Great collection of tips, thanks. I am looking forward to the "how to set the tail stock accurately on center" video as I have just done a rebuild on my tail stock. Cheers.

Good morning Cliff. Once again excellent content, with well defined and excellently executed manual machining procedures/practices. The exampled use/application of metrology through the component development to verify and maintain reference datum was also an excellent addition. As a colleague in industry, your machining practices are always a pleasure to view. I’m further confident to say your content provides solid fundamental examples of best practices for those in the learning/apprenticeship phase of the trade. A quick follow up Cliff, we’re you able to procure and/or resolve the corrosion issues that was discussed in our last correspondence? If not, please touch base the offer stands. Again cheers and all the very best wishes to you and yours in 2023. Very best regards. Ron. From S.S.I.

Hi Ron. Thanks for your feedback and the offer to help. I have decided to try and tackle the problem at what I think might be the source. I had gaps in my shop double doors and southerly storms (from the ocean) may have been bringing salt contaminated moisture inside. So, this summer break I have been improving the fit and seal of the doors. I will see this winter if the issue is less. Cheers Cliff

Very nice video.. I think it shows the most important trait in a precision job and that is patience.. taking your time and checking numerous times and ways. Very informative watching a true master machinist at work. Thanks for sharing Cliff

Addendum to my last. In regards to your question on 6061 Aluminium. Commercially available 6061 (typically) has two forming methods. Hot extruded or cold drawn or sometimes referred to as cold finish. The two above noted forming methods produce material with many commonality’s and several differences. Ranging in Temper (T4-through T6 variants with correspondingly different ASTM designations), dimensional tolerances, mechanical properties. Typically from my experience, cold dawn material is preferred when machining practices are required. This could be a lengthy topic, so I’ll leave it at that. Hope this is at least a little bit helpful. Cheers. Ron.

Great video Cliff thanks for the tips, centering square stock is a fine art indeed! Never machined 6061, but I have recently made some small parts out of 6082T6, in preference to 1050, it's a lot nicer to machine too. I guess 6061 similar to 6082? Cheers Ian

I'm not sure I have ever happened to work on any 6061 (not as popular in Europe) but 6082 is a wonderful material for loaded applications and I also found 2007 alloy to be a charm to work with, allowing me to make more than 150 parts in a row without having to untangle a single chip!

Well yes, the 6000 series are a similar family of grades. "The 6000 series is an aluminum alloy family which contains magnesium and silicon as predominate alloying components". Cheers Cliff
