In the 1980s, the sport witnessed the spread of plywood ramps and street style skating and the growth of local skater brands.
The skateboard components were dramatically improved, and the first professional stars began to shine, including Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mark Gonzales, Natas Kaupas, and Mike Valley.
Simultaneously, the ollie became the essence of vert and street skateboarding tricks and maneuvers.
Thrasher is a skateboard magazine founded in January 1981 by Eric Swenson and Fausto Vitello in San Francisco, California.
The publication was initially created to promote Swenson and Vitello's skate truck brand - Independent Truck Company.
Thrasher is the longest-running and most influential skateboard magazine of all time.
In 1990, the mag introduced "Skater of the Year," one of the most prestigious awards in skateboarding.
The winner of the award is announced every year by the editor of the iconic title.
Thrasher Magazine is published by High Speed Productions.
