Threading the Bernina Activa Sewing Machine + Sewing Your First Seam!

Getting that sewing machine threaded for the first time can be a very daunting task! I’m breaking down the process for the Bernina Activa 220 and talking about similarities with other machines, including threading both the top thread and the bobbin thread. Then we talk a little bit about the basic controls on the machine, using a straight stitch and the zigzag and get sewing!
Bobbin Disclaimer
There are a lot of conflicting feelings about how to insert your bobbin- clockwise or counterclockwise. In the video, I do insert it counterclockwise which is opposite of how most people do it. I don’t find that it makes a difference for me but if you have a machine with tension issues, it may exacerbate the issue. A TOP-LOADING machine DOES go in counterclockwise so for me, trying to remember which one does which is just confusing so I personally load all machines all counterclockwise. But if you want to do what the professionals say, load a front-loading machine clockwise.

You saved my project lady, thanks. I'll be making some mid 19th century undershirts and I wanted to recreate some of the mass produced machine sewn / hand finished clothing of the period. I just got an older Bernina 145 so I could start machine sewing. I've only ever done hand sewing, I thought that was hard but trying to get this machine threaded almost made me give up.

You prob already know this but at 4:08 you use scissors to snip the freshly wound bobbin. The back of the lever that disengages the needle and stops the bobbin from overfilling is a blade for quickly cutting your thread after it's wound. Similar to the one that cuts the thread on the far left of the machine.😁

1:41 I haven't sewn since I was a child and have a very important commission piece where I have to sew part of the costume. This is the exact color of thread I need to put on the bobbin.

Per the manual, you installed the bobbin incorrectly into the casing. It should be clockwise. Thanks for the nice video!

Yes, the bobbin should be inserted clockwise, I’ve owned a number of Bernina’s for 20 years they are all the same for bobbin direction

My first project is sewing a paisley blue elf jacket (just like Hermey's in the stop motion Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer movie). This will accompany a Shoei RF1200 motorcycle helmet treated with EVA foam to look just like an elf in the movie. And most important turning a 2007 Honda CBR 1000RR into a fur covered motorcycle which looks exactly like Rudolph.

At 7:25 do you put the thread that's coming from the bobbin thread and put it thru the needle as well as the thread thata already in the needle hole?

nope! Just pull it straight back out of the throat plate- it should be below your fabric when you place the fabric under the presser foot.

10:50 Down in the fabric makes it easy to pivot for turns. This brings back so many memories!

Does your bobbin pop out often? Mine does. Your casing stays in when you put it in. Mine has to be held in while inserting the bobbin. My mother who has been sewing much longer than me has the same problem. She didn't have that problem with her old machine.
