Interestingly, I spent 5 weeks oe one of the islands of Okinawa Japan, living off of mostly very fresh sushi and miso soup. I'd spend a few days a week at an Onsen, a Japanese bath fed by mineral water, and practiced the Ashtanga yoga set for 6 6ays a week for 4 weeks. I lost 30 lbs easily although I was very well-fed. I came back to Canada and continued the yoga, but found it hard not to put the weight on again so I suspect it was probably the quality of local food that was mostly responsible for me losing my pot belly and my extra 30 lbs of weight that I have a hard time working off when I am in Canada. This reminds me of Kane Tanaka, the oldest person in the world - 118 years, 8 months, at the minute. She was interviewed a few years ago, and said she'd quite like to get to 120. Even now, there's somewhere she'd still like to be in a few years' time; I have known a few very old people, closest of all my great-grandad who was 96, and two family friends who made it to 96 and 98 respectively, and this youthful ambition is a consistent theme in those who make it to extreme old age. My great-grandad went out every single day, and he said that the day he didn't go out would be the day he said to the man upstairs, 'I'm ready to go now'. One Sunday afternoon, he went out to the pub for a pint; on the Monday, he didn't fancy it, and on the Wednesday afternoon, he died in his sleep. Can't say fairer than that!

Loma Linda University Medical Center is a world renowned teaching hospital that partners with its namesake university and provides a holistic approach to healing. My grandfather lived more than 130 years .. died around 20 years ago. When I was a teenager, I used to ask him how he could live this long and his answer every time someone ask him about that was ( I don't know, there is no secret but I always make sure of three things: 1-I eat less. 2-I keep moving. 3-Whenever bad things happen I don't get angry and if they are above my ability to stop or change I accept & adapt just like leaving a fire burning the wood to find the next day it became cold ashes and I sleep at night like nothing happened.) About his eating habits, he used to eat very small portions like a 6 year old even in a tiny dishes, the saucers that come with the espresso cup !! He used to refuse to eat in any normal size or big dishes. He was a smoker but stopped around his 30s to live a hundred after. He had a small shop and used to work daily with no help until he died. In the shop he used to roast nuts and spices and had huge grinder for coffee beans and was well known for his special coffee mix across the town. I used to work with him sometimes & I remember getting dizzy when I was roasting Anise :-)... a lot of memories coming to me now, I just miss those days & I miss him soo much. He was the only person who stood up for me and everything went down hell after he passed. I'm 40 & until now I find new things I learned from him but I didn't know when I was young with him alive. I just remembered funny thing he used to do, he used to send me to buy salted nuts from some warehouses where they sell only bulk, then when I come back he ask me to filter out the salt using steel mesh from the 25kg bag of nuts to find out at the end 3kg of salt! so he put it in a bag and ask me to go back to the warehouse and replace them with nuts and tell them we want to buy salted nuts NOT salt & nuts! I hope you learned something good and excuse me as English is not my main language.

First thank you for you sharing and Actually now that I think about my own family we tend to have good life spans! Generally those that take good care of themselves or not premature deaths mostly live 77-85years. However Growing up I remember having a great great grandma (102) on my father side and a 3x great grandma on my mother's side believed to be 109-111! If you wonder why the exact age is unknown as I understand it she was so old she never even had a birth certificate, ssn, or any form of government id we are aware of. She was literally home grown and never once went to the hospital for anything. she far outlived even some of her own grandchildren nobody was there to confirm. All I remember is that besides both of them being almost completely blind and deaf and basically able to eat nothing more solid than baby food and soups they might not know what the date or time was, but their minds was still very much whole and the stories they told I wish I could have payed much more attention to or recorded for future generations.

That list of variables is absolutely essential in longevity of lifespan. One of the most important being a purpose. Another being someone that you love, and like you said, stay physical with. Of course exercise and diet. But those things don’t guarantee anything. They’re just a list of very important items to practice if you’re trying to outlive all of those around you. Maybe you’ve got a standing bet against another as to who’ll live longer, but exactly how will you collect?

in greece, the most popular explanation for ikarians' longevity is that they live stress free and close to nature. greek islands are essentially villages surrounded by water, and ikaria in particular has taken that to heart. they reject the hustle of modern life. they prefer to take things slow.

A lovely take on the subject! and great to give Aubrey some cover! However, Aubrey's basic idea, that's even featured in the slideshow behind him, is to intermittently fix damage that accumulates in the body and manifests aging. Not "to exclude death from our genes" like you said at 20:19. He has assessed that gene editing to create a perfect metabolism, which would in turn make your body function optimally without aging forever, to be too complicated. As he shows that metabolism is too complicated, and add onto that genetic engineering, and it's just a wast problem-space. And to identify and fix damage is clearly much simpler. As there are clear things like lessening liver function, which in turn makes you frail, so as a simple example, you could just replace your aged liver with a young healthy liver, and so on. But more on the micro-biologic scale, where chemical or some other means, could remove the damage of aging that the body is unable to deal with, as we've evolved to procreate, and be a bit of a use to our tribe in old age, but not to deal with *all* the damage of aging, like some other organisms.

Anything that teaches you phrases isn't a good option. First of all, you should learn basic grammar and enrich your vocabulary. Love your channel, great information. I live on Okinawa, my wife is from here, and her grandmother is 101. Some think the local purple potato, among other things was the source of long life, but unfortunately, the diet has changed to a lot of fried food now, so I don't think Okinawa is going to remain the blue zone for much longer. 30 years ago when I first lived here, we ate a lot of the purple potato, but now, they are harder to find. :( Smoking and drinking is very common here, but the men usually drink and smoke more, so that may explain why the women live longer. My wife's grandmother also smoked until her 80's, not sure how much she drank, and her husband did pass away in his 70's. My wife worked in a nursing home/adult daycare, and there were quite a few women pushing 100 or older there.

the focus (at least in usa and maybe most developed countries) on long life rather than quality of life is concerning. while a lot of what was discussed can be classified as quality of life, it's important to know when the struggle to keep living has no quality benefit. (currently) all life ends, almost by definition. i find it sickening when people die of old age/natural causes and the response is sadness or expressed as a loss - life is limited, celebrate their contributions to the world and acknowledge our transient existence. thanks for your perspective, thoughty2 - always enjoy your content.

I come from Sardinia, one of the blue zones, and happened to watch several interviews of people who lived longer than 100 years. Some of them smoked their entire life, all of them drank wine and ate meat regularly, if not every day. Red wine, cheese and red meat are an important part of the Sardinian diet. However, they drank locally made wine and ate organic food, plus they had an active life. So it could be a combination of healthy food (=not excessively processed, no added sugars, chemicals etc), exercise and good genes.

My grandmother died just a few weeks shy of her 107th birthday. My Papa, her husband of 68 years, died at age 97. They were only two months apart in age, so she was also 97 when he passed away. She stuck around for 9 more years subsequent to his death. She would often say she was "ready to go" to be "with my Harold," but that "God must want me here for something." And everyone loved her. She'd carry mini-butterfly clips and pin them to random strangers everywhere she went: The grocery store, parking lots, doctor visits, at church, on the beach... as she pinned them, she would tell each one, "smile, God loves you and so do I." And they smiled... every time. I try to live as she did. Barring any unexpected accident or other tragedy, I hope to live a long, productive, healthy, and impactful life, just as she did. I may not make it to 107, yet it's very possible, genetically speaking, that I MAY live well into my 80s or 90s, God willing.
