"I can make a clean boost in like 10 seconds with a single transistor." Oh hell yeah. After I had built a fuzz face and a rangemaster in high school I hacked together a clean boost with a mosfet, a couple of resistors, a 9 volt battery connector and a piece of perfboard about the size of a US penny that I found while cleaning out the physics lab at school. This all hid neatly in my strat and was my "secret sauce" for a few years. The gain was controlled via the guitars volume knob and the battery was only connected if the guitar was plugged in. I was pretty proud of myself at the time, and looking over what I just wrote I guess I still am.

@@BennieTarrMusic absolutely true. And the battery type makes a difference in the Germanium fuzz pedals. Lead acid and alkaline sound different. It’s kind of weird and I didn’t believe it until I tried it. It’s not with all pedals though. Sometimes you don’t notice much of anything. And I’ve measured the voltage with a meter. When a 9v starts to dip around 7.5 -8VDC you can hear the difference. It has less of a hard edge to the fuzz. Some people feel that it’s a little more musical. Notice in the video about the Boss Tonebender that it has a voltage sag switch. It’s there for a reason.
