Është e vërtetë që fjala shesh përdoret në dy kuptime. Sigurisht më parë kur Shqipëria nuk kishte qytete të mëdha si Tirana fjala shesh përdorej për një vend të madh të sheshtë😁 që mund të ishte mbi një kodër apo diku tjetër dhe që shërbente si pikë takimi midis njerëzve ku ata bisedonin dhe qëndronin së bashku. Nice to hear you speaking Arbëreshe. I am Albanian so hearing those albanian words that you inherited from one generation to another gives me a special undescribed feeling.

Other than a podcast I'd love to see Martin do a travel vlog of him going to albanophone areas and speak with the locals and see what traditions they share and how their language has progressed. Martin seems like such a likeable fellow I think everyone would love to chat with him. It's something that's been done in the past with Arvanites in Greece but with Martin it would be very interesting to see how they could communicate with each other.

It seems to me that a lot of the word used in Arbërësh are still in used in Albanian Standard Language just not as often. Like Shesh is used for square and Sheshtë for flat the ë is usually not pronounced, not exactly the same, but very close. Live most Albanians will use jetoj but rroj is still in the standard as well (rron) and is still used in some occasions , rrofsh njëqind vjet may you live one hundred years

well true and not true,we get confused between Albanian and the words that have been added to our languege,we say kiatsa in deed but it comes from the italian,so sheshi is the correct one ,I dont know if we used to have any other word for it

Kjaca comes from Sicilian rather than Italian. Sheshi is not the correct word because it means plateau - pianura - not square.

@@APreka-ch3bb it isn’t important whether a word comes from a dialect or a language. As you may know, most people don’t agree with this classification. The important thing is that the word sheshi has changed its meaning over the centuries in this particular region. We can’t go against language evolution. If we start eliminating words from a language because of their origin, we would hardly speak any.

Çertu=Certo= Qartë. The word even in Sicilian or Italian is not Latin but Messapic. I think so because Qartë= Q'artë= to see goldly/clear and Qar't= tearly. Meaning to see clear as gold or tear. I have noticed many Latin words than in Albanian has a definition of etymology. Like Tesoro, in Albanian is Thesar= Thes+ ar= Sack of gold. Where in Albanian is compound word.

@ The AR=Gold is still same. Maybe Vist in Albanian is Vishtë= to put on/to dress. Like Vistar= Dressed with gold. Gold cloths were common amongs Arbëror, documented by many westerners at the time. Probably Arbëresh kept it as Aristocrats moved with their tribes first. Kiartë/Kjartë= in gegh

Seemingly from Italian chiaro.[1] However, due to the existence of dialectal klartë and kjartë, a loan from Latin clarus seems more probable.[2] The word qartë itself is a loan to Albanian don't speak about etmyologies unless you do some research.

Bashkia comes from the Albanian word bashke, which means unity/together, used in administration for a regional jurisdiction. It most likely derives from Latin fasciculum/fasce. In Romanian there is gasca, which means clique, cabal. Basically your townhall is named facism. LOL

Etymology. From Proto-Albanian *baskā, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰask- (“bundle”). Cognate to Ancient Greek φάσκωλος (pháskōlos, “leathern bag, sack”), Ancient Macedonian βάσκιοι (báskioi, “fasces, bundle”), Latin fascis (“band, bundle”), Middle Irish basc (“collar, neck chain”).

Why not? Arberesh is a form of Albanian with added Sicilian words they have to learn pure Albanian because they’re Albanian. It doesn’t matter if they’re Albanians 600 years ago Albanians are Albanians even 2000 years ago let alone 600 years ago

@@eddiexu77 Because they will lose the originality of that archaic Albanian spoken. What should be done is all that archaic language should be written down and protected. If they want to learn the standard, they con learn it, but without messing the Arbresh one. I think the same about the Gheg and Tosk dialects and sub-dialects we have, should all be collected and taught the same way as the standard.

@@eddiexu77 I hope he's not, but if he does that's not good. Actually the only language that is not widely spoken in Albania is Turkish, even if there are some adopted words as it's normal in all places they ruled over. Actually it's amazing how with everything Ottomans did to not allow us to learn our language, we resisted and prevailed to save our language with all its dialects and subdialects. Yes, Arberesh and Albanian in its core are the same. If we hear our grandparents or go in the deep regions of south Albania the way they express themselves is very close, since they tend to not speak the standard Albanian, but the regional old Albanian language.

The idea of seperating Arberesh from Albanian is so strange .linguistically even me as a Diaspora Gheg-Albanian speaker I have nearly no difficulties in understanding Arberesh and also Arvanitika. One issue stems from Arberesh not being used to the standard Albanian phonetics and phonologics (which of course is due to lack of interaction with Albanians and Kosovo-Albanians). Socio-culturally speaking i think some Arberesh/Arvanites have internalized albanophobia/xenophobia because of the Albanian stereotypes they have been seeing in Italy and Greece. Therefore a generational shift of identity might happen due to lack of contact of your original culture and language. All in all let's keep it simple Albanian is the language with its several sub-dialects including Arberesh and Arvantika. there is nothing to seperate, most dialects have varrying lexems of other contact-languages

I think Arbëresh should replace the latin words. Modern Arbëresh is now mixed and if continue so it will be lost. We have to keep in mind that the Arbëresh went in Italy and didn't know Italian (dialects) at all. Just Albanian. So the words that are now lost, is better to replace with Albanian. Like Bashkia= is a modern term in Albanian but still is Albanian. Bashkë= Together and Bashkësi= Multiciple. Or Sheshi= Square/Piazza
