Good video! I must be one 9f the few who loves "I Don't Know ". To me absolutely gorgeous from the production to the way Paul sings it. Maybe it's because my Mom had passed 6 months before the release of the album and I was still quite raw. I do like this album and I believe some of the tracks do grow on you. I also think it's quite personal in in that he seems to be sharing his feelings as in I Don't Know, Happy With You and Cofidante. All in all, I enjoy it and his voice sounds good here. Of course it's easier to manipulate the studio than a live performance, but I'll take him however I can get him!

"New" really struck a chord with me (pun intended), so I don't think Egypt Station is as strong an album. It falters in the second half, in my opinion. I really like the two bonus tracks. What is immensely cool is that the album hit #1 on Billboard, which is noteworthy if you put stock in that sort of thing. A pretty good album all around. Thanks, John.

I consider this album Egypt Station a Paul McCartney masterpiece that can stand up to a Beatles Album for excitement and quality, there are brilliant little flourishes and touches throughout that when added together form a celebration of talent beyond description, I don't try to compare albums by former Beatles based on a merits system, I either like them or I don't, this one I do, it has humour and depth, truly one of his real masterpieces.

I tend to agree that it's a tad overlong, and I think "People Want Peace" is the weakest track. But I have grown to love this album more and more with each listen. I love how McCartney places "I Don't Know" as the lead track. A bit of a surprise because I thought he would start it with a big rocker, but it works so well where it is. Love your insights, John!

Hi John. Great overview. I like a good portion of this album except for a couple that i can't seem to get around to liking. I have not purchased it yet. Maybe one I get sometime later as there is way too many great reissues on the way or have begun to appear. Yes, Fuh You is... one that even as a bonus would not be welcome. Out of all the singles I really like I Don't Know. Have a great Fall. Definitely the strong ones for me are Despite Repeated Warnings, Dominoes and the medley at the end. I totally agree that the beginning and the initial single is important in how you embark on the album's discovery journey. Hope you enjoy will be getting some of the reissues like the Lennon Imagine or the White Album. I will certainly be watching if you do an unboxing or review of those great recordings. God bless Tino

"I Don't Know" is a good track. I'm a sucker for that kind of "I'll take the strain for you" thing that is the chorus or whatever, and I like how he's saying he doesn't know what he's doing wrong that's causing him problems. Something everyone can relate to. And it's a very nice composition, all of its components are quite different but it flows very well. As for the album, I'm happy that he went with the album as a complete unit rather than just a collection of singles thing that seems to have disappeared. But it's real unfortunate that his voice is going. He had one of the best, most versatile voices. But it is what it is, and his voice is still good enough to sing what he's trying to convey

Hi John, is it a Royalty issues that you cannot use or sample some of the music? Just curious👍

Nice mention of the cover and packaging Mr Heaton. Well done! I agree, it's his best since "Tug of War" and does look alot like "Gone Troppo" but much better. I just wonder why he chose this painting as the title and cover. Just curious. Still, I think this is his best album song-wise since Chaos.... or, Electric Arguments. I do agree I think it has something to do with the solid consistency of the production sound and the flow from song to song. Some really great highlights to hear, here. As you rightly mentioned the album is very long to get thru and needs a bit of editing. Never thought of taking the 3 tracks you mentioned. My first thought was to drop one of the longer tracks. I have to admit, I like "People want Peace". Yes, Paul has taken on this theme quite a few times and maybe with better results but I like it. It reminds a bit of a mix between "C mon People" and "Hope for the future". Instead of taking this off I would take off "Back to Brazil" which is my least favorite track. Hmmm????, taking off "Come on to me" and "Fuh You" would make for an interesting listen. I like that idea. It certainly would make the album less pop sounding, and, less silly(for lack of a better word). Both songs have that modern, pop sound but don't say much. So, start the album off with "Opening Station" then "I don't know", "Happy with you", and "Who Cares". Another thing, I have a problem with "Despite Repeated Warnings" and the "Hunt you down" medley both being at the back end of the album. To me, because they are both really long tracks it makes the album hard to get thru at the end. I like the idea of moving "Despite..." right after "Confidante", followed by "People want peace", "Hand in Hand", "Dominoes", then Cesear Rock", and "Hunt you down". Then, I prefer to end the album instead with "Do it Now". It's not the best track but one that has a nice, simple message with a sort of prayerful feel to it's melody that I think would make a good finish to the album. Then follow that with "Station II" to bring the album full circle. I actually just did a mix of this without those 3 tracks and moved those certain tracks around and it actually flows really well. Brings back the days of making cassette tape playlists. Anyway, another nice review. I've been wanting to pick up that Apple compilation but have never gotten around to it. Any chance of a Lennon "Imagine" boxed set review or thoughts on the soon to be White album box set release??? Keep 'em coming and I'll keep watching.

I guess I'll be eating macaroni and cheese all winter but listening to some great stuff. lol. I listened again to a copy of my own edited mix of "Egypt Station" with your suggestions while driving all day, ......What a difference. By taking off "Come on to Me", "Fuh you" and "Back to Brazil", moving "Despite....." up in the track listing between "Confidante" and "People want Peace" and then ending the album with "Do it Now" really made me appreciate the longer songs and the album just flew by and I really enjoyed even more than I already did. Didn't even miss the other 3 tracks. Sorry Paul, but just too much to get thru.

Hi John, good stuff from you as usual. Personally, I think this is his most consistent and high quality work overall in terms of writing, concept and production since Flaming Pie. and before Flaming Pie, since Tug of war (though I personally dont like that one). For me, "I don't know" is possibly in his top 5 post Beatle tracks. But its not individual songs so much, as it is with the overall flow. Also, in my opinion, I would remove the last medly to shorten it, and end with "Despite repeated warnings". (even though I dont agree with the message, its undeniably a great song).

I'm pretty much on the same page John and overall it's a very strong album. I feel like you that a cull of 2 or 3 songs would've made the album even stronger, though the cull wouldn't include Come On To Me which I do like and dumping it the record would've lost a more upbeat song which it could ill afford to do. I probably would have popped bonus track Get Started into the middle of the album in place of Fuh You and dropped Peace and Confidante which hasn't grown on me at all, bit dull. :) I think Do It Now is a beauty but that one does divide people as does Hand In Hand which is another gem for me. Despite Repeated Warnings is another that took a little while to grab me but now it's a big highlight and I love the lyrics as well as the songs multiple structures. Also, Dominoes is another memorable track that I liked pretty quickly but now I really love, one of the best vocals on the album too. I feel despite the sag in the middle of the album it's Paul's most enjoyable album overall since Tug Of War and best produced record since then.

I love Egypt Station! I think it is a contender to be Paul's best album. It is great music with a message. I think John would have loved it. The best track on the album, in my opinion is "Who Cares." I like "Come On To Me" and "Fuh You." I think people are stuck on Paul's age with these songs. If you listen to the songs just on their merit they are quite good. I do think Paul would have been better off naming "Fuh You" I Just Want To Know.

Hi. I agree with you that the album should have been a 40 minutes album. I think it would be one of his best if he had left some songs of it. Ofcourse the songs that have to be on that 40 minutes album is worth a discussion, but in the end it depends on someone's personal taste.

Agree with much of your review here John..Particularly the three songs you would've chosen to remove,which would have been my choices also...I also would've swapped Caeser Rock for Frank Sinatra's Party even though it's an old tune reworked..Just think it would've worked a whole lot better imo..Plus it's kind of a daft groovy little earworm,that I think the record as a whole kind of lacks personally..Overall Egypt Station is an album of both great brilliance,and naive clumsiness I would say..Paul often manages to achieve both of these attributes all in the same song in fact..Particularly in terms of lyrics..I realise he doesn't like to self analyse or over think stuff too much...Which at times he should perhaps be commended for.?.But there are other times when as a listener I'm sat here thinking "if you'd only gave this thing a little more thought as to what it is you're trying to express..you were literally a hair's breadth away from writing a masterpiece.." The opening track is a perfect example of this imo....All these years on and the dude is still some kind of genius enigma..All in all,I suppose you have to love him for it.

Nice review. Best album he's done in awhile, I don't know what other people are (not) hearing! They need to clean out their ears... I think people have a tendency to assume a new release from Paul can't be favorably compared to some of his more classic material, and that is not necessarily true. NEW had strong singles but as an album it just doesn't hang together.
@TomCwimpRock6 жыл бұрын
I agree with pretty much everything said here. I think that it is a considerable improvement over “New”. It is a bit too long, I agree - I would take off the dreadful “Fuh You”, “People Want Peace”, and probably “Do It Now”, which would be OK as a b-side, or a bonus track, but is a bit too platitude-ish, and it sort of drags the album down..”Despite Repeated Warnings”, has grown on me, but still seems a bit too forced - it’s OK, I guess.. For me, “Egypt Station” may be my favorite McCartney release since “Chaos” and “Electric Arguments”, overall though, I would rank it somewhere in the middle of the pack of Paul albums probably, but still too early to say ... Nice video John.
@TomCwimpRock6 жыл бұрын
...and as far as Paul’s voice goes - I think that he is sounding quite soulful on these songs, particularly on “Happy With You” despite the obvious wear and tear.. I think that his aged voice has character, although it can be an issue in live performances..

I don't think it's better than NEW. For me, taking off "Come On To Me" and "Fuh You" would rob the album of its modern feel, and take away some much-needed upbeat excitement, something which this album mostly otherwise lacks. I can't stand the ham-fisted "Despite Repeated Warnings", yet I realize it's much too popular politically to be removed. Then ace the few dull songs like "People Want Peace", "Hand In Hand", or "Do It Now". I also feel the two bonus tracks would have made the album more fun. [Just as an aside, I think "Your Loving Flame" is the epitome of 'Moon/June/Spoon' writing].

I normally would agree with you and I was thinking it would be poor and Freedom like, but I think the opposite and think he got it right musically and lyrically. As it's a metaphorical lyric I think that works perfectly and you can take it any way you want too. I did have to listen to it seven or eight times before it struck a chord with me but now it's a big favourite on the album.

I think it is a good album although the only real "spark" for me is Happy With You, the way Dance Tonight and New were the sparks from their respective albums. I quite liked Fuh You at the start but it has become quite tedious. The other highlights are the medley, Dominoes and Confidante. The one song I cannot listen to is Despite Repeated Warnings. I think this song, even more than Fuh You, has a double meaning. Global warming would be the official meaning of the song but I do think it is also a dig at Donald Trump and for me, I struggle to enjoy popular music doused in politics. I don't know why pop stars do it. They are automatically alienating a large section of their audience. Anyway, it's a mid table McCartney album and a very welcome release.

day tripper cheers Kregg...well it seems that none of us agree on what to leave or (or include)...which is fine!

you were wise to hold your opinion until the hype died down, im still not ready to review it, and its difficult to find 'dead time' to listen to it

I enjoyed it better than New, but still think at least half of it is pretty weak to me. Musically very diverse and overall very “him,” but I find this set of lyrics his cringiest since Off the Ground. Can’t stand Fuh You (video godawful too), Despite Repeated Warnings, and Back in Brazil. The Target bonus tracks were both better than all these. Several very solid new tracks though.
