Every single one of these animals has adapted to fit its environment. Saying that an adaptation doesn't make sense because we can't understand its advantages reflects a kind of species chauvinism. Whether the snub-nose monkey has the face it does because a fleshy nose would be prone to frostbite or for some other reason, we can rest assured that the miserly process of evolution had its reasons. As a Yank, I'd often heard that the turkey was closer than any other living bird to being a dinosaur. Nice to know that the hoatzin is even closer to the extinct raptors than America's bird of holiday obligations.

Yay! Slow-Worms! I love these things... I used to keep them as pets when I was kid. Though saying that, I found one this year to feed my nostalgia! (I'm 41! Kept them from the age of around 7 years old until I was about 16/17). I only kept it for a week before letting it go again. I've seen them drop their tails a few times, but you've got to stress the shit out of them to get them to do that. When I was a kid I kept one for about 4 or 5 years. I kept it in a big tank, occasionally with a mate (I'd let the interloper mate, and then release it. Otherwise they'd just fight each other and they can really do some serious damage to each other! As they're very territorial animals)... Anyway, around late September I'd release Sid the Slow-Worm, and come springtime my mum would usually unearth him from the warm manure around her rosebushes, yep, he'd hibernate in the horse-shit! 😊 And for 3 or 4 years I repeatedly found him like that... What's really nice about them is that they can grow very used to humans and mine used to curl up and sleep in my hand, or lap, or on my chest. Stroking his head and he'd snooze away. If I stopped he used to open his eyes, lift his head towards my finger and want to be stroked back to sleep again. God, I loved that little thing... And they can grow quite large too. Another one I found was at least half a metre long, and was the largest I ever found. It was OLD, dark grey with blue spots. So big and fat, it's head was easily as big as my thumb, and it's diameter was about an inch/inch and quarter - in other words - VERY FAT, BIG AND LONG! 😊 THAT particular bastard remains the only Slow-Worm to have ever bitten me! And it literally dangled from the inside of my thumb, where the loose skin that connects your thumb to your forefinger is. It chomped onto it and had a real good grip! They have like a ridge of 'teeth' on the inside of their mouths (no lips exactly). That one I wasn't keeping, though I'd have loved to! But it was so big it would escaped really easily, and it probably would have eaten the other Slow-Worms I had, as it was THAT MUCH BIGGER! More like a grass snake's size really. I'd take a guess that it was about 20/25 years old at least, his dark grey colour and bright blue spots gave his age away. They can survive up to being 25/30 years old at the more extreme end of the scale. Not a lot get that far because of predation... Never come across another Slow-Worm anywhere near his size ever again. And NEVER had a Slow-Worm attack me before - ever! 😊 LoL! Anyway, I'm rambling now... Can you tell that I absolutely love these creatures? 😁 As a kid I read up A LOT about them... People STILL freak out when they see them too. Only a few weeks ago, walking down an alleyway, I passed a family with their kids peering at two Slow-Worms and they warned me to stay away from the baby Adders! 😊 I took one look and just scooped them both up and offered them to the young kids and told them they were harmless Slow-Worms, about a year or two old (golden yellow in colour with a black stripe down their backs). I really freaked the parents out! Offering these potentially deadly Adders to their kids! 😊 😂 I corrected them and pointed out the anatomy and physiology of the Slow-Worms to them. Nothing to be scared of basically! 😊 Right, anyway! I'm really finished now! Didn't mean to write a short essay here! 😊 Oh yeah, lastly, they ain't SLOW at all! They can be pretty quick in the grass. They need to be to avoid the crows that like to peck holes in them. 😕😢 Anyway, I love 'em! 😘😍

Hey Nick, I'm another Nick ... living in NZ now but I grew up in England down south in kent and we had an old chalk quarry on our farm full of slow worms. I used to love the little buggers. and used to catch and play with them all the time.

I saw an Assassin Bug one time without knowing what it was, and I was so taken aback... a very intimidating-looking bug! Fortunately Google Lens once again played the part of the modern Pokedex and identified it for me. It was like discovering a new species lol Also, Fishing Spiders are very cool (and also intimidating). I see them all the time! Edit: I took some pictures of the Assasin Bug in question. I linked them below in a reply, in case anyone actually reads this and wants to see. It was technically a Wheel Bug (a more specific type of Assassin Bug) and it was likely a juvenile. It was big, definitely all of an inch long. Very cool!
