I worked for USFWS and unless something changed from last year you can stay at a National Wildlife Refuge for 6months out of the year as long as you agree to volunteer some time at the refuge. You get free water and electric hookups and no rent for your spot catch is you have to reserve your spot at each refuge. Their are over 200 refuges across the country. Your welcome!!!!

jeffrey england ....Im sorry, sir, but you do not speak for me...I feel it is unprofessional, and also would prefer they record during her nap time...Ive spent my entire life, putting other’s comfort level before my own, and Im sick of putting my needs last... Venus ( my birth moon ruler ) needs peace, zero drama... My #1 pet peeve, when my daughter was in high school was that she NEVER wanted attention, unless I was on the phone, or visitors were there, she would interrupt, insert herself... It is rude... This video is very stressful, because of content... You are free to not mind the child’s interruption, but I would unsubscribe if it happens again.. In closing, do not speak for me, speak for yourself only.. I would never let you control my thoughts, or opinions, and you, of course have no right to do so.. Im SO sick of folks who assume. ( oh, Kate probably wont mind. ). News Flash ! Kate does mind...

According to my Math your payback is about 300 nights or less than a year. After that it only costs the annual fee. Great for full timers, not so good for part timers that could stretch the payback out to 4-5 years depending on the nights out. I have looked at several broadcasts and you guys have done the best job by far.Thanks for your effort.

@@RVOddCouple Am I missing something, the break even is the cost - residual value. For example $8,000 (est initial cost) - $4,500 (est residual value) = $3,500 (3 year ROI =~$1,200/yr) + annual fee ($700?) = $1,900/ avg cost per day value ($70) or 27 days per year over 3 years. Stretch that to 5 years and it's $3,500/5 year ROI = $700+$700 = $1,400 / $70 = 20 days/ year and so on. Of course the average cost per day can fluctuate, however, it's not purely for full timers. It all depends on if you are going to leverage it in the short term or long term. I see it as it pays for it self in 1 VRBO vacation home rental for my family and I. With free "quick hitter" 2/3/4 day weekends where availability exists at near campgrounds during the rest of the local season.

Thank you RV Odd Couple for all the information. It is a lot to process, but certainly not nearly as much time as went into making the information available. Only took 2.5 hours to get thru the 32 min video with stop and go and repeat to write everything down. Retiring in 165 days, selling my home and going full-time RVing. I'm only 12 months behind getting the information - so need a lot of education. Like your format of telling the "real story". Know it not all sunshine and roses :-) Keep up the great work. Looking forward to your truck information. Thank you - Charlie

Happy that we can help! Please call Jim & Brandy if you have any questions. They are great people who we call our Friends. They know everything there is to know about these Memberships & more importantly they are honest. Please don't purchase through the call center like we did. These are sales people who don't live this lifestyle and mislead us in a number of ways. A TT Membership is a no-brainer if you are going to full time RV but make sure that the person who sells it to you is honest and has your interest in heart. Looking back and knowing what we know now, we may have considered a used Membership. Let us know if there is anything else that we can help you with Charlie. Thank you

Great video! Covered the topic well and made it easier to understand. As a mechanic myself and understanding RV systems pretty well, I can tell you that you can save yourself the $5 extra charge per night for 50 amp service by getting an adapter and connecting your RV to the 30 amp receptacle at the RV Park. The only true downfall of that is you cannot run both air conditioners. You will find that even running a single air conditioner on 30 amp will require some creative electrical conservation. Basically you have a few electrically High draw items that's built into your RV. 1 - the rooftop air conditioner. 2 - the hot water tank electrical heating element. 3 - the refrigerator while running on electric. 4 - the microwave. And of course anything that you plug into any of the outlets is usually okay except for, 1 - small electrical space heater. 2 - curling iron or flat iron for hair. 3 - blow dryer oh, that's a big one. 4 - toaster, toaster oven, heat induction cooker. So basically on 30 amp service you can run any two of those items safely and you may even be able to get away with three of those items but what we do is if we're running the air conditioner on 30 amps and we know the refrigerator could possibly cycle and turn on the compressor we would either turn off the refrigerator or turn off the AC unit one or the other, before we would run the microwave however it seems that we could get away with the air conditioning on, the refrigerator running, and the hot water tank heating element without any issue. You will have to experiment with your rig to see what you might be able to get away with. The other thing that is relatively nice as most of all the lights inside the RV and the rooftop fans all run on 12v battery power so they're not affected so much by how much amperage you're connected to so you can safely run all those things. Again you'll have to experiment. I hope that wasn't too confusing maybe I'll have to shoot a video on this at some point. Thanks again for your explanation on the Thousand Trails.

Great review of TT and great explanation of the 30AMP dance required to not trip the breaker at the power pedestal. One thing which can help with the limited 30AMP service is to run an additional 20AMP extension cord (make sure it is rated for outdoor 20AMP) from the power pedestal (pedestals usually have a 20AMP, 30AMP, and sometimes 50AMP outlets). Using this 20AMP service an electrician can add additional outlets isolated from the rest of your electrical system and you can run a high draw appliances like a space heater/induction cooktop/instapot. Keep in mind that 20AMP + 30AMP does indeed add to 50AMPs but 50AMP service at the pedestal is actually 100AMPs of service (two isolated legs of 50AMP 120V service).

Every single contract is different -- but with the new Elite, Elite Connections, Odyssey, and Ultimate Odyssey they've aligned the offerings (purposefully to get rid of all the confusion with all the one-off specialty contracts)... so if there are any changes between the contracts it would be extremely minor (the contracts are off-the-shelf cookie-cutter). With the additional weeks, as you stated, you can extend your stay an extra week for $29 twice a year. But, with Odyssey and Ultimate Odyssey you get a 4th week extension twice a year for $29, but you can also extend to a 5th week twice a year during high season at a park with restrictions for just $69 per additional week. Another thing to mention are the bonus parks: when you upgrade to Elite you get five (5) Encore parks added to your plan. Unlike The Trails Collection, these "bonus parks" are treated exactly as if they were Thousand Trails parks to you -- meaning you get three weeks at a time and can go park-to-park. With Elite Connections you also get elevent (11) more "bonus parks." With Ultimate Odyssey you get an additional nine (9) Encore parks as "bonus parks" on top of all that. Aside from the advance reservations, cabin weeks and getaway cabin weeks... the Bonus Parks are one of the biggest perks for us. A note about Zone passes. The best thing is to wait until they have a Buy One Get One Free zone offer (which they run all the time, or you can just ask for it and maybe they'll give it to you when you ask). Get the two zones you think you'll use AND -- not everyone knows this part -- you're allowed to SWITCH ZONES during the season once. So, unless you're hopping between zones, you can pretty much get two zones... and then switch to two different zones later in the year as you move across the states.

Terrific video! We only travel 6 months of the year and go everywhere, so this is likely not for us but love finally having some questions answered, since some of our friends have memberships but can't seem to explain it very well! If we were younger, I can definitely see the value in memberships such as this. As retirees, we have found volunteering/work camping a great way to cut expenses and still travel. One thing that would have helped me in overall understanding would be a matrix that compares each subscription level by amenities. (I can do that by looking at the overheads again, but a summary is what my brain was wanting as I tried to put it all together). Great job. Am going to share this with our camping club -- we get a lot of newer folks asking about the different memberships.
@RVOddCouple
@RVOddCouple 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment Brenda. I understand what you mean. To have all of the differences in a single page. We found that it was difficult to get that in the video because the writing ended up being tiny. We opted to highlight each amenity by subscription level instead of creating a matrix for legibility. But we're glad this was helpful. And you're right. There are many ways to cut costs on camping. Work camping is a great way to do so!

First off, thank you so much for doing this. This was the best explanation and I understood it all the way through. I guess the only thing I did not understand why don't people factor in the cost of the membership over a certain number of years as part of the cost per stay? People keep saying they are staying for free, but that is never actually true. They do actually cost you something, as you showed. You paid roughly $8k + $460/ yr for your first 4 years which is $9840. You stayed about 90 days in your first 6 months, so that is 180 days a year at TT. Over 4 years that is 720 nights. To calculate your payoff in the first 4 years, TT stays would have cost you $13.67/night without the incidentals or $17.55/night with your incidentals added in. Then after your first 4 years, it would be about $6.44/night if the maintenance fee does not go up. This also means you will need to stay near where these locations are, to be fairly consistent. As a fulltime RVr, free nights are boondocking. I think the way you did your break down at the end is the better picture of what it cost you and it was very much appreciated. We can't thank you enough for this. I still don't know if this is worth it for us as we are still enjoying the traveling of the entire country. It seems like it is worth it if you spend most of your time on the East Coast and the Gulf where there are fewer places to stay for free. Yet, in the West, there are many options. This is a tough one. A new friend here from BluWave Odyssey mentioning you on their live stream.

Great info and very clear explanations. We decided to purchase direct from TT because ALL 81 TT parks are now treated the same, for us that means 120 day reservation window. RPI is the most frustrating part of the membership package. They sell it based on a $10-15 per night cost but I have found most of their parks are Enjoy America parks which give you 50% off. But, we are finding some parks that will not allow RPI reservations more than 1 month out - pretty frustrating. We are planning to spend 139 nights in 2019 in TT/TC parks. Looking at the rack rate for these parks, we will be saving about 90% of our initial investment this year alone. We couldn't pass it up. The real clincher was there were 2 parks in New England we planned to stay in for a total of 35 days. Rack rate brought the costs for those 2 parks alone was about $2800 making TT an easy decision.

Thank you Roger! This is fantastic information! We went purchased direct from tt too because the membership was immediate and we didn't want to mess with restrictions. Love how you did the math regarding to figure your savings. We haven't used RPI much but we appreciate that it fills in the holes. It's similar to a time share in that it is only beneficial if you use it! Thank you again!

All the math looks great on your expenses, except the one about staying in the TT/Encore System. $602 divided by 91 nights equals $6.62 per night, instead of the $3.88 listed on the slide at 27:04. I do agree with so many others who said this is the best video they have seen on the TT/Encore system. We too are selling all to go on the road full time, but are getting a much later start than many we are subbed to on KZbin. You are among the many. Thank you for letting us follow along. I was just considering Thousand Trails and getting ready to research it and that was your next video on my KZbin channel 😁 I am a Veteran and have access to all of the Morale, Welfare and Recreational services. @@RVOddCouple definitely love to meet you guys and tell my story just over the past few days since I discovered your channel. Wish you had a radio channel I miss the company when I'm away from home😁 What really got my attention was your video about not being able to call 911! I had an almost exact or at least a very similar experience the first time I bondocked at Walmart. I thought this would be a good test run being in rural Minnesota and in a big empty parking lot, and parker at the far end where the delivery trucks come and go so I could park curbside and extend my slide so I could get into my bedroom without offending for annoying anyone. I actually did a test run of the test run earlier in the day. I went over and set up had a nice lunch with my German Shepherd service dog, Max. We had our spot all picked out for the night.. what could go wrong? 😁 I realized where we parked was adjacent to the delivery entrance to the store so we would probably get a little bit of noise from trucks coming and going. When we set up we only unhooked the seven pin connector from the truck and lowered the electric tongue jack on a travel trailer for a little bit of stability. All was well until approximately 3 a.m. when I heard a loud diesel engine but being so close to the delivery entrance I thought it would pass. Well it didn't. It pulled up directly behind my camper, a place he didn't have to be with virtually an empty parking lot! He must have sat there idling and revving his engine for about 15 minutes. At which time I got my partner' Smith & Wesson ready and the dog at the door. Unfortunately I had made no other plans but I did have cell service so I called the sheriff immediately after the second truck pulled up to my exit door. The two drivers started arguing and yelling at each other in some south-of-the-border language. I did not confront them but we were ready to if need be. The one driver got in the other truck by my door and they took off. Sheriff finally arrived walked around my regular looking for damaged didn't find any so he left and said if you have any more problems just give us a call 😲 Seriously, I was so pumped up I wasn't ready to go back to bed especially in that location. All I had to do was plug the camper into my truck, raise the stairs and tongue jack, and secure the door. We were on our way to a nearby casino who allowed us to park until the campground opened. Woo!!!

Hi Arehn - we are TT members of 4 years and we have definitely been turned away recently from full Parks. When we first joined in 2015, the only time I remember a Park being full was for a holiday weekend in high season (summer where we were looking). This summer we’ve discovered that we couldn’t get a site close to the date when we were planning on camping. We were definitely not offered a spot in the parking lot! Be sure to check the contract you are considering signing, because, as Mercedes and John have mentioned, if it isn’t in the contract, it isn’t going to happen. Good luck to you, and happy camping!

Thanks for info. My only comment is that to really under stand daily cost to stay at a thousand trails campsite you have to amortize the cost of your initial membership ( say over 5 years) as well as the yearly fee. That will give you a much more accurate daily cost estimate.

Thanks for the time and effort on producing this video. We have been debating on making this investment for several months now. I have 2 concerns from your video. First, if they present something in a sales pitch but change it in the wording of the contract that is wrong and per my AG buddy illegal. It would be like buying a car and they tell you it has air conditioning but the papers you sign does not include the a/c so they remove it from the car. Its bait and switch. Second concern, is there a limit on what these campgrounds can charge for their services IE 50 amp? I spoke to a park owner in Washington and he says they all are going to start charging for many more things and he says there is no limit. He said to enjoy your $5 a day 50 amp service while you can because these sites are going to go up! As fees increase your membership value decreases, i hope TT has a cap on the fees their parks can charge for services. Thanks again for all you three do!
@RVOddCouple

We love our TT membership but there are definitely risks that we have considered. Always Read Your Contract! What they say does not matter. You raise interesting possible issues but that comes with the membership. We are averaging about $10 per day when we stay at TT and this includes the few Parks that have had an additional charge for 50 amp (3 so far) You are very welcome.

When you purchased your thousand trails elite connection membership did you upgrade from a camping pass? I was told that all of the upper tier programs are upgrades to the camping pass and that you cannot buy an upper tier without first purchasing a camping pass and then having it upgraded to the tier wish to purchase. I could see that as a way to reduce the number of resales in the future. The way it stands now, when you have a membership you can sell it one time and have all of the rights and privileges transfer with it. The second sale reverts back to the original product that you purchased. If they are forcing us to purchase the camping pass and then have it upgraded, all the rights and privileges would not be able to be passed along after the first sale.

Fascinating listening and watching you. I love hearing about your experiences. I do not expect to live your lifestyle having made the decision to retire to Spain from the UK instead. If though, I was to try your adventures, I would definitely do so following your advice. I can understand totally why your subscription list has grown so quickly, and, continues to grow. The time and trouble you take in passing on your knowledge is inspirational. Good luck to you both with your endeavours in the future. Your daughter is a very lucky young lady. Kind Regards, Alison UK. X

Great video. FYI. There are very view sites with sewer hook up. You also cannot reserve spaces. It is first come first serve. If you are staying for a long period of time just know you will most likely be hooking up to dump.

We've only run into one park with that issue but we're learning that as we go up to Oregon, we're about to find more. It will be interesting. Poor John! :-)

Thank you for all your videos. Funny... we actually made it all the way through the divorce....... and are now are dating 😂. I found that story with you guys so great. Anyway, we are looking into becoming part time RV’ers. So strange how I could really relate to your situation. I’ve been watching all kinds of these videos just to learn and understand things before we take the leap. I love how honest you both are and I really appreciate it. Thank you so much. I look forward to learning more from your family. Happy Glamping!
