except they're not. They get owned in the only big fight they have (and they're the only good guys to get into a one sided slaughter), wouldn't have left their woods if they knew goblins were on their way during the events of the Hobbit and they're so weak by the point of LOTR that they can't go help the neighboring realms during the siege of the north. They're also not as advanced as the other elven kingdoms (but are presumably less primitive than the avari if any remain). Out of all the elves, they're the most pathetic of them all.

His hatred towards the Dwarves rooted from the sack of Menegroth where Thingol and other Sindarin elves were killed by the Dwarves of Nogrod. With Cirdan, Galadriel and Celeborn, he's one of the few remaining oldies who made it through the battles against Morgoth and Sauron pre-Dol Guldur. Of all the elves alive in the Fourth Age, only Galadriel had the worse tragic backstory. Lol

Galadriels back story - everyone died
@FlyDinosaur16 күн бұрын
@@nemanjap8768And even though she didn't technically die (I think), Galadriel also lost her daughter. Elrond's wife and her entourage were attacked on the road and she got so messed up they packed her up and sent her back to Valinor. And that at least partially informs why Elrond is so afriad to lose his only daughter. Neat. (Fun fact: that means Elrond's kids have Elf, Human, and Maiar in them. What a mix, lol.) At least she has a reason not to be in the story. I still wonder what happened to Thranduil's wife. But meh.

I wish they had delved more into Thranduil's backstory in the movies gives a better understanding to why Thranduil is the way he is. He faced Sauron's Armies, he witnessed his father and 2/3rds of his people slaughtered, and watched as over the next 3,000 years, his once great kingdom fell to sickness and dark creatures, further and further into decline. Thranduil isn't just a snooty Elf King, looking down his nose at the Dwarves, he's... worried, paranoid even. He's seen so many tragedies and hardships hit his people, his kingdom is a shell of it's former glory, if one more great tragedy should hit, like himself and his army killed, and a wrathfull dragon attacks Mirkwood, there will be nothing left.
@Vmac139420 күн бұрын
Thranduil seems like an explanation of the notion that natural death is a gift from Eru to men. He's lived through thousands of years worth of traumatic events that you can never totally get over. Enough of that and there's just some sort of persistent weight upon the soul.

Not an excuse but I can see why he was so Adamant of not sending his people out to fight another war away. from home. He lost 2/3rds of his people against Sauron the first time and didnʻt want to go through that again. Elves from what I understand have a hard time reproducing because of their long lives so losing thousands of your people is devastating and would take literally 100s of years to rebuild.

A friend of mine had an fanfic idea about Thranduil's title of being the 'Elvenking'. He said that it was Lord Elrond of Rivendell that crowned/coronated Thranduil after the death of Gil-Gallad the last Highking of the Elves. And was witnessed by Lord Cirdan and Durin IV of Khazad-dum. Isildur wasn't there since he left with the Ring of Power. Lord Elrond knew that Thranduil and Isildur were good friends. That is why he decided to convince the other Lords of giving Thranduil the title of 'Elvenking'. Thranduil the 'Elvenking' was not swayed by Lord Elrond to go against Isildur and realizing that the campaign of 'Last Alliance' took too much of Everyone. Leading to the 'Angmar Conspiracy' involving Thranduil's wife (possibly an Avari Elf) and the Witch King's burial that requires a 'Powerful Spell/Curse'.

I don’t think there is! The kinslayings (killing of elves by elves) were very limited and specific and they were so important that they changed the course of elven history and the popular imagination of the elven people, so it’s not a thing that happened commonly and especially not for one’s own advancement in the royal hierarchy!
