CORRECTIONS: - The Wrath of Magnus secondary objective is better than I described here, it is MODELS not UNITS destroyed. That means even if you just kill one or two models with doombolt or something, you've VERY likely to score it if the enemy has only one psyker! Could be near auto-include unless the enemy is Grey Knights or Thousand Sons... - Tzaangor Enlightened bows auto HIT on 2+, not auto-wound. Doesn't change too much against T4 targets, but far less impressive against tougher things! - You can't stack the stratagem and the power to regenerate Magnus, it's just one or the other.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think all is dust has been slightly changed. It now only improves armor saves BUT it now seem to also have n effect on the aspiring sorcerers.

Is this a reasonable new codex from GW? Especially in light of the recent "overtuned" releases. I would love to have seen a couple of the vehicles and tzaangor options made a little more competitive and maybe a little more put into the traits/relics/strats but this seems good. No crazy codex creep, no rewriting sections of the lore (poorly), and even the new infernal master seems on point (read not obviously buffed for short term cash grab).

@@squishy1706 I did not have enough matches to make a final evaluation of this but from the two games I had as UM vs TS ... it really feals hardcore to place against as they can counter a lot of the thiengs that SM in general have going for them. Rubics are very resilient to Bolter fire and dish out some high ap in return. Some vehicles/monsters feel like straight-up better than their loyalist counterpart (Looking at you Hellbrute) for lesser points. The MW spam is kinda obnoxious, especially against characters, if you do not brought tools with you to ease the pain a bit. So far I would say TS really can annihilate some factions (Same applies for e.g. Dark Angels though *cough*) and are quite strong now if you do not happen to play against a very anti-psyker army, which is not common in my local meta atm. Lets see if the new Black Templar supplement can bring vengeance to this filthy heretics.

IMHO the biggest winner of this book are humble totally-not-palette-swap tanks, Rhino, Pred and Land Raider. Compared to other Chaos or even Loyalist tanks they are pretty good, for no extra cost!Yes, other (newer) units also get boosts but it's nice to see some oldschool stuff being... good!

These guys really need some more unique units. Compared to Death guard they’re like half the size. If they do a psychic awakening style update series I could see them expanding the TS range there. Edit: read some of the comments. Imagine Raptors, but their tzeentch birdy boys. It makes too much sense.

I think the Icons can be good for cp farm. For 30 points you basically get a free cp farm ritual per turn, and can ignore the cp relics and traits. Even if you get 2 or 3 cp in a game its good

If you combine the Cult of Prophecy warlord trait with the Warpweave mantle relic (and perhaps even Thrydderghyre), you can make an exalted sorcerer that is almost impossible to charge. (can only be charged by rolling less than 9", but the sorcerer moves 6" away, meaning you'll have to be 1-2" away and roll 7 or 8). It gets harder if infantry can surround him before charging, but then he can still attack them and consolidate away from them.

Ok, now I'm curious about a Thousand Sons vs Death Guard comparison/matchup. Though I don't know if it would be better to have Auspex do the stat breakdown, or have TTTactics/TTTitans do a 3000 point daemon primach versus daemon primarch batrep. Will mind bullets make disgusting resiliant useless? Is having T5 better than AP-2 bolters? Does a greater variety of support characters outweigh doubling down on a single battlefield role?....questions need answers.

The chatterfowl reduces the WEAPON SKILL or BALISTIC SKILL. Hit rolls can only be modified by +/-1 but changing the actual skill is different. It''s like when a vehicle degrades and its skill lowers.

A couple of points here: the Paradoxical Chatterfowl is not a modifier to attacks, it changes the WS/BS by D3, and thus would not be capped at -1. Also, the Legion Command ability Witch Warrior would not affect the MW from Smite since that power is not a witchfire.

Such a good Codex! Rules to allow your Rubrics/Scarab Aspiring Sorcerer models to do Mental Interigation (to grab victory points) and still cast psychic powers! Caballistic to increase range of psychic powers first two battle rounds (when they are most needed). Terminators with ObSec. Abilities to get +1 or even +2 strength to all Warpflamer weapons in a unit. Extra mortal wounds on top of those done by a psychic power. -1 damage strat for Rubrics and Scarabs. Auto upgrade d3 Smite to Flat 3 instead with strat. One time 2D6 Heroic Intervention for a unit with strat; that can be made free of charge if Cult of Scheming. Cult of Time can heal d3 lost wound with strat and resurrect slain model. Infernal Master could potentially do D3 + D3 + 3 Mortal wounds (9 total, how fluffy). Vortex Beast get 3d+3 mortal wound beam attack.

Magnus can be healed no more then d3 wounds a turn. All of the spells/stratagems in the spell specify that the target can only be healed once per turn. Interestingly, it seems the Mutalith Vortex Beast gets around this with it's mutant regeneration not specifying that it's been healed, so it can be healed by temporal manipulation as well. This could end up FAQd later though.

I was looking at a slightly different build: Mutation trait and relic plus dilletant for the staff abominus. It isn’t as durable, but if you cast swelled by the warp on it, you end up with 14x hit rolls with S10/AP-1/1 with mortals on hit rolls of 6. The AP is problematic, but doubling the hit rolls and adding mortals on 6’s should still make it useful, just maybe not against the same type of targets.

EDIT: I looked at the new datasheet again, and sure enough, the Exalted Sorcerers don't have the keyword anymore. They only have the keyword. On the Sorcerer and Sorcerer in Terminator Armor have the keyword now. That was a nerf I hadn't noticed yet. Thanks for pointing it out!

@@goblin6545 they also are fairly squishy for their points. they have good stratagems and powers to try and counter that, but you can only ever use those on 1 unit at a time. at 2000pts it's very easy to have the firepower to just shoot around the buffs.

Twist if fade wasn't an area effekt in the 8 edition. Psychic stalk combination with prayer glimpse of eternity glimpse wording is one dice so you can have a higher chance to pulling this of... Also nice that this ignore every form of protection (beside of resurection) Combo for termies: Rites of coalescenes heals the unit Timflux returns one Psychic maelstrom for one more timflux Warped regeneration one 3 returning termis per round... For trigger the strata (not sure if this works?) Set of a 9+ smite per pact from beyond Unholy susurrus: Disagreed with your opinion because in 8 edition it was the same and can swap smite or the cult powers... with your erata it couldn't anymore (not that gw can still make this happens) Vektorstrike and warpflame gargoyles turns a helldrake into a mw delivery service Warpweave mantle shuts down charges from reserve...

I think that has to do with their ability as an army to capitalize on the alpha strike. Putting down a solid 500 points worth of models on turn 1 allows you to just create a snowball effect

I still like TSons and I’m mostly happy with the codex, but this army isn’t looking like it will be the next AdMech or Dark Eldar. I honestly think the secondaries are the strongest buff in the whole book, with ObSec SOT’s being a close second. Rhinos with a 5++ look real good, and I am down with all the psychic shenanigans. They got the army right, thematically. I’m just not sure we are durable enough to survive against an S-tier army. I think Magnus is still going to be a one turn kill, which is not great, but he will be fun if you aren’t playing against a tuned, competitive list. The idea of pushing up the WC of smite and then using CaP to auto-cast a super-smite with Maggs does sound fun though! He just doesn’t have the defensive profile to offset how easy he is to get LoS on. I was hoping they would let us dump him into reserves for free, but oh well. Not happy about the Heldrake becoming an aircraft…but also not surprised, and at least they did buff the weapons. The classic tanks getting a 5++ is nice, but I’m not sure yet if that actually makes them viable. Anti-tank guns are still real strong right now. I kinda wish we had better synergy with daemon engines instead, but that is mostly because I like the models more! Not sure about the Mutalith yet. I like the new powers, but I’m not sure if the powers alone are worth the cost. I think he still needs to get in melee and do some work. I’m curious, but unconvinced.

Yes, I agree with your conclusiona. My gut says this was a very reasonable codex but how do you even judge balance in a game with such a disparity in strength levels, what is to be the baseline? I do think there are a few options that seem too inefficient even without using them. The enlightened and many vehicles particularly.

@@zakpodo Oh yeah, the enlightened are complete trash. People keep saying, 'They are character snipers now!' No...no they aren't. If you run the math on a full squad of them against something nice and boring like a Primaris Captain with no buffs or relics, it turns out that have trouble getting more than one or two wounds through. I honestly hope this is a prelude to just removing them entirely in 10th edition! As for Vehicles: the 5++ is a very good buff, but in my opinion we can't quite get enough firepower out of them to make them great. The guns on the Predator, Vindicator, and Land Raider just aren't strong enough for the points, even with the increased durability. They are better than they were, but they are still not close to the level of the top-tier vehicles in the game. I think the all-las Predator compares better to a twin-las Relic Contemptor now, and has the advantage of not competing for an Elite slot. However, when I look at a fight between all-las predators and equal points in Las Ironstriders (even in their newer nerfed form), the Predators generally lose. If they had given us 'Inferno Lascannons' or something with D6 min 3, or D3 + 3, I think they would have seen some competitive use. For now it looks like packing in Rhinos as cheap, ablative wounds is the most efficient thing to do with our vehicles.

Probably a silly question answered in an FAQ somewhere. Is it possible to gain CP from all of the following sources in the SAME battle round? +1 CP from Cult of Duplicity relic: Perfidious Tome +1 CP from the Cabal Ritual: Echoes of the Warp +1 CP from the relic: Helm of the Demon's Eye Surely +4 CP over a battle round might be a bit much? Assuming you roll correctly of course.

In the Core 9th ed. rulebook there is a rule that states you can only gain ONE CP per turn, not including the one you get for being battleforged. So no, you have to choose one. Cabal ritual one is probly best since it doesnt cost CP to equip and you cant kill the bearer like with a relic, but it can be denied as its a psychic action.

@@joegroves2517 you can run them with summoning. Any chaos character can summon a demon with 3d6 or less power level during the movement phase. So its hard to get big boys like the magic chicken (rolling >14 on 3d6 is uncommon) but screamers should be pretty easy to portal in

baleful devolution is insane cast that on a unit of 10 skitari (for example), the AVERAG roll on 2d6 is a 7, with the Ksons +1 base, you are rolling an average of 8 dice, meaning you are likely to hit 2 6s (potentially a lot more if you get a good psychic roll) add on the extra d3 from the cabalistic ritual, and your sitting on an average of around 6-7 mortal wounds, nearly wiping a whole unit in a single cast same goes for tzeentch's firestorm a WC 9 with a factionwide +1 to cast is not that uncommon, 9d6 hitting on 5s means 3avg mortals, put the extra 1d3 on there and you are hitting 5 mortals on average on ANY target there a character within 18inches who you cant shoot? well, why not just insta kill him with a nice handy 5 mortals out of the psychic phase

for the 1damage staff, does the strategem change the attack to 1d3+1 on that one? or does it exclude relics? if it doesn't exclude and works for it... well you got a beat stick that can take out most things if it fails a couple saves lol

Pretty sure it doesn't work on relics. Sprues & Brews had a flip through of the book showing pretty much everything and I'm confident I saw it there.

I’m actually really surprised they didn’t do the limitation for Exalted Sorcerers, so you think that will be included in the post release FAQ/Errata or was that intentional?

I expected them to limit the exalted sorcerers as well, but I don't think they really have enough other HQ choices if you were to limit them. Maybe if they were like Space Marine Captains and had like 7+ different datasheets for them.

In a vacuum lots of things here look nice - but in every youtube battle report so far using this codex the 1000 sons has lost - and that despite almost getting free points from their secondary objective. And I think the problem is that the codex is forcing Herohammer on the players, spending too many points on sorcerers and Icons of Flame. Such army that is not souped will run into a roadblock every time they run into armies that can counter magic and/or is good at killing characters. I can imagine though that it will curbstomp Tau (as if that was needed).

Yeah, there are a lot of shiny toys pushing you to be really stacked with hqs. Still have to keep the mission in mind. I wonder if those youtube batreps are choosing those builds to show off the new stuff, rather than what scores the most. My gut says this codex is pretty reasonable balance wise- a few things seem off, or underpowered. Still, it's hard to even know what the baseline is when there is such a power disparity across.the different codexes, and even within each codex units are pointed wildly inconsistently.

Another common thing in those battlereports is that the opponents make sure that they are not spreading out the causalties they are inflicting on the 1000 sons units, but focus on wiping out one unit at the time a before moving to the next target. That is easier now with the smaller unit size and the way the codex is rewarding 5 man units to maximize the number of icons and firepower. And they have every reason to do so, just because of the firepower a 5 man unit can have, to get its champion and the icon + it ignores the buff that Rubrics got that they always pass morale test + it counters that 1000 sons now have more ways to heal units - you can´t heal the dead.

I see a big problem though. Mere servants. The biggest problem right now when building a TS army is getting rubrics. The base box costs 30 whooping bucks minimum, the starter collecting only brings 10 of them and you can't even split them in two units of five because of the sorcerer and the heavy weapon models, and the newest two boxes don't even have rubrics on them. So now you are FORCED to buy more rubrics but you don't get an economic way to do so, all the other forces are useless to you without them but they are forced on you regardless in all the big packs, and on top of that you loose ALL other ways to build your army because of the minimum requirements of detachments. Not only that but even as a support army they are worse now because now you NEED to add rubrics to fill the minimum of troops required per detachments, you can't just add some cultists and whatever else you want to build, now you have to add a minimum of 100 points in rubrics. Those extra 50 points can REALLY make a difference on an army composition list even if it doesn't look like it. Ultimately the rest of the changes sound awesome but I despise predatory behavior like this, I'm not a bloody cow and I won't let anyone milk me.

I could be completely wrong with this, but Scarabs are included in that maximum no? Meaning as long as you don't go over the total amount of Scarab Terms and Rubrics, you're A-Ok? e.i. 10 rubrics, 5 terms allow for 15 cultist and 15 Tzaangor?

@@bryal7811 Now that you mention it I don't know, I thought cultists and tzaangors would bench each other out of the cap as well but maybe not? Regardless my problem it's not as much with that but with the fact that you HAVE to buy rubrics(and or scarabs) but you don't get any other way than to pay shitloads of money. There is an artificial scarcity created on purpose there and I am not buying into it is what I mean.

@@Arantonak Already did something like that, but now proxies are banned from official tournaments, so I don't even know if I can use them even... Thing is, I'm tired of all these headaches and loops just to build an army that I like. On top of that if I'm out out legal tournaments even if all my models come 100% from GW then I'm not going to bother with them anymore right of the bat, I'll maybe just 3d print all of my stuff, add whatever I want, kitbash without limitations and and be done with all these headaches.

i dunno, it'll be hard for me to give up CSM what with lord discordant, raptors, bikes, havocs etc, never mind Daemons of Tzeentch (i use all 3 in a chaos supe) I really dont think the secondary's outweigh the lord discordant's ability to whup some serious ass. Although the 5+ save is sweet. Toss that onto a Laser Destroyer Vindicator and its gunna get nasty!

So Ive been reading the codex and from what I get so far (correct me if I'm wrong) when upgrading your exalted sorcerer could you also upgrade ahriman with the rehati option from legion command? Since ahriman has the exalted sorcerer keyword. Can't find the restriction for him on that upgrade.

The only restriction with the conniving plate is ARCANA ASTARTES which the daemon prince has. Useful relic for a melee prince for sure

the tzaangor fatecaster bow has an unmodified hit roll of 2+ is always a success not an unmodified wound roll. the vortex beast also went up to 5 attacks base while losing hateful assault, but it's attack profile no longer degrades.

I think Pack from beyond would work with smite how ever it'll be the lowest Warpcharge so example 5 to cast smite it'll only be D3 MW and not D6MW otherwise i think that would be a little to op. because you spend another 4 pts to do another D3 MW ontop of a D6 MW witch could be a potential 9 MW to any single target. since it says lowest warpcharge that would mean you'd only get the D3 unless you're magnus ofc witch would net you a D6. but then would you want to use it since you could get more than 11 then it'll be 2D6 then spend 4 points to do another D3 MW witch adds up to a potential 27 MW damn. either way something is dieing from Magnus smite lmao.

Our characters can pick from either discipline. Not just select a discipline. Both warped regeneration and heal spell mention only healing a model once. No restrictions in codex about revives though making healing magnus less effecient.
