You live in an amazing country. I was there around 10 years or so ago and was in Lima, Arequipa, Puno (and Lake Titicaca) and Cuzco areas. The best trip ever! I was there when the big earthquake happened near Ica. I was in Lima at the time. I’ve never experienced anything like that before and It certainly made it a memorable trip. I really would like to return one day and see more.

@@crisqr16 I'd love to go back and visit the north and rainforest. One day I hope! The food is amazing too. There are only a few Peruvian restaurants here in Toronto and they are good, but they don't serve Guinea pig (which I really liked) I looked up the date of the earthquake and it was in 2007 so I guess it was more than 10 years ago. If you ever get the chance Arequipa and Puno are definitely worth the visit. It's a long trip from Lima though but great sights to see along the way.

Food is actually one of the things we peruvians are the most proud of, we always ask people if they tried ceviche and stuff, even the journalists ask that to celebrities that come haha. I want so badly to go to Canada! I love snow, haven't seen much of it yet. I hope one day I can go! Didn't know there were Peruvian restaurants there, that's amazing! I guess guinea pig is not considered a delicacy for many (me included), and there must be some limitations to actually cook it. But I hope you enjoy the other dishes!

I also liked Lomo Saltado, arroz con pollo, papa rellena, anticuchos, lots of different potato dishes, alpaca, and so many other great foods. I wish I got the chance to try Peruvian Chinese food as I heard that is really good. The coca tea was great and that is very hard to find anywhere else. I wish I could get that here! The winter is great here, although a lot of Torontonians do not like it like I do. I love it when there’s lots of snow. Winter is best in Quebec, especially Quebec City. They enjoy the winter much more there.

Having been on one of those reed islands, the most memorable part of the experience was that a few children were running about during the whole tour and as expected, one eventually fell flat on his face. Everyone gasps in shock as you would when a child falls over but then a second later, it dawns on everyone simultaneously that an island made entirely of soft reeds does not have the same damaging properties of tarmac and the children get strait back up, unharmed The place is truly incredible but that stuck with me even so many years after the fact

@Safwaan Tradition I suppose? I mean there are a lot of alternatives to what they are doing, they could all just live on giant floating boats if they wanted, but at this point its tradition. Plus they need their islands to be unique like that, because it's what attracts tourism and allows them to survive. But yeah they really should add some kind of water-proof, sturdier base to the bottom then cover all of that in reed, would make their life a hell of a lot easier.

Not gonna lie as a kid growing up I’ve ALWAYS Dreamed of having an island 🏝 in the middle of the water like that, it could literally be anywhere in the world for me! I remember as a kid in the 70’s seeing pictures of castles in Europe that was built like that, and that that was the picture of perfection!

@@spencer5508 It really was extremely fun. His Pond was Huge because he raised Cattle, and built the pond so that the Cattle could always get water, and stocked it with fish. The Pond was I’d say about 1,500’x3,000’ and the Gazebo was connected by a Dock that stretched out 400’ from the bank. The only reason I knew that about the dock part is i along with my cousins helped to build it. The Center Island was 25’x25’.

I have to say, although most of this information is correct some of it has been a little sensationalized. I visited Puno and the Uros people of lake Titicaca while I was a UNI student in Peru. Some islands chose not to participate in the tourism although the vast majority did because it allowed them to afford luxuries that they previously could not have had as an indigenous people. Some islands didn’t enjoy it and didn’t participate but the several I visited did and we’re very honest about their satellite dishes and other modern luxury‘s at the bloom in tourism had allowed them. Perú has a history of discriminating against indigenous people and this boom in tourism has help them so much as a community. Many of their children do seek an education and may go on to move off the islands, although many will choose to stay simply because it is tradition and many families do not want to see their culture die. While visiting I met the Chiefs daughter of one island, and in a mixture of Spanish and her native language (I presume Quechua) she was already telling me about the island at the age of three or four. She showed me the little fish ponds that they have to grow their own fish and feed tourists. Although they do sell trinkets they also so many other things like overnight stays, clothes and traditional food/medicines

This reminds me so much of the Amish in Lancaster Pa. I knew so many of them over the years and at some point, 1970's, 80's there were some mysterious stories the press ran with and Lancaster soon became a tourist destination. The Amish religion is against such vanities, they don't even have mirrors. Ironically, a society who wants to be left alone devolves into a zoo. I would regularly pull over and berate tourist who were out of their cars, taking pictures, waving and being completely ignorant. I moved away in 2005. A few years later I went back to visit a friend and there almost none of them left. They had moved to other states as far as they could get away from outsiders. The only difference is that the UROS people haven't seemed to evolve much economically and the Amish have so much CASH they could create their own state in Canada !

Depends how you define it. The Caspian Sea has naval vessels on it, but is an inland sea. My guess would be some of the African lakes, but it depends whether you consider smaller vessels a navy. Bolivia used to have a coastline and lost it, so they probably need a fleet on the lake to compensate.

Islas flotantes, the floating Islands, are not used any longer, as far as I know. I visited the location some years ago and Uros people commute to the Islands any morning from Puno. They're just tourist traps nowadays.

Not mentioned in the video, some 200 Uros still speak the almost extinct native Uru language, but not natively anymore. There are still some 3000 Uros people, of them, around 1200 live on the floating islands (the rest on mainland Peru). They have two children schools (Christian and traditional), older children go to the mainland. So yes, they still live on these islands, and apparently the number of islands is even growing (I did not verify this claim), though most have embraced the modern life with (shared) solar panels, internet, a radio station and outboard motors on their (traditional) boats. Some people work on mainland Peru, but commute back to the islands.

I've always found the Uros extremely fascinating, as besides the obvious novelty of building a settlement on a lake out of reeds, they remind me of those out of planet human settlements you'd see on the Stargate tv series, using modern technology (although not all of them did) while maintaining a simple rural society. From a purely anthropological point of view i actually find their behavior more natural than that of most of today's humanity. Provided a good record of history is kept, good education, as in real education and not the indoctrination that currently passes as such, and finally, advancement of sciences, lets say for all the above specific modern settlement were built, i think a more simple and rural life style for "commoners" and the rest of the general population, could be a good way for humanity to overcome many of our current problems and the stigma that is the addiction to comfort, which pretty much desensitized us from reality.

Probably not but probably also not for high literature and music. There needed to be information to put the numbers into context but verbal language is possibly more complex than can be expressed in knots. However, the English language seems to be doing fine with just a few letters and punctuation compared to Chinese. One could probably write English just fine in a knot language.

I have been there, it it very interesting but the way of life is very harsh and poor. The lake stinks near the city and the area is extremely impoverished.

To be fair, that could be said for all of South America with the exception of a couple capitals or the estates of certain families. Life is hard down there.

@@cquiroz7874 No, like this is bad, worse than the norm. Bugs are everywhere on the islands and the sewage is all dumped in the lake. There is no Municipal system in Juliaca (the closest city) ever since the Army abandoned it to the smuggling cartels. It’s essentially a failed micro state with barely any working infrastructure. Tourism is pretty much the only industry that brings in a lot of money, besides the smuggling.

I was on these islands a number of years ago and it’s really worth a visit. The whole region is beautiful and the people are awesome. I’ll admit, the name of the lake was a factor in choosing to go. Guinea Pig is delicious too!
