video on the subject of blood pressure.
If there is one thing that causes a tonne of anxiety, it is the mention of high blood pressure. A common scenario for example is that the patient goes to see his doctor for a routine visit or a completely unrelated complaint and the first thing the doctor or the practice nurse will do is measure the patients blood pressure. Then the doctor will shake his head, and say the words ‘your blood pressure is a bit high today’. You had better come back again and in a week and if it is again high we should consider giving you some tablets.
The poor patient is left feeling immediately worried and goes home to consult Dr Google and everywhere he looks there are these horror stories of how high blood pressure can cause strokes and heart attacks and kidney failure. When the poor terrified patient goes back for his repeat blood pressure measurement, he is already so anxious and unsurprisingly his blood pressure measures high which triggers of more anxiety and the prospect of a lifetime on medications.
This video is for that patient and my aim is to help that patient understand and demistyfy the concept of blood pressure by asking the doctor 3 important questions before contemplating medications.
As I see it, there are only 2 reasons, the blood pressure numbers are important:
1) The number is a symptom of something else in which case the aim should be to identify the underlying problem and treat it rather than make the numbers look prettier by giving tablets
2) The number by itself is causing the patient some form of harm in which case it does make sense to reduce the number.
It is also true to say that we are all different and therefore it doesn’t seem logical to use a single set of values to define everyone by saying that anyone with a blood pressure above 140/90 has high blood pressure. Surely what we want to know is whether the blood pressure is high for that individual. So instead of asking “is my blood pressure high?’, What we really want to know is ‘my blood pressure high for me?’
So here are 3 questions you want your doctor to answer for you before you start worrying about your blood pressure

I was a 40yo, went to my doctor for the first time in 15 years. My blood pressure was 180/120, he sent me for tests and I had type 2 diabetes. Two years later my blood pressure is usually around 125/80, i reversed my diabetes. All this with no meds just exercise and a change in diet.

That is great! Congrats on doing the work! Most doctors don't want to do the work to find the underlying problem. They just want to drug you which in return only gets you sicker.

fear is a doctors friend, it means you will do what he wants you to do, maybe the doctor really believes the bp being high is super dangerous or maybe he is trying to get more money out of you, who knows, another is how many people were fine until they suggested this test or that test for cancer and theyfind polyps and scare you into getting them removed (costing thousands) or getting cancer gettting chemo, when you were not sick and how many people did not get the tests died of other causes other than cancer many years later and never knew they had cancer.

Dino Carlucci - I was put on bp meds (and I told the doctor my bp is fine at home) She said, "Well, we don't want your bp going up when you're out and about." She wan't my regular doctor. She was in a clinic I started going to when I retired. So I got the med and started getting dizzy. I just quit taking them.

Marilyn King Went to one of those doc in a box places several years ago for a terribly sore throat..turned out nothing major, no strep or anything but my blood pressure was quite elevated b/c of the stress of the pain (could hardly swallow) and I definitely have white coat hypertension. Anyway, after the nurse took my bp he comes in and starts asking if my chest hurts. I said no, not until now! Anyway he put me on the pills and all my self checks were fine...until I went back for a follow up! You guessed it..high again! It did spur me into action though to lose weight and kick the pills but I have always felt the true cause of it was the stress of having it taken in the doc’s offic3 and the resulting conversation about it.

I so agree with you. The pattern here in the United States is to promote medicine. I watched another video, created by a teaching physician, prepared for future doctors to use in preparation for their exams, and that video categorized blood pressure medications and exposed the very real side effects that, long-term, are worse than the hypertension itself.

Agree. Doctors want you on BP medications, and the doom and gloom mentality is to common. I honestly think its why the BP standards were changed, so even people in the 120s would have to be put on something. To many people getting off meds, they got to get them back on Pharma drugs to make the companies money.

@@catherineelainebaxter4609 Unfortunately that has not been my experience as most doctor today in The US don't mention anyway of trying to get rid of the high b/p except to prescribe b/p meds. When i` have discussed the Helsinki b/p and other studies they would patronize me by saying "I'm aware of those studies" . They never talked about how to get rid of it naturally. They seemed to think that the only thing available is b/p medications. Never ever thought of trying to see what is causing the high b/p in my body. I have seen several physicians, men and women with the same results and I have had excellent medical insurance coverage, so they were paid well.

Spot on! Thank you! Luckily I don't let doctors scare me into taking meds. Found out Monday mine was 200/120, he said I need meds. I said no. Bought a BP meter from the Chemist, stopped drinking booze for 3 days, and it was 160/98. Went back to the doctor, and he confirmed the low reading with his own measuring device. So, I am going to stop drinking, and do intermittent fasting, because apparently I am now on the low end of Diabetes. I will turn that around also. Bad lifestyle got me there, so it makes sense that a good life style will reverse these readings. Thanks again for this video. Glad there are doctors like you out there. So helpful!

Thank you Dr! I wanted to verify your comments about the value of trying an automated 24-hour monitor and encourage that. I was getting very high readings at the doctor (NYC, USA) well over 150/90 I think I had a 170/110 more than once and I knew it was due to being stressed/ white coat syndrome. I am (and was at the time) a very fit, lean middle-aged guy, with a very good diet. So I wore a 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) from my doctor which took readings every hour. I somehow felt more relaxed having the machine do the work and obviously, at night when you are asleep, the truth surely comes out. BP result came back with a day average of 124/68 with a night low of 112/54. It's sketchy that a doctor could have easily put me on tablets based on several readings at a practice. Also the whole framing of high BP as a "silent killer" is kind of fear porn albeit with some truth.

This video just showed up and I was happy I watched it. After 2 very stressful years with no other lifestyle issues ( no etoh, no smoking, 87 lbs at the time) I wound up with PVC and HTN. I’m a healthcare worker and was mandated to get Covid vaccines or get fired, my 11 year relationship ended, and then my mother who was 79 got a new dx of cancer requiring a BTK amputation despite treatments. This left me with stress induced hypertension and despite years of meditation practice I have not been able to adequately get it down to what it was prior. So now I’m on medication. My goal is to get off of it. Thank you for this video. If I look at a BP monitor my BP goes up! I know I have to do better with more exercise and less work and stress. Have found this at a late date but presume that you are still up to date. I am a retired G.P. and have always attempted to look for causes of disease rather than just the signs of disease. Since retirement in the NHS I have focussed on psychotherapy/ mentoring and the physical effects of life style and cultural habits which lead to physical damage. It is a breath of fresh air to hear your analysis which I fully agree with. It is time that medicine is taught in a more holistic way including all of the nitty gritty of our physical machine as well the fundamentals of our external impacts. The individual is a part of a wider whole.

I used and probably still have high normal bp meaning my blood preasure is around 135/85 or 140/90, I sometimes check right after I wake up and its 117/78. So it seems my bp is highest in the evning. I dont worry about my blood preasure anymore, I just want to live normal life and see when my time comes to leave the planet as we all will in the future. I don’t know how I ran into your video, but it came @ the perfect time and I needed to hear this. I just happened to be going through this same exact dilemma about my BP all of a sudden becoming high. In the past week, I had been having a migraine for like 6 days in a row, taking Advil & excedrin, but it would come back. So I couldn’t take it anymore and decided to go to an urgent care facility and my BP was 160! They gave me 2 Tylenol and a shot of Motrin in the arm and said go see your Dr. So I go to see an emergency cardiologist. My pressure was now 150 and 155 in the other arm. I told the Dr that I don’t want to be put on meds, we came to an agreement about making lifestyle changes. He leaves and comes back with a heart monitor, prescribes me a medication…does not tell me it’s a “BP medication” and wants me to come back in 2 weeks for a stress test. I took the medication, my migraine went away, but then I decided to look up what this medication was, (Metoprolol Tartrate). I did not know that it was a BP medication; this is not what we had agreed on and it said that it had to be taken for the rest of my life and that is not what I wanted to do. So I stopped taking them after 3 doses. I hope I’m not doing myself harm by stopping without consulting with him. This is a new Dr and doesn’t know anything about my health. I’m just hoping that with this heart monitor and the stress test, that he can get to the bottom of my issue and not have to prescribe me any BP medication.

If they don't ask about your family history, allergies, anxieties, life style, and they prescribe you a BP pill, you need to change your doctor, because that's 101 doctor\patient conversation. Indian males are persona non grata in this country. watch the BBC and you will see over 82 Indian women, and the ITV are even worse to every 1 Indian presenter. Yet the Indian males (Hindu and Sikh) are the ones who amalgamate and integrate. But they are never shown. They want the women, the food, the Yoga, Culture but not the Indian male! Thats the reality. Thank you! Sure wish the doctors around here thought the way you do, doctor, about investigating it further, than just ripping off a sheet from Rx pad. Seems the drs, and some NPs, at the med school where my dr is, has the BP taken as soon as you walk into the room! LPN sets the machine to take it twice in a row within a couple minutes, then leaves the room. I have been over and over about this with them about letting me sit for awhile before taking it. They claim it doesn't matter. I have read that it does. Also, Not to have our legs crossed, but have feet flat on the floor, and have arm supported, and not hanging down. I have checked it at home, and when I did those steps, my readings were lower. When I did them at the dr office last few times, they were amazed that my BP was lower. I told them about the position to take the BP correctly, and they just scoffed, claimed they had nothing to do with it!! So, they are Not assuring their help staff is instructing patients how to sit properly, they leave the room, and then if someone's BP is higher, they push BP meds?!? I see some weird pattern, here. Kickbacks? They have denied kickbacks. I still suspect, otherwise, they would be interested in taking the BP correctly!! And yes, they want me to take those meds. I have refused them. They are so darn obsessed by the BP readings, but not interested in it being taken correctly. And not interested in anything else but meds for it. And they are at a medical school.🙄🤔🤨

The food keeps all of us alive and organic water to. Skip the faucet filter thing. Thats no good. Now it sure would be nice or super great if. All the doctors would be food doctors instead of pill poping doctors. We all would live longer and you all can make more money than ever. Then we all get our check ups with a clean bill of health. Now if we break a leg arm or need surgery of any kind. I dont know. But some kind of healing leaves from a forest to heal the body of. Whatever the surgery is. And the broken part would heal. Maybe a week or less. No pain whatsoever at anytime. Then all doctors would. Be blessd in a very special way. All doctors suppose to help save lives not kill people. Jesus does the healing. The doctors is given the brains to do the surgeries etc. With the knowledge they are gifted with. They are a servant to jesus this w a y. So my doctor was very speachless and she didnt say a word other than besure to get your. C.vaxx shot at walgreens and set appt. For your mammogram and see you in february. I said thank you. I took my mammogram got the letter and i was negative. No problems. Love you all. I do pray for you all.may god bless.

I have always tested "high normal", my wife and my doctor finally convinced me to go on a light dose. I immediately went listless and impotent. my wife decided I was right in not being on the pills and as soon as I quit them I got my mojo back and never looked back. my recent checkup declared I was in great shape, just needed a little more vitamin D. I will be 67 in Oct. I take Garden of Life vitamin and minerals for 55 and wiser men, plus fish oil, MCT oil, Turmeric-Curcumin, and glucosomine-condroitin for my joints. I weigh 165 and can still outrun everyone in my family. 4 years ago I was found to be type 2 diabetic and went on a healthier diet and started with the suppliments and lost 40 pounds over the next 2 years. at the end of the first month I was off the metformin and my blood sugar has remained normal. our bodies are constantly rebuilding themselves and it makes sense to give them the right building blocks. I got a wakeup call at 60 and took action and I am now healthier than I was at 50

Since I was 25 I was told I have a 'high' blood pressure, did not fancy myself taking life time anti-hypertensives, I ignored it and moved on with my life. 20 years on, no kidney issues, no vision issues (in fact still better than 20/20) and no other issues. Yes, this doctor is right, normal blood pressure seems to be different for everyone, you have to find it for you.

I was similarly told at 20 I had hypertension. (What were your numbers?) I didn't want to be on meds either! Kidneys were checked as I was slim and young they thought I had kidney damage. Everything was fine. I always felt fine. My numbers were very high though... like 200s over 120s. I took the meds till they run out and then was always slack being young and didn't keep a check on it. Every pregnancy they of course put me on meds. Now in my 40s I stay on meds as I know the risk. ☹️

The thing that makes the blood pressure go up is the mention of doctors at least in my book. But I like how this guy thinks that one blood pressure number is not the same for everybody. It's the same with weight loss and diet. Changing the num6dont change what's wrong, which is why I like naturopaths who treat whole body not just symptoms.

I don't find that all doctors want to give meds but I have to look for doctors open to blended medicine. Warn them upfront that you are looking for options in your solutions, referrals to others such as nutritionists. Be willing to explore those options. Most people would rather take a pill than make a lifestyle change and doctors get frustrated in this area also. Challenge them to be better doctors and I've found I get better results.
