During our family vacation, we followed the Rush Creek Trailhead, near Silver Lake, up to Agnew Lake, Gem Lake, Billy Lakes, Waugh Lakes, Island Pass & adjoining lakes, Thousand Island Lake, Clark Lakes, and finally back down to Agnew Lake to continue down the same path we had followed to the parking lot near Silver Lake (the trail head is across the street from the Silver Lake Campground). The entire path was a rather large loop of 23 miles and took us about 14 hours to complete together as a family with brief breaks throughout the entire trek. Of course if you are interested in accessing Thousand Island Lake from Silver Lake there are shorter routes which do not require a loop all the way around Waugh Lake. For instance, you could take the turn off to Clark Lakes near the cable tramway and follow that path directly to Thousand Island Lake. Or, you could also take a similar route from Gem Lake. If you do decide to do the entire route being prepared with flashlights is a must and of course something to keep the mosquitoes off will make for a more pleasant hiking experience. The mosquitoes were everywhere!
