Almost sounds like he has ocd of having to clarify himself and his thoughts several times and I truly feel empathetic towards this guy because I have this problem as well. The thought that you have to correct every mis-understanding is difficult to live with. Maybe I am wrong and biased. Ryan Gosling wow what a humble human being and all the other actors as well. Duvall owned that room. Watching these young up-and-comers perched next to the guy who acted alongside Gregory Peck, Pacino, Brando, Tommy Lee Jones, and DeNiro in the movies that made them icons is the ultimate in juxtaposing wisdom vs. youth (Firth being the exception, being that he's been around for years). The moment he starts name-dropping, the rest of the room became mere conversational shadow. It's cool seeing the young guys like Gosling/Franco/Eisenberg take in what Duvall is saying. Duvall's worked with nearly everyone in the last three generations of film. Just an incredible array of filmography.

41:54 "The great Stanley Kubrick was an actor's enemy." I've always wondered about that. Kubrick does so many takes but aside from Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange, I don't often hear about the performances. I doubt, even decades from now, that anybody will talk about Kidman and Cruise's performances in Eyes Wide Shut. They'll talk about other things. Here's a quote from Michael Herr, who helped write Full Metal Jacket: "Nor could I explain that strange irresistible requirement he had for pushing his actors as far beyond a “naturalistic” style as he could get them to go, and often selecting their most extreme, awkward, emotionally confusing work for his final cut. The peculiarity of it: George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove, Patrick Magee in A Clockwork Orange, and Jack Nicholson in The Shining, just to pick the most blinding examples; Scott complained publicly that Stanley not only directed him way over the top but also chose the most overwrought takes for the final cut, while Nicholson’s performance turned The Shining into a movie that largely failed as a genre piece but worked unforgettably on levels where it didn’t matter that there was a huge movie star and great actor on the premises or not. (Nicholson did some of his greatest work, and his very worst, in The Shining, and the same could be said of the director.) “That was much more real,” Stanley told him after a take, “but it isn’t interesting.” Even the biggest stars knew what it was like to be a pawn in Stanley’s game: “That was really great. Let’s go again.”"

Fact: Ryan Gosling gave the jacket he is wearing here to Conan O'Brien
@thebigfootking10 жыл бұрын
Any idea what make the jacket was?
@chadross175010 жыл бұрын
You sure it's the drive jacket?
@Dream1ng10 жыл бұрын
Chad Ross I never said it was the drive jacket. The jacket he's wearing here was not worn in the film, but the costume department made him it.
@chadross175010 жыл бұрын
Dream1ng no but the jacket he gave Coco was a brown version of the drive jacket with the scorpion on the back. Not from the film directly but still Drive paraphernalia.

What Duvall is saying about Kubrick...WOW.
@eduardomantaras6486 жыл бұрын
Kubrick seguramente sea el mejor cineasta de la historia, pero era famoso por lo obsesivo de su trabajo y de maltratar a algunos actores, como a Shelley Duvall en The Shining

I would not know what to do with Robert Duvall. He's so stern.
@DonVal864 жыл бұрын
It’s been my experience that men that stern respect honesty and directness.
