As always, I learned something new. Great job on covering the differences between the cart and CD versions of the game. It's always my favorite part of the video as a CD owner. One thing that I will say about the game is that it seems like a missed opportunity to be a great Bump 'n' Jump clone. If they zoomed out just a bit and used the sprite scaling for the jumping, that could have been a great mode or a different game entirely.

Another really enjoyable and informative video. I regularly come away from these a little wiser. This time around I learnt that Rally Chase is an updated version of the original Thrash Rally, rather than just the Japanese title of the game. Looks like I made a good choice picking up a copy on CD over a cartridge. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the King of the Monsters 2 video, as that was one of the first neo geo games that caught my attention.

16:48-18:41 Dude! I will commend you for hacking the CD “Director’s Cut” in regard to teaching me more about making my game codenamed “Project Leviathan”. Even with NGFX-this is all new to me. So thank you for this review, and your contribution to not just the NeoGeo community, but most importantly: development for rookies such as myself! So far, this is my favorite episode of the series-without a doubt! Bought this game a couple years ago only to find out it didn’t boot at all. Then it got fixed as some solder had to be reflowed in the cartridge and it works again! Imported an English version of it from Italy, and I’m glad this is in my collection. SNK of America even made a steering wheel peripheral to playing this during their lunch break (account from Chad Okada) hence to what made me get this for my collection. All that’s left is League Bowling because I don’t want to own the one of the worst games on the system: Riding Hero and how it corrupts save data on non-SNK PCMCIA Memory Cards.

Great video! AES and MVS systems run at slightly different clock speeds, so I'm surprised how well the multi-system mode works

I was waiting for this comment! Didn't feel it was worth going into on the video, but my MVS and AES run at the same clock speed, so it wasn't an issue. My CMVS used in the video has a 24.16 clock crystal from a parts AES installed (because this greatly improves the video quality on the Framemeister) and the AES is a 3-4 revision so it has a 24.16 clock crystal. So the two systems used are matched. FYI, the original revision NTSC AES board did come with 24MHz clock crystal if it didn't include the daughterboard, which means those AESes were a speed match for all MVS boards from the factory. I believe that even if the systems have mismatched clocks, the difference isn't big enough to cause a communication issue. Although the player on the 24.16MHz AES will be at a slight advantage. Link a PAL console with an NTSC console though and I'd say all bets are off!

One of my favorite Neo Geo titles, started with the CD version when that came out and now have the AES version - love them both. Gotta disagree about the music, maybe its etched into my best gaming days so much but imo one of the best soundtracks out there!

lol, I know what you mean. Well in this case they went to the trouble of designing a link system for the carts, but only let you play one level. It amounts to a gimmick instead of something really special. It could've been Riding Hero's saving grace.

I loved Thrash Rally, one of the games i bought back in about mid 1993. I am fairly sure you could link 3 up using two home carts with an MVS in the middle provided the DIPs were set correctly on that MVS to be player 3, but i can't test this anymore because i only have one of each cart left now.

The MVS supports up to four linked boards, and this game seems to probably support up to 4 players. It's difficult to get confirmation online.

@@BasementBrothers the MVS version can be set up to do 4 players and that works perfectly fine if you do have 4 MVS copies yes. I can confirm that because i've done it, and i'm not the only one. I simply can't remember if we did test 3 players with two home carts and the MVS in the middle, i think we did and it only worked if the MVS had the correct DIPs set for it to be unit 3. Was 30+ years ago we did it with 4 MVSs, there really was no 'online' to post it to back then.

I think you're too harsh on the music for Thrash Rally. Sure it's buttrock, but the compositions and energy are fantastic and sublime. Ninja Combat's music just drones on, confused as to what genre it wants to be. Bleh. Great video as always!

16:28 Is this the cartridge music playing? It seems to be stereo here, with crash cymbals in the right channel (listening with headphones). It does have an annoying faked DSP stereo (echo) though. Too bad they didn't do an arranged OST for the CD with this and Magician Lord. Top Player's Golf and Baseball Stars 2 both sound amazing IMO.

My impression of Magician Lord is that they used just one of the stereo channels from the original version, and then they added an echo and faux stereo effect. I think all the early ADK games are the same.

I once goofed up when linking two carts together, accidentally connecting Thrash Rally to League Bowling. I ended up racing as a neon pink bowling ball , with the tracks filled with bowling pins. All of the other drivers would yell "HEY, LET'S BOWL!" as I passed them.* * OK, none of this is true. How cool and weird would that have been though?! :)

I didn't know the Neo Geo CD version had so many differences. King of the Monsters 2 is a good one, but hard. I haven't been able to 1-Credit Clear it, like I did with the 1st game. To do the high damaging wrestling moves when you grab the boss, you have to hit the button at the right time as they rock back and forth. Hard to time it right and it's very risky because you could be the one losing a lot of health if you hit it at the wrong time. So, I avoid trying to do the wrestling moves.

The 2-player link mode is impossible on the CD system. There is no link cable. Will the link mode work with the Rally Chase conversion using a cartridge that has a link port? That has yet to be tested.

One is an AES 3-4 with an RGB bypass mod upscaled on the Framemeister and the otheri an MV-1C with the Tian Feng encoder board upscaled on the Retrotink 5X. So of course since they're analog video signals they won't be exactly the same.
