My first year of marriage, my wife and I came upon some financial hard times. I pulled out my collection, of which I hadn't touched in about 4 years other than to pack them up to move, and went through saw I had some serious money in the cards. I started contacting buyers and got one deal in the works. I felt my wife's hand on my shoulder. She said "You're crying, don't sell those". I called the buyer and explained that I couldn't bring myself to sell the cards. He laughed and said it happens all the time and also said "Welcome back". It took a few years, but about a month ago I got the collection out again and started deck building. I'm playing again. And my wife said to me "Aren't you happy I didn't let you sell those?". I married a keeper!

I had a Niv Mizzet commander deck. I love Izzet and love playing instants to do things. But Niv Mizzet was too slow to bring out and I'd often die before I can even do anything. But just recently I changed commanders to Adeliz? A flying with haste that cost 3 Mana. I brought it out on turn two and started hitting my opponents right away. This was more my speed of playing. I need to focus

I quit 8 years ago, I was 15 and started high school, no one else among my peers played MTG anymore and the local gamestore got torn down. None of my friends retained their interest and I had no one left to play with. I stored all my cards into a wooden treasure box I made myself and stored it away, the last booster I ever bought was from Time Spiral. And now, just a month ago, I was cleaning my stuff and found the box, all cards still inside, at mint or near mint condition, most of them, were from the Ravnica series, and now I play again.

Thanks for re-igniting the spark in my passion for this game. I have come very close to giving all my cards away but your enthusiastic videos have fascinated me, together with the fact that I've just moved in to University and a flat mate of mine happens to play Magic, so we now have a game once in a while. I have stuffed hundreds of cards in a big old dusty box at home where I will be returning to in four years after I complete my degree, I cannot wait for that moment! It will be, as you so eloquently described, "like uncorking a bottle of time"! Man, I love nostalgia.

Wow! What a great video. So many parallels with my experience. Started on Revised -> 4th Edition. Hated Fallen Empires, loved Ice Age. I was like your friend, I kept my cards. When I 'quit', it was not a hard stop. The group of friends that I played with slowly disbanded due to life, jobs, moves etc. So slowly over time the frequency that I played Magic dwindled until it became not at all, for many, many years. About a week or so ago I found myself looking through my cards and thought it was time. Time to teach my 12 year old daughter how to play. I found my Ice Age starter decks, I bought an entire box of 10. 6 of them were still in plastic. I opened them all ... :) (I was never one to care much about value in $$ terms. To me the value is in playing with them). I built 2 very simple decks and taught my little girl how to play on a Friday evening. She picked up the basics rather fast and we enjoyed a weekend of MTG together. Christmas will bring some Origins cards into our collection. I can't wait to see her start learning more advanced concepts and techniques. I really am looking forward to helping her build her own deck, for me this is the most fun. Building a deck from scratch and then winning with it. Cheers Professor and thanks!!

Very rarely does a commander game go past turn 5. I stopped playing them. Just play with local friends. I always thought commander was casual. Also I've only been playing for about 6 months so I'm sure those decks aren't as good as I think.

I wish I had seen this video half a year ago, I sold my collection of 17 years thinking I was going to do something I ended up not doing. I started collecting when I was 8! I didn't even learn to play until I was 12-13. I sold my entire history with the game, all those random cards from tempest urza's block, to when I learned to really play in onslaught, to when I worked at a card shop around scars of mirrodin. Every deck I owned and all of my deck staples. My whole 5k of commons an lands and nearly 20 deck and 2 newer commander decks. I feel sick thinking about it sometimes. But I started again by buying some pauper decks on mtgo and a set of shocklands and fetch lands for modern. Hopefully I will have a new collection sometime soon and I will definitely hang onto this one. If I ever leave the game again, I'll hand it over to a friend, so I can revisit my past if I need to.

Hi, Prof -- Great essay. I was surprised at the parallels between your leaving of MTG and mine, although I was six years out of college in 1996 when I sold my collection to a friend (also for $450!). I had been introduced to Magic shortly after it debuted, but the game had lost its charm for me once people started constructing decks. I didn't have the time or inclination to go there, and when it became impossible for me to win even a casual contest, the joy was drained out of it. I was happy when that friend suggested he'd buy me out. I played a few more games over the next two years, borrowing decks from friends still in the hobby, but I'd bought my last pack. No regrets here; I am still turned off by the lengths and depths of effort required to be the least bit competitive these days. However, a few weeks ago I accidentally found what may be my way of playing Magic. I attended my first-ever sealed deck tournament at a BFZ pre-release weekend while on an out of state trip. I was bored on a Saturday and found an FLGS that was hosting the tourney and got in at the last minute. I'd hardly looked at a Magic card in years so many of the powers were inscrutable to me at first. (Ingest? Ally? WTH?) But as I opened those boosters, I saw a lot of blue and black cards and put together a deck that, back in the day, we called The Bruise. My blacks were actually almost all Elrdrazi cards, and once I got the hang of that Ingest ability, I really took to it. One of my opponents even helped me fine-tune my deck after he saw how I struggled with it early on. I had a great time, despite going 0-3 in the pool. In fact, I only won one game, but that was in the third match which turned out to be a barn-burner. I handily took the first game, but in each of the next two my opponent and I were down to 2 life at the end game, desperately attacking and countering until one of us finally drew That Card I Need. And the fact hit was he who drew it in both games hardly mattered. It was great fun. Since then, I've sold all the foils I found in the packs (nothing special, but enough to almost pay for a board game expansion I'd been coveting), and set the deck aside for probably the indefinite future. But I am looking forward to the next pre-release weekend and my next sealed deck tourney. I may be a board gamer to my core, but I always enjoyed MTG and playing that pre-release tourney brought back all the reasons why. Cheers!

I first started playing Magic during Kamigawa, really got into it during OG Ravnica. After Time Spiral, I was getting a bit older, hitting that point in middle school where everybody was trying to be really cool. I sold almost everything I had at the time in a garage sale for far too little because Magic was "for lame nerds". After Zendikar came out, I got back into it sort of, but at the time all my older friends where starting to get jobs and eventually bought a bunch of Rise of the Eldrazi stuff and had all these crazy huge creatures I couldn't beat. I quit again because I couldn't keep up. I played on and off but didn't really buy much product. Then, around when Innistrad came out, I started missing Magic a lot. More and more of my friends were getting into it. Then I got a job and a month later RtR came out it was a huge nostalgia trip for me. "Holy shit, Ravnica!" I exclaimed, "I remember that place, it was awesome!" My friend and I split the Izzet vs Golgari deck, and I got the Izzet intro deck later. Then later, I started buying cards of my own. Shortly before Theros I started playing Standard. And around when Born of the Gods came out, a card shop opened up not even a five minute walk away from my house and I've only gotten more into the game since then. I regret all those lulls I had and especially when I sold off a bunch of my old cards. I now cherish any Kamigawa or Ravnica cards of mine I find because it was a part of my past as a Magic player.

Even had foil full arts. I had that deck twice It was my first deck id ever gotten to that point, but when it rotated i sold the whole thing... 300 dollars... I had put a little over 15 hundred into it. I regret it more than a lot of things. I loved that deck and loved playing it. Hell, even thought it loved me. Always gave me good draws, pulled everything i needed the moment i needed it. And i sold it for 1 fifth it's worth in cash, and zero times its worth in emotional value. I betrayed it and my cards. My beautiful land and my beautiful Foil thassa's. My promo Judge's Familiar's and nightveil specters, custom art frostburn weirds, tidebinder mages and Master of waves. I don't remember when I first started to play Magic. It was a friend of mine that have introduced me to the game, with all rules wrong. Maybe I was under 10. I was amazed about that game, even not playing as I should play. I didn't have enough money to buy cards and he and his friends gave some to me. I remember some years later playing with a bunch of friends, but for some reason I don't even remember I quit. Two months ago I got back to the game and I'm obsessed again. And of course I MISS THOSE OLD CARDS SO MUCH. I'd love to see them in my new collection. 2023 I'm introducing my little boy of 6 to the Amazing World of Magic the gathering. He loves to see the arts in it. Maybe, he can use all my cards and carry on with the legacy of Magic

This one hit me pretty hard. The part about leaving behind certain cards not only for money value but because they are important shards of cardboard that you've held and had good times with and loved. Nearly my entire collection was stolen and since it's been hard to get back into it. I have decks to play with but every time I look at cards it just makes me sick to think about all that I've lost. So I guess the question is how do you come back from that? I lost all of my commander stuff, legacy stuff, many of my modern staples that I was saving up. Difficult to have the drive when you lose that much.

DCAMM720 Come on man I know it's really sad that your stuff got stolen but:#1 : Buidl budget decks and slowly build your collection again #2 : PLAY DRAFT(cheapest format ever and pretty much the most fun) #3 : Build a cube form your remaining cards and make events at your house for idk 2 dollars and keep the money from the cube events that you make so you can buy your cards back #4 : If you have any suspissions of who stole your cards tell that to the police(I'm speaking seriously WHAT THYE DID IS STEALING AND THEY NEED TO BE PUNISHED FOR IT THEY SHOULD BE PUISHED EVEN IF IT'S CARDBOARD THAT THEY STOLE IT'S YOUR FCKIN CARDBOARD AND IT HAD A FCKIN CONNECTION WITH YOU THEY DON'T HAVE THE RIGHTS TO STEAL IT FROM YOU!!! sorry for my rant I'm just really really angry by what I read.Heads up man!Even if you quit magic just remember all the good memories you with it.

Thanks for both of those comments. I got mine stolen out of my car. Someone busted out my window and just took everything. Again I still have decks to play with and I play modern so I do have 2 decks I can still play with but the things in the binders were solid foils. Legacy/modern staples mostly with a section for commander staples. It hurts so I'm taking a break as of now. Local shops don't really play modern except one so I'm gonna go see if I still feel like playing. I can't even bring myself to finish one of my decks because I feel like it's pointless. Wow. This hit home so hard for me. I had almost exactly the same experience in 1999. I can categorically say that you are 100% correct about the decision to sell cards. I sold my cards and i regret it so much today. A set of four Force of Wills, some Reflecting Pools, Wastelands, Shivan Dragons and a pair of Strip Mines (and a bunch of cards that had been good in what was then called Type 2 format) were sold in a fit of disillusionment and frustration with the game for a little less than $30 (unlike you, I'm still bitter about the price i got - suffice to say I sold to the first buyer that came along). I had come into the game at 4th edition/Ice Age and that was what Magic was to me, but the ever-increasing frequency of the expansions and the chase for new cards to stay competitive burned me out and I hated the game when I left it. But as you say, those memories are impossible to shake. I kept all the cards I couldn't sell and the pang of regret I get when I haul them out is awful. I wish i could get my old decks back.

Hey Professor, thank you. So much. I had quit the game around Dark Ascension with the intentions of never coming back. I had played Standard ( I've learned my lesson on this) and had quickly become frustrated. My group of friends had left the game at that point and I had gotten sick of it. Now it's nearly five years later (I'm not a math major either) and I'm back in the game. A few months ago I was just searching around youtube and one of my suggested links was your channel so I watched this video. I then watched all of your videos, and remembered how much I loved playing the game and building these decks and even the favorite puzzle of mine of how to make a bad card, good. I remembered all the great times I had with my old friends, who I hadn't talked to in years. I reconnected with them, and even though I had sold my collection, I began to rebuild. I used your template for my modern Elves deck, which is my favorite deck to date and am even building a Sygg, River Cutthroat deck because I loved your template list so much. I've found a love for this game I didn't think I would ever find again. Thank you so much professor. You are an inspiration.

I'm so glad I got to watch this video. I started playing in Revised as well and quit shortly after the Urza block. I kept all my cards at my parents house after I moved out not thinking about ever going back for them. It wasn't until I joined the Navy many years later when I payed my parents a long overdue visit when we were in port at Hawaii that I looked for some of my old belongings. My decks were still in their old sleeves just the way I left them. I laughed to myself when I stumbled upon a sliver deck that no one wanted to play against. All of he memories of the game, good and bad, came back and I knew I needed to take a few decks back with me to play some casual games on my ship. There just happened to be a few guys that also played and that's where I picked the game back up (original Innistrad). I've been playing ever since. You've just earned a well deserved subscribe!

I lost all my base set 1 and 2, fossil, gym, nature, and team rocket cards and also yugioh cards I had, which were very important to me because they were part of the happiness I once had. thank you all.

But after Visions came out, I just wasn't having any fun (that and the only card shop that was around I was lucky to get to once a month). a few years ago, I ended up moving in with one of my cuz's to help him out and all of his friends played EDH. After a long night of drinking and watching him and his friends play, I mentioned that I used to play back in the day. He passed one of his spare decks to me (Kallia). 3 years later I'm up to 18 of my own EDH decks and one red deck wins. I have a blast now every time I pull out my playmat both for all the new toys that I can get my hands on, and remembering all the old cards that are near and dear to my heart (the looks on ppl's faces when I play old jank like Skyshroud Elf or Minion of Leshrac is priceless). And yes, going to EDH is a very good idea. You can make one deck, and you don't have to put money into it all that often (if ever). And it allows you to try cards that you wouldn't play in other formats too.

What are your thoughts on the judges call about what happened at the Dragons of tarkir pro tour, with Chapin not revealing the Tasigur he pulled with Ajani, mentor of heroes?
@BladedEdge1239 жыл бұрын
***** I kinda have the opposite take on it, at least assuming your reaction was negative towards what happen. Like, isn't following rules to the letter, technicality and otherwise, part of that level of competition? I've be super against it at any other level of play, but with tens of thousands of dollars on the line, then you expect the rules to be enforced absolutely and with no wiggle room. The chance of someone sneaking/charming there way into higher money is too good if not. What Chapin did was clearly not on purpose, but say someone else did it and it was? Not sticking to technicalities means you allow intentional rules violations.
@mikew.1979 жыл бұрын
Carlos Elias It was hard to watch, and I have to agree the commentators made me the most angry ;
@goldenphoenix5279 жыл бұрын
BladedEdge123 Not to put words in his mouth, but, as someone who completely agrees with his statement, I can say that I have no problem with the ruling that was made. I think it was in poor taste to not cut to something else (and talk about something else) while the debacle was occurring. It shows respect for both the judges and the players to cut away and not let the commentators weigh in on something that they really shouldn't be discussing on camera. It was something that should've been explicitly between the head judge and the players, so even if Wizards felt the need to show the live ruling, the commentators probably should've been muted.
@noisepollution44739 жыл бұрын
Icarus W. The commentators were literally just stating the facts, and telling us what was happening, and why the judge call was being made the way it was. They had no influence on the call, they weren't, like, making fun of Chapin, I don't know why they're the thing that is making people angry. They did literally nothing wrong. They just didn't disagree with the call on camera, which would have been terrible PR for wizards and could have potentially cost them their jobs as commentators. Because they ARE being paid by WOTC to commentate. If there's anyone you should be mad at, it's the person who failed to make the call that they should cut away and spend time on something else while this juge call was being made. Making the audience wait for fifteen minutes and making them watch this confrontation take place from beginning to end while also not giving the commentators an out was just a bad move. The commentators were stuck in a really awkward position because nobody would cut away; they were forced to talk about this judge call for fifteen full minutes. Because what else were they going to do? And in their shoes, stating the facts is all you can really do, and that's what they did. They weren't the problem. There were problems with how this judge call was handled, but Marshall and Randy were very professional and did what they could given the circumstances.
@elili19909 жыл бұрын
Noise Pollution I might be wrong, but if I recall correctly, people are mad because they were saying things like he was trying to wiggle his way out of it, when its not like he was doing anything shady or ilegal, he was explaining loud and clear. then they said stuff about how back in the day you could change a judge call if you could get him to sympathize with you, as if in the 90's you could break any rule as long as you had a way with words.

What if your friend never brought out that old box of magic cards? Would we be without The Professor and Tolarian today? My younger brother was the huge mtg influence for me. He played for a long time and stopped at the time spiral/future sight sets. He worked at a card shop part time and was able to scoop up all those rare dual lands, judge/dci promos which he still has to this day. Since I got back in to is around RTR I've been slowly dragging him back in to it.

Thanks for this video. I’m just discovering it in 2020 during the pandemic. I quit around 2002 and lost most of my collection, through a combination of selling, moving, and my parents tossing them. What amounted to a few thousand dollars in 2002 would today have been enough for my family to live off of and not have to work again. I still would pay just about anything though just to be able to peruse through my old collection for a couple of hours, enjoying the memories and seeing all the signatures of my friends on cards (my friends and I that were seriously competitive used to sign each other’s beta lands and draw on them). I miss those cards.

My husband has been playing since 2008 ish and nowadays it is so difficult to find in person games. He has been thinking of quitting for a while and it breaks my heart. Sure these damn cards take up a whole room in our house, but to see him lose passion in his hobby is far worse.

I quit Magic twice! Once in late 2010, sold my cards (including all Eldrazi Titans, foil Damnation from Planar Chaos, a playset of Verdant Catacombs and other good stuff). I got back into the game after my wife got me all five Commander pre-cons for my Christmas 2013. I got really crazy, assembled three really powerful and expensive Commander decks, played a lot...only to quit half a year later, late 2014, and sold all my cards...again! Guess what...I just started playing again, and I will never sell my cards again. I regretted it twice already, don't want to regret it again.

I get the "quit standard" point, but no for money. Sure, Standard is a grind and you gotta stay up to date. But (!) you can get a decent, if not top tier, Standard deck for around 100 bucks. You can't even think about gettin into Modern below 350 or so. So, while keeping up with the Standard Meta may be tiring and needing to buy the newest Set's staples might seem expensive, the BARRIER for breaking into Modern or god forbid Legacy (RIP 200+ bucks for a playset FoW) is just so high. My personal story is that I went for the most budget viable Modern deck I could find, Living End, around 2 years ago, I still had to pick up upwards of 300 Euros. And playing Modern doesn't mean you don't have to learn the meta. Sure, it changes less than in Standard but it still changes and there are much more deck types you have to learn when you enter the format.... not even talking about Legacy. So if your budget is small, let's say per month, you can't really not play standard because while long-term, Legacy or Modern might be more worth it in terms of non-decaying value, the barrier of entry is just SO. HIGH. For Modern especially since Modern staples have just increased and increased in price in recent years, be it fast lands, strong artifacts or any much-played card that's from a set before Khans of Tarkir.

I am looking for a place to let my brain pour out it's Elder Dragon-y goodness... What advice would you offer a fellow M:tG enthusiast, in regards to filming their own videos? Your reflections were quite moving, so I felt compelled to leave a comment and 'thank you' for sharing. Like many others on here, I too had a similar experience as yourself back in the 90's... I'm a "revised edition" kid I suppose. Although the point of this video is to share personal insights to that younger generation who may be going through what some of us had gone through back in our days, the actual reason for me stumbling upon your channel, and subsequently this video, is that like yourself a few years back, I've recently had that 'fond walk down memory lane' and am trying to get back into Magic once again. Luckily, I never sold my cards all those years ago, and despite so much changing, it's sort of like starting at the beginning; I'm actually excited by it. So my dear Professor, I just wanted to voice my appreciation for your channel, that your logical and thoughtful advice, knowledge, humor, and all-around great attitude is refreshing and comforting as I reacclimate into MTG. So I thank you!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story! We have lived a bit of a parallel life (not the card :)) I was a senior in college when MtG started, and I played with friends and my daughter until the same lack of interest in the sets you described happened to me. I gave all my cards to my daughter (at that time now 14) who sold those stacks of "Force of Will" and Dual Lands to feed her growing addiction to standard. Which I don't regret, it gave her loads of fun during her high school years. For myself, I returned to the game during Avacyn Restored when I met a dear young man who later would become my husband. What a great couples activity this has become for us! I hope we both stay in the game for rest of our days. This Christmas, however, my daughter (now 30) showed me my old Shivan Dragon over Christmas, and I cried tears of joy and found myself lost in memories of friends long gone.

How do I stay motivated to keep playing(and losing)? Thankfully, I can still follow great magic coverage and tournaments, and the ever increasingly awesome Magic community and their content, like you Prof! My local game store does pretty much exclusively draft. It’s not all that cheap at the cost of four or five boosters per night (three to use plus prize support), but on the bright side it keeps them in business. And yes, both the game stores and wotc encourage draft and standard because it sells their product. They have to keep the lights on, and occasionally selling a Commander deck prebuilt just isn’t going to do it.

I'm not even 5 months back in to the game, and I am considering not bothering with it anymore. It's all netdecking! There's no creativity. I haven't even done FNM once! Because there is no format for me, where I can just PLAY. Rulesrulesrulesrulesrules. How can you just play and have fun when everyone in every format is netdecking to ensure maximum competition and minimum creativity and fun? Netdecking is CANCEROUS to Magic: The Gathering.
@jonahmatso19208 жыл бұрын
+Cowol Jar Woff No, it's not. It is nessecary for competative magic. either treat it as a challenge to create an even better deck, or just play edh or something.
@cowoljarwoff8 жыл бұрын
+Joanna Winters Competitive? Fine, netdeck and have as little fun as you want. Though I STILL wish people wouldn't. Even when it is so-called "casual", it's ALL everyone does! It's ridiculous. No matter what format, everyone is trying to make these hundreds or thousands of dollar netdecks. You aren't out-playing anyone anymore, you're out-wallet-ing them. I just want to fucking play! I want to play against people who made a deck of their own fun ideas. No bans or restrictions. If you're playing casually, and not playing for massive combos or anything, then there's no NEED for bans or restrictions. All cards were created, printed, and distributed to be used. Just because people are creating decks with combos, and hundreds of people are very un-creatively COPYING it, it doesn't meant everyone is abusing these cards. I want the creativity back! I want the "magic" (huehue) that I felt in the game back in the early 2000's. Even to just play for fun there are bans.... All to make it "fair"?? When netdecking is the whole reason the unfairness in some of these cards exists in the first place! So... competitive netdeck play has even single handedly DESTROYED casual play. If netdecking somehow completely disappeared from the game overnight, and everyone was forced to make a deck from what they have, you would have a game that is more 'fair' and fun than you could ever imagine. It'd be more based on skill than wallet, and it'd create an even LARGER community than already exists. Sharing ideas is fine. Sharing your deck, what it does, for getting opinions is fine. Just copying someone elses deck is LAZY, unoriginal, boring, and not very fun. Netdecking for competitive play has crept in to effecting people who want to play for fun.... This happened like a virus. I stand by calling netdecking "cancerous".. These IS no just playing the game. There is only format after format after format full of rules that were created because of competitive people. Hence, I don't do FNM.

+Cowol Jar Woff try to play pauper. It is a legacy format with only commons and only 9 cards banned. You can be very comprtitive with a 30-40$ deck and the most expansive one isn't even one of the best in the meta, it's burn, and it's expansive just because it's 90% of a legacy burn. So no pay to win in pauper. You can netdeck, and in fact it's even fun, you do it just when you start to better understand the powerhouses of the format, the speed a deck needs, how strong each color is, and what weaknesses has. Then the game starts, when you really understand and master the best 10-15 decks of the pauper meta you have all the tools to create compleately new decks, fun strategy, new combos, and still doing it competitively using 20c cards. Play pauper man and rediscover magic the gathering

competitive magic can be very fun has a high level of skill and strategy, and just because other's netdeck doesn't mean you have to. This is a great video, sums up how I feel about my card collection now. Although throughout my magic career I've made a few bad trades and even had some parts of my card collection stolen, but the majority has stuck with me since the days of Weatherlight when I first started playing. The most valuable pieces of my collection however were during the Alara block. Myself and all of my friends in highschool had accumulated the single largest collection of magic cards we had ever bought from a single set. Every time I look at any single card from the Alara block I'm almost immediately filled with nostalgia of remembering when myself or one of my friends had used the card. Those friends gave me the responsibility of keeping all of those cards, and when I moved out of state, they told me to keep them. They kept their favorite decks, but told me to keep all of the rest. Every time I see an Alara card, it takes me back to that time with those friends. Selling my collection would be like selling some of my most treasured memories.

Hi. I confess to being totally identified with your words. My first cards were a preconstructed deck of the Nemesis. I fell in love with the game. I kept playing and collecting MTG for many years. He competed in some tournaments. But the greatest fun was to get together with friends, to set up decks and to play. After several years of not being able to play any more (for work and study) I sold many of my letters, something that I regret today. I have great memories of them. A few years ago I bought some envelopes and took out the cards that were not sold and with the old friends we play again and I feel like a 15 year old boy. Great greeting from Argentina !!!

I wish I had met The Professor a few years before... When I went to college I had no friend around to play Magic with me, so I got out when Invasion was released. I kept my blue cards (my favorite color in the game) and gave the rest of my colection to my friend's son, who was maybe eight years-old at that time. Then came Dominaria. As it happens to many of my generation, the nostalgia got me right where in the gutts. I was eager to get back: I got my wife in to Magic and that kid who inherited my old cards is now finaly learning with us. I love it when the Professor talks about community because now more then ever I believe that is what we all need (not only here in Brazil, but all around the world): a fellowship of brothers and sisters, living in harmony and respect. Magic and the Professor are always teaching me this. Thanks.

Great video, I had a similar experience when I first entered high school days but mostly to peer pressure from my classmates and friends telling me that magic was nerdy and looked down upon. That was nearly 15 years ago, I'm glad to see how much the magic community has grown when I came back to the game 2 years ago, or maybe I have grown because at 30 you really don't care about silly connotations of being "nerdy."

This touched me and it i like hearing things like this from players. Memories are one precious thing we get from this game. Thank you for posting this video and hope to see more personal thoughts from you.

I've watched a few of your videos before and enjoyed watching your synapse, of education of the game with love of the game. This video truly spoke to me in regards of when I got out and just recently coming back in with Eldritch Moon. 4 Edition is where I began and Onslaught is where it slumbered. I lost my Sliver Deck my prized possession misplaced during a move. Morning it's lost I pushed the thought away and moved on to joining the military. Now that I'm out and reconnecting with MTG I'm on a quest to rebuild it and hopefully mabey find my bottle of time you've spoken of.

I quit MTG in about 1995. Had a 800 card collection mostly 4th edition and sold the whole lot. Only had one friend who played at the time and we had a falling out long ago. I’d sometimes long for that time in my life and only the memory endures now. I left for almost all the same reasons in this video but it really took me back there. I have some cards again now from more recent expansions and I have just rediscovered my enjoyment for the game through Arena. I hope to befriend some folks online and get back to the deck building. This one hit me where I live. Many thanks.

Great advice! Quitting standard was the best thing I ever did. My friends and I have a blast with casual play, and it's always fun to play older decks at the LGS and draw a crowd. You should have seen the look on the faces of the newer players when they saw my Prosperous Bloom deck fire off on turn 3 for a win!

This is a great video, You absolutely described how I felt when my 8 year old step son brought home a box of old MTG cards and wanted to know how to play the game. Seeing those cards brought back so many memories. I still remember going down to my local comic shop and seeing the old Starter Decks wondering what this new game was. I believe I payed 5.99 for my first starter deck in 96. I wish I still had them, I might have some in my dads garage in storage. I mean I know my old ninja turtles are still out there, and I still have most of my comic collection. It's just I was too young to think that those cards would be so valuable today. Anyway thanks for a great video and bringing up some good childhood memories.

I really enjoy this channel, my friends got me into MTG about 3 months ago, and we just recently found out our English teacher used to play magic, he just recently wiped the dust off a huge box of MTG cards he was storing in his classroom xD

i just started playing magic again when Aether revolt came out. I hadn't played since Ravnica: city of guilds. Commander seemed like a fun format and it awesome to use those old cards from back in the days when i played magic. One of the best part of it is that the play group hasn't seen most of the "old cards" im using in my deck so it bring alot of fun and mystery in our games :) Thank you for your videos. they're awesome.

Such a nice story. My brother and I have played, quit, and re-played Magic several times. First was during Tempest block and left during Urza block. Played again in Onslaught and left before Kamigawa. Then now, we're playing again starting from Kaladesh.

I started magic at Antiquities. I never quit magic but I stopped buying packs in about 2000. I kept all my cards and dozens of decks and, once in a while, I take them out to play with friends who did the same. I don't keep up with the game, but, once in a while I go to the game store and browse through the commons, discovering new card spending about 20$ in commons updating my deck. Unless you need the money, it is not worth it to sell your collection. Even if they are old cards, the game is still playable and fun.

first card I got back in 2006 was aeon chronicler. blue card with suspend x. I cherished that card and has been the oldest card I have kept to this date even during my hiatus from 2007-2013. wow, 6 years gone by. now I live magic and learning the ins and outs. my strongest and favorite to play is my hydra deck and my white token deck featuring espeth, my first planeswalker I got in a booster this year. mtg cards truly have become the bookmarks in my life of great events and life lessons.

Man when you talked about the sentimental significance of the cards; I was first introduced to MTG by a hairy hobbit of a man who played insane mono-black decks with Abyssal Demons and Bogbrew mechanics... with his help I crafted my first deck, mono-white angel control. Now many many years later I’ve evolved as a player, playing Commander with my signature Mardu Kaalia deck, or mono-white planeswalkers (Gideon!). I’ve found and become close friends with many other players, and somehow unbeknownst to me for a small time I discovered that my own older sister and her fiancé hold a large collection and play some really crazy decks (I still shudder at the thought of facing her Ula’s Temple sea creatures deck). All of these moments in which the game helped me forge new friendships and build stronger existing ones, I couldn’t even conceive of having not experienced them. And I am glad to say that even when life gets nuts and I take a break, I’ll never truly abandon my collection and this game. Thanks for letting me reminisce with your own story Prof., happy to share mine.

My MTG story: I had never played MTG before. I had seen people in school that we all referred too with the common terms: dork, nerd, geek, etc. I was totally dismissive of the game and all those that played it. Years later, when I was around 20 yrs old, I had some teenagers and young adults that would come over to buy pot, and they asked me if I minded if they used our dining room to play their card game, MTG. I laughed and ofc, agreed to let them use the table for their game. After a few weeks, they managed to talk me into trying it out w/ them. They taught me to play, and after a few games, I understood the pull of the game, unlike I ever had before. It's fun. A few months later, one of the guys wanted me to front him an oz. Aiite. Fine. But he didn't have any money, so he asks if he can leave his MTG collection as collateral. I'm thinkin', "this guy loves his cards. He'll be back fasho." Well, a few weeks go by, and I don't hear shit from him. He's dodgin' and shit, so I call him up and at first, he's like, "I'm gonna pay, I'm gonna pay. Can I get my cards back though?" Well, ofc not. So I start chargin' him a weekly vig. This clown eventually, instead of paying me the money, sends, no kidding, his mommy over to my house to try and claim his cards back. At this point, he owed me $65. I kept his cards. He never paid me. I still have them. That was 15+ years ago. All his dual lands, masticores, lotus petals, holofoil rares, etc. Over 1000 cards. His brass ProCounter he won as a prize for winning a local tournament, etc. Everything. He left his entire collection w/ a fucking dealer and refused to pay his debt. I'm married and live in Sweden now. I still play MTG w/ my wife, to this day. Thank God for stupid people. ^^

MTG can also be somewhat addictive and a real timesink. There are more productive or fulfilling ways to spend time sometimes.

You should do a follow up to this video... something to the effect of "So you're thinking of returning to Magic the Gathering? " You could talk about what set and mechanics brought you back in and why your love for it now is so much greater. What led to the creation of this channel? Many of us have "quit" but its always a part of you. I remember selling my cards because I wanted to leave myself no way back in. Then a dear friend that I met thru and taught to play passed away and left me his collection. I returned during Eventide and Lorwyn block is still my favorite. I sorted cards as Ibreminisced over the early days of Magic and my friendship with this guy whom I might never have become friends with if he hasn't asked me what a Llanowar Elf was. I kept asking myself why I quit in the first place. Would love to see that follow up if it's ever on your heart to make it, Professor.

Found this video years after you posted and wanted to say thanks. I almost abandoned MTG while I was in Standard after experiencing the same fatigue that you talk about. Watching your video made me reconsider leaving. Enjoying the hell out of Commander currently and have been playing for several months since watching this video for the first time. Just a pity that it's not really promoted by most LGS like Standard and FNM are. The other issue is that other than FNM or scheduled events, its rare to find anyone playing MTG at the stores. Most of the tables are reserved for DnD events and even the few times I have played recently at the stores, there's no walk-ups or interest in anything but Commander. Most of the tables are also reserved for DnD events. Rather than playing at my LGS, I get together with a large group to play every other week at one of their houses. I think the recent discovery about a large number of people leaving MTG is misinformed. I think the community is changing and becoming less reliant on LGS. Whether WotC figures out a way to better capitalize on that loss, only time will tell.

I distinctly remember why each of my friends quit magic: I had just started college and couldnt afford to keep up with standard. One friend had his deck stolen and the other gave his away. The last few friends just got bored. Fast forward a few years and i buy an event deck trying to get back in. I notice that Tolarian community college (a fairly new channel at the time) posted a review failing the deck. I'm upset that i wasted my money, but i check out the channel and find this video. It inspires me to start anew by looking at commander, modern, and using duel decks. I realize that like so many things in life, Magic can be enjoyed if you open your mind. Little do i know, one of my friends is also following the professor. Another year or two passes and here I am today. We all play magic again and it's better than ever! Thanks professor!
@svartavarg83757 жыл бұрын
babysinclairfan I suggest starting back with edh (commander) over modern since it wouldn't cost as much for a competitive deck as modern, also the duel decks can be fun 1v1 decks against each other since that's what they are made for but you should look up what strategy each deck uses before buying.

Just went through all my old cards and sorted through them all, bought some new ones, going to a pre-release next weekend. The nostalgia trip is crazy. Cool to see the game's still going strong.
