@FaerieGoatmother8 күн бұрын
Oh ♥, a taker.. @@smote_his_ruin, if we are listening to metal for anything of musicianship, the contention barely applies. Reinkaos is not an exceptional album in its musical niche. That is a valid enough reason to enjoy heavy metal, I suppose. We all come from different places. And there are a lot of times when I'll think, "I did NOT even hear that the same as Nick and the Thralls.." But they are themselves musicians. I know they're listening for elements that fly right under my radar. Now let's turn to Slayer for a minute. People kvetch about Stain of Mind for being nü tinged. Which is the *wrong* approach. With Stain, and moreso Love to Hate (which nobody ever even mentions - are you guys listening to that album past track three?) Slayer legitimizes jump riffs. It's not the jumpdafuckup that sucks, it's the whole mall ready packaging that perfectly good jump riffs are being wasted on. So what makes Reinkaos THE mandatory melodeath is that, even for crusty punks like yours truly, someone who we all know is ‐ was- one of the real and dedicated has sanctioned the genre. We are all now free to take seriously such things as Dark Tranquility or .. or .. well, I don't keep track of who knows their scales and modes. But we are certainly in a better place to understand why cats like Nick even bother with an Inflames. Without Jon, or someone equally TF off the rails, bestowing a blessing, a lot of us would be forced to assume they're just here cos Dream Theater have those haircuts. I'm still working on figuring out the metalcore angle. I don't THINK Nick -or apparently even Jon- is a whole lot younger than me. Not sure how they didn't know to write all that stuff off immediately.

Excellent review of this band. I first heard Dissection on a Blackend: The Black Metal Compilation Volume 2. The song of course was 'Unhallowed'. It blew me away with it's complicated riffs and that awesome soaring guitar solo in the middle. I agree Jon was POS for murdering that gay man, and I'm not a fan of the whole satanist thing. Although Dissection wrote quite a lot of incredible songs, I prefer bands that didn't have any part in murders or church burnings such as Immortal, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir, Mactatus, Old Man's Child, Darkthrone, Enslaved, Moonspell, Mercyful Fate, Bathory etc. I also subbed you.

I have no problem with people believing what they want but when those beliefs come at the expense of others it becomes toxic and in some cases very dangerous. I do like some bands with questionable pasts but while I might appreciate the music, I don't hold back on how I feel about the musicians as people.

Awesome retrospective on one of the greatest metal bands of all time, Dissection. Yes, Jon Nödtveidt was a controversial and troubled individual which is unfortunately common in black metal; but if you could look past that he was a highly talented songwriter and guitarist. Dissection was one of the leading bands that combined the accessibility of melodic death metal with the bleakness and harshness of black metal. Reinkaos was a disappointment minus a few songs. However, Storm of the Light’s Bane was a 10/10 masterpiece that I can listen to constantly and the Somberlain was an incredible debut. Truly a legendary band for their 90’s albums.

Yeah, after the magnum opus that is Storm of the Light's Bane that's pretty much where I stop... outside of the random times I try to come back to Reinkaos and find something redeemable about it lol.
@TheStrappingOldGrumpyLad11 күн бұрын
Here's two stories related to Dissection! I was in Gothenburg last year to see Sabbat and me and my friend arrived a day early and out of boredom and to make time go by we went to the Keillers Park, just to look around there. It is a very large park and quite outside the city center and a nice looking one too but at the same time eerie to be there considering what happened there. After some hours walking around there we found the spot where it happened and I can tell you it's the perfect place for a murder especially with the amount of trees and how secluded it is around. And my second story is. There was this one time I was at the pub and I had my Somberlain hoodie on me and some guy came up to me and started talking to me. And long story short we got talking and it ends with him calling me a stupid poser for not being a satanist and not supporting what Jon and Vlad did. I just laughed at him and finished my beer and walked away and came home safely.
@thrallsofmetal10 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I've been to Civil War battlefields and old prisons and there's something about the atmosphere where you know people have died. That's wild you found that spot in the park it happened. I can imagine they don't put that in the tour guide for the part lol. It still blows my mind that there are fans of this band that take the whole Satanist angle seriously and worse yet condoning what those 2 did just for the sake of being "kvlt" and "trve". That's just dumb. I'm glad dude wasn't such a fan that he tried to hurt you or anything.

Awesome show. My rankings are: - The Somberlain - 3 1/2 - great riffs but the structure and the quality of the writing weren't quite there. Favorite track is In The Cold Winds of Nowhere. - Storm of the Light's Bane - 5 - Night's Blood is an amazing opening track. Where Dead Angels Lie is so evil and awesome. Thorns of Crimson Death is the For Whom The Bell Tolls of black metal. If you need a bridge to get from thrash metal to melodic black metal this is the fucking Golden Gate. - Reinkaos - 2 - The awesome riffs and leads are gone. It does get boring so fast. It's adequate background music I guess. Did AI somehow generate this album and send it 19 years into the past?

Best black metal band ever in my opinion. The Somberlain and Storm of the Light’s Bane is some of the best the genre has to offer. I barely listen to black metal anymore but Dissection is one of the few bands that still blows my mind
@thrallsofmetal14 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- One of my favorites for sure. Those first 2 albums are still my gold standard when it comes down to melodic black metal. I still listen to a fair amount of black metal but I'm picky about it and those first 2 Dissection albums might be partially why. I love my black metal riffy as hell and few bands did that better than Dissection.
@ghastlymagician333615 күн бұрын
First off, if you actually go digging into the history of the area and all that (not explaning it here), it actually gives good insight as to why so much evil stuff comes out of Scandinavia, doesnt redeem all the bad stuff that goes on, but it at least gives perspective. Ill be straight, i always listen to metal music, but i didnt really start digging into the more extreme stuff until the last 7 or so years, so there is a great deal i havent heard or experiences yet (which im working on), also Jon Nodtveidt was an extraordinary piece of work, and i always felt wrong giving his music a spin, just felt wrong. But I did give the first album a spin, and i will work on doing the second, but it really was excellent as much as i hate to say it. When Black Metal expands its boundries and gets really riffy, and mixes in folk flavors, and orchestral elements to go with the tremelo picking and abrasive vocals, it really is something special.
@thrallsofmetal14 күн бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, if you dig into the history of almost any country you'll find some really dark shit. Certainly plenty of it here in the US as well. Even after the decades of listening to more extreme stuff I've had there's still a ton I haven't heard either so don't even worry about that. We all go at our own pace. Jon was a brilliant musician and I believe may be considered a prodigy as well. He really had massive talent starting at a young age and put his own stamp on black metal with those first 2 albums. It sucks his legacy is so mired in controversy but dude was kind of a piece shit outside of the music.

Early ATG was borderline Black metal as well, guess in particular his vocals were more crust but those first two Red in the Sky and With Fear definitely fit more with Black metal than Death.

Necrotic Nick- Arguably. I'd say the Gardens of Grief demo is almost purely death metal and not necessarily melodeath but The Red in the Sky is Ours does have some blackened vibes as well as With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness so you might be album to argue it's a bit on the blackened death metal side.

The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bane are definite classics in their own right. Dissection have pioneered a genre. I'm in the minority here, but I loved Reinkaos for what it was. No, it's not The Somberlain. No, it's not Storm of the Light's Bane. Yes, it has some unique lyrical content and some traditional rock/metal tropes. However, I appreciate it for what it is. I try to keep an open mind when veteran bands experiment with other genres or different songwriting. Sometimes, it works. Something, it's a total stinker (yes, I'm looking at you Lulu and Cold Lake). But, I understand this album isn't shared by the overall populace and is a bit controversial for its sound and its content. It's a radical change, but I welcomed it. I think Watain picked up perfectly where Dissection really left off at Storm of the Light's Bane, specially on Sworn to the Dark in 2007.

Ooo, I'm hyped for this! SoTLB is a fantastic masterpiece, but The Somberlain is sometimes overshadowed by it, while having just as great highlights (I actually come back to it more often than Storm)! Melodic black metal masters who's career not only was short-lived, but created 3 killer albums that are a foundational act in extreme music history. I will say The Somberlain out of the three albums is my personal favorite because of how raw, unfiltered, chaotic, Melodic and almost death metal styled sounding that album was going for and course Storm The Lights Bane is a masterpiece, brilliant songwriting, amazing arrangements, lurky atmospheric passages and the song Soulreaper is a perfect representation that black metal doesn't need to be satanic and blasphemous, but a beautifully crafted portrait to understand the band's imagery and detail. Can't wait to see this retrospective review on a band that meant alot to the melodic black/ death metal scene that other bands like Thulcandra, Old Mans Child, Unanimated, UADA, and many more following Dissection's footsteps should be loud and proud.
