Angela, I have an idea for a future live chat- could you discuss quilting an antique or vintage quilt top. In the past I collected old quilt tops that needed a little love or repair or I even got a bunch of orphan blocks and put them together with some newer fabrics that were in the same style. Then I got stuck on how to quilt them. It's kind of the melding of the old (tops) and new( quilting) that is interesting to me. But I am not sure how to go about it.

You breath new life in to panels. I almost always avoid panels because they seemed restrictive. However, You've shown how to make it your own. If I win I would love the Yellowstone panel to remind me of a trip me and my kids took. We drove across country from North Carolina to Northern California after my daughter graduated from grad school. Your skills really shine in this new forum. Ren

Hello Angela- looks like you did a (1) flip binding and then quilted the wall-hanging unit ... likely you could do the (2) flip after quilting and just outline the edges. Or you could (3) bind after quilting or (4) fuse a whole backing piece, then bind with a varied width from cord to wide like a frame binding. Thank you for the awesome inspiration - I’m going to start with larger mug rug sizes so I can test the different bindings!!

I'm currently doing a panel I had printed at Spoonflower. It's a picture of my friend and saxophone teacher's album cover. Now you've got me wanting to really go to town on it but it's 40" x 40" and I'd never get it finished - my 1963 Singer 401 does not make for easy quilting, but I love it anyway. I'll definitely give this heavier quilting a go on a smaller project.

I’ve only tried thread painting on one quilt but it was so much fun! I’m an advance beginning quilter and a couple of things that helped by accident... I faced the back so that I didn’t worry what the backed looked like. Also I had extra room around the entire quilt to allow a little fiddling space, run off in a flowing way. The last was looking at the motif and repeating it or not. I found the process very freeing because the process really did not depend on how experienced you were at Quilting. My next quilt I’m planning on testing my batting and fusible combination. I’m thinking if I use a little fusible just at the edge it could be less stiff. So much fun, try it you’ll love it sew much 😎❤️

I lean towards plain backgrounds so that the quilting does show. The starkest contrast was a black backing with white thread. Yes my thread knots show, but so does the quilt design. Now, you should do what you like and are comfortable with, but it is fun to experiment.

I've never been one for starting off small so my first attempt at this was a large portrait quilt raw edge applique first then thread painting of the Dalai Lama, quilted it to the point were it was almost inflexible, so much fun broke a few needles and in the end, it looked absolutely NOTHING like him....

Waaay back in the mid-1990’s I taught myself to thread paint. I bought cheap panels at Hancock Fabrics(they were still in business, then) for a $1. I made a quilt sandwich and went for it. I was sewing on my 1973 Kenmore. I dropped the feed dogs, completely released the presser foot pressure, and took off the foot. There was no such thing as an FMQ foot back then. It was fun. The only rayon thread I could find in large spools or cones was Arc and it worked great, but my Kenmore sews with whatever thread I want to use.

Just watched your thread painting tutorial. This year, my son, for Christmas, asked for a National Park pass. He plans on seeing as many parks as he can (we will continue to renew for him-nothing like a gift that keeps giving). This summer he will take his daughter (12 yrs old) camping at yellowstone (all those years of camping when he was young turned him into a real explorer) I am soooo excited about all your national park posters. He lives in Colorado, do you by any chance have any posters (or know where I can find one) on White River National Park where he sent several days recently. I'm so excited...I will give him a yellowstone park poster for Christmas! I have seen all of your other videos where you have shown the Yellowstone panel, but had no idea how to work it. Thank you so much for the information. Also, is there a particular metallic thread you use? We lived in Arizona when he was younger- any ideas on Grand Canyon panels...did not see them on your website. When I put in "national parks" or panels...it takes me a strange website Thanx

I was inspired to thread paint from your previous video on a parks panel and loved it (used a Monet waterlilies panel) and then I moved to using a plain white fabric and quilting then adding permanent colour with Inktense pencils before adding yet more quilting. Have you tried this either combined with thread painting or in any other way? I've also experimented with honeybees.
