I did my first ever thread grafts just over 12 months ago. All survived but I haven't disconnected them from their mother branches Will wait for another 12 months to make sure graft is a lot fatter than the entry point. Just slow down Dave 🤣🤣🤣

The grafted Japanese maple is grafted onto another Japanese maple. They use seedling maples for the stock. Most commercial growers don't take cuttings form maple trees as the take rate is too slow for them. they want around a 95% to 97% success rate with maple cuttings, this is nearly implossible.

man i would chop the tree down to the first brunch a use that as the new leader, it will get amazing taper and movement to the trunk...

I would have accidentally let some naughty words slip with that break! How tall is that tree?!?!? It looks huge! Can’t wait to see the transformation with the new lower branches.

Ah, too bad. I just found the update on this tree. For everyone else who is looking, Dave's Bonsai E386 has the journey of this tree. I was searching specifically for any of your content on thread grafting because I am attempting my first one tonite on a large Siberian Elm. @@DavesBonsai
