Thoughts on the Moog ONE

Here are my many thoughts on the Moog ONE, interspersed with as many sound examples as I could fit in. Please be warned, this video is over an hour long and it is not a step-by-step review. Fundamentally this video contains my personal opinions on this synth having owned and played it for the last six months. I hope you find it enjoyable or in other ways useful.

Tim, you have really went over the top with the production of this video. The camera angles, close ups, grading, everything is top notch, like top pro work. The tone and theme of how you position the lighting is brilliant. I'm not really in the market for a Moog One but I enjoyed watching the video anyway, mostly because how you talk about things and express your thoughts about gear. I'm really impressed with how much effort you put into your videos. I know how much work all the setup and editing is. I'm also a KZbinr... just over 800k subs (this is my private account). The hidden voice spread parameter can easily be saved in the init patch. The whole spread “problem” with the FXs: don’t use the FXs, they are aweful...

Thanks a lot Mark, I really appreciate your feedback a lot. I know I'm not doing YT in a business-savvy way but keeping my videos to the optimum 15 minutes feels impossible, even 30 minutes feels very superficial given the subject matter. I decided a while back to throw everything I can at each video and do the best I can with each one. It kind of satisfies the frustrated filmmaker inside me! I just wish I could produce them more frequently than I do.

Tim Shoebridge I feel the same about factory presets some-ways... Limiting what piece of discussion is more about context... it’s hard to get deep w/out giving away tips custom patches or backdoor alternate modulations... such as Ping Pong Delay VIA saw to subdue(w/out a Pan delay)

You have a truthfulness and elegance in your videos that is simply unmatched on KZbin. The hour passed quickly and all i could think towards the end is i don’t want it to end. This is the synth, the one that so many of us want but the price plays with our minds a bit. In the US we spend so much on motor vehicles, dropping 30k on a car loan is standard. Quality synth gear, that brings with it a full spectrum of emotional experience beyond even the sound, its the visceral nature like a fine piano or guitar. Guilt has no place there, we spend far more on things that matter not.

Tim, I was totally enthralled with your video and your obvious honesty about the pros, the cons and the human factors of spending so much on a synth. I have been mulling over buying one for a while and you have given the info to pause for thought, some things to trial out in a shop and crucially, a sanity check on the whole idea. Tim, this was a tremendous video in many ways! I have a Moog One also (purchased new in December of 2019) and share your adulation for the design and sound, along with some of your frustrations. The various firmware updates have brought welcome changes (my tuning was never an issue, so I am keeping that compensation disabled for now). I had not noticed the stereo spread programming quirks before now. I hope that it's a bug that will be squashed soon. Regarding cost/value of owning the Moog One: It's a luxury, yes. It's not needed, as you said. But it is an absolute joy to play and interact with. What gives me some peace of mind is Moog synthesizers, especially flagship models like this, tend to hold (or increase) their value over the years. All that said, I do hope that you find time and desire to produce additional videos exploring the Moog One. Your content is so well presented and informative that I can see many owners of this synth will find your efforts both educational and enriching. There just isn't much online devoted to really digging into the various mod matrix settings, in particular, along with more nuanced programming ideas like you've demonstrated in this video. One question: The patches you demonstrated were sublime. Do you have any plan or desire to offer sound sets for sale? Thanks again for the time you put into this video.

For me Moog One is simply out of budget, but you learned me to enjoy this instrument and while I was watching, I can say that Moog One is actually very very similar to my Oberheim Matrix in all the posibilites and various options / routings (of course One is more overwhelming, but many similarities are there). Outstanding, well-produced and comprehensive review. I was amazed with how much your conclusion parallels my feelings about the One. I also purchased my 16 voice second hand from eBay for about the price of a new 8 voice with tax, about eight months ago. I struggled for a long time with trying to justify the cost, and I’ve almost sold it a few times. I have settled in with it now, realizing that there is no one poly that can do what this does. I have owned a few Alesis Andromedas, and each one has been problematic. The A6 is technically more powerful, but the OS is far less intuitive than the One’s, and while there are some who have reliable Andromedas, that has not been my experience. The Andromeda’s sound, in my opinion, was more sterile than the One. I have also owned an OB6 and a Prophet 6. While they sound fantastic, I was always disappointed with the lack of voices, LFOs and modulation options. The River was a serious consideration for me before I bought the One, but being in the U.S., I felt it too risky to buy something so high priced from Europe with no U.S. service option; the logistics of sending it back to France for a repair are nightmarish. The One has a semi-permanent place in my studio for now. It sounds incredible and it will take years to get close to utilizing all the potential this beast has. It’s a guilty pleasure that I am privileged to own.

I loved this video Tim, well put together, this is indeed a monstrous bit of kit. Factory presets were made to disappoint and inspire users to create their own sounds, the sound of it however is pretty cool, but give me one of these and I'll score an independent sci-fi the day after lol, it's gorgeous from a form factor standpoint, i don't mind the size at all. Overall great video, lovely device, not perfect, but lovely anyways. To me the UDO Super 6 is definitely stereo standard for analog synths. Cheers !

Been watching moog synth reviews for the last week. This is the most well made one imo. I really appreciated you touching on the stereo pan effect not working with any effects other than delay. Has this been addressed in any way one year later? And you saved up great ear candy after the stereo disappointment section, that track is quite marvelous and works well doing a "so this is a bummer, but it's still a breathtaking synth!" The ending section was also wonderfully and genuinely honest. A video worthy of this synth.

Thanks Tim. Very nice run-through! I'm still mulling this one over mostly because of the cost and the real estate it would take up in the music room. The fact I could get another OB6 module and 2 Arturia Polybrutes for less money definitely gives me pause to mull it over some more. Your video has slightly budged me towards a "yeah" vote (conditionally if they can find a better fix for the tuning problems), but I'm still not there yet. Was laughing at your attempt to diagram the filter routing, because I went through the same thing with my Alesis Andromeda video. I even had the graphics totally DONE (or so I thought), when I realized I didn't understand it correctly. Back to the drawing board I went, and I was still only half happy with the finished results. Again, great job!

Tim, you did an excellent job with this overview of your experiences with the Moog One. I can see sound designers and film scoring artists buying this synth, given its vast capabilities. I believe in 20 years the Moog One will be coveted much in the same way as past "super synths" such as the Yamaha CS-80 and Roland Jupiter 8 are today.

It really hasn’t garnered the kind of excitement and reverence that would suggest this … Seems more of a tweaker’s synth, than a player’s synth … Moog’s past classics were all much simpler, with a more raw sound … It sounds nice, and big, but not particularly Moog-ish, to me - sounds such that it could be anything, really …

Tim, I recently purchased a ONE. My initial experience has been very challenging. Listening to this video has helped me feel comfortable it's not just me. I've been struggling to consistently get an even sound across the keyboard. I've literally described it to Moog exactly as you have. From the middle of the keyboard up is usually fine. However, the low to mid registers are very often muddy, muffled and not crisp or clear. I was also very surprised with the factory presets and how poorly the ONE sounded when I initially booted. I've run the calibration and am still having the same results. I own a Matriarch and the sounds, out of the box, are sooo stirring! I would be so grateful for any input as I'd love to fall in love with my ONE! Thanks! Mitch

It took me some time to do presets, but machine is the beast and the best out there. This synth is the classic and legend already, but not for everyone, for sure. Same like Porsche 911 GT2RS. Many would call it stiff, uncomfortable, loud and quirky. Expensive and maintenance hungry. It is all true.

Tim, thank you very much for this video. Your presentation and delivery are excellent. You produced this in a way that made one hour go by in no time flat; your material and presentation of it were that good. I did have one thought on your critique of the stereo implementation of the synth and that is this: Moog likely understands quite well that this instrument is going to be used mostly in recording studios due to its price. That means that it will be plugged into a mixing desk or directly into an audio interface and recorded with a DAW. This environment will likely already have a whole lot of effects plugins including a sophisticated stereo spread effect. I have an excellent stereo LFO that I use to modulate things like hi-hats and synth voices as it is (it was free too). I think they simply made an assumption they didn't need to go too far into that. Perhapts not a great assumption but, an assumption nonetheless. If you need to implement a more complex, random-sounding ping-poinging, stereo effect, can't you use an LFO with a random waveform modulating the stereo spread effect?

If Moog had considered the effects section more carefully then they might have added the effects as modulation destinations, which they did not. Yes you can definitely modulate the VCA and I do that in a few of the patches 👍

Great video, Tim. I also have a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with the One. As someone who likes to create my own patches, it just can't be rivaled for possibility. You could do a whole video on the noise section alone! I sold my Prophet 6 because even though I loved the sound of it, I just couldn't get it to do what I wanted (also because I had to sell a lot of things to afford the One). Not sure if anyone has already mentioned, but the way to use the filters in serial is to send the source to the SVF only and turn the mix knob all the way to the right (ladder filter). Cheers.

Exceptional review Tim, loved hearing your thoughts on this synth. I have a lot of love for the Moog One, but its definitely been a struggle. Mine is the 7th one made, wich is awesome, but it has big time tuning issues. Unison, wich I love to use is almost useless. That was broken in an early firmware update, hope its fixed now.. I've litteraly stepped away from it for a few months due to frustration. But I'll load up the latest firmware here soon and give it another go. You've made some wonderful sounds for sure! Congrats 👏

Thanks for the highly informative and top notch produced video! Despite the setbacks, there's something certainly nice about it having it just all in front of you in one box, just ready to explore. Time to start saving, fingers cross theyre still up for sale in a year... or three :P But, if they did bring out a smaller low spec mono timbral poly in the sub37 format, I'd be down for that. I have one and often multitrack it and wish for just a 4-6 voice version - same form factor would great, just put the poly button next to duo mode or something. Probably (almost) would be the only synth I'd own if they brought that out. Here's hoping

Interesting thoughts on the panning causing some weird lackluster quality to some patches, I had a very similar experience as you when trying out the Moog One. I saw one at a Guitar Center and was like "OMG I'm about to play this thing until my eyes fall out," but about 15 minutes later I was ready to move on, and ended up losing track of time playing a Matriarch instead. I was using headphones, and figured maybe it was just too complex to really shine in a quick jam without a manual or anything, but I feel a little more justified in my initial impression now.

Tim, that is actually an EXCELLENT video you put together, very useful as it explains extremely well why you would and wouldn't want a Moog One at the same time. I really sympathize here, the only difference is that, unlike you, I didn't manage to justify the price of it 😅 (and therefore I stopped everything right before placing an actual order). I couldn't stop watching, because you made your points so clearly I really wanted to see more. And I'm glad I did because I discovered a few additional things I didn't know about this synth, very cool! The sports car analogy is *exactly* how I feel about the Moog One. It is definitely a luxury product, yes you could get some separated synths/VST's and ultimately get something more functional and probably sonically superior to it without all the quirks, but that's not the same life you'd be living here. Come on, this is like jewelry, it has absolutely no utility whatsoever, it's just... nice. Speaking of nice, what a nice work you have done here! Lots of very useful information and attention to details. And I know how much of a pain it is to create such a lengthy thing, so that's even more kudos to your credit. The sound examples are also really nice, and as usual, the picture looks amazing, very stylish LUT and nicely lit overall. Congratulations, and most of all, thank you 🙏

So just getting round to this fantastic video. Wonderful! Thanks as well for the conclusion comments. So yeah, I’ve got a bi timbral vintage Oberheim OB8 and an OB6 as well. I reckon I can get close to what this thing can do with a combination of these, although it’s Oberheim and not Moog. Thinking of maybe get a grandmother or matriarch for more of that moogy vibe. Very informative and helpful video. Thanks for sharing. Grandmother and the Matriarch seem far more immediate and reminiscent of the minimoog and model d. Must admit that I'm finding the grandmother and the mother-32, DFAM and subharmonicon to be more inspiring in the short term. I've had a Moog One for six months now and there is so much to learn and enjoy. The aftertouch and polyphony are very enjoyable and I miss them when back on a monophonic (fun as they are). Such an amazing instrument. Seems to be an entire modular set up in one instrument. The mod matrix section in particular has a lot of depth. Regarding stereo spread, hopefully a firmware update will address this.

Well...this video, great video, it deserves pages and talking about many things...I think all the considerations, all questions we must answer to ourselves, price, usability if it worth every penny or if we really need it, are important. Just let me say about my thoughts...I started playing with synths when I was 12 years old, now with 53, I am thinking about some wrong things I did in the past, like selling my Oberheim OBX-A, Juno-60, MS-20...etc just because they had some inconvenient issues like tuning, no midi, no memory presets, weight...anyway. Now I am really sorry about those decisions because a real OBX-A maybe a heavy keyboard and with those tuning issues, it's not the best keyboard to go to the stage ...oh...MS-20, changing all parameters between songs could be a nightmare but, that sound....now, I am watching this video, and I completely in love with this Moog One. I have a Moog Little Phatty what I love it (plus a DX7 II, Emulator III xp, Wavestation etc) and I would like to recover some of those old synths...in some way, because even working with some of the best VST synths nowadays like Diva, Zebra, Omnisphere, etc the way to achieve good sounds can't be compared with the old fashion way for people like me. I think this truly a "sports car", it's a true inspiration.. .

Thanks Tim. A alternative from a different and younger manufacturer is the River by Baloran: 8 voice, 4 parts, each with split/layer/seq/arp. You can even control external gear by MIDI, USB or CV/Gate. Check the videos on my KZbin Chanel, there is a River playlist.

You are a great reference for getting useful insights into synths! Maybe that's because you are not just spot on and knowledgeable, always naming stumbling blocks besides great sides, but you are also human and musical in a way which I find very helpful and sympathetic. Thanks for this video! I belong to those who don't buy that one (happy with my Prophet 6 and other keyboards, besides lots of VSTis), but finally understand, why and how this synth can be an asset for others.
