I the city I was born we have a terrible problem with people destroying or "accidentally" burning down old buildings because if they get officially registered as historical within the law, any renovations have to abide by the traditional methods in wich the building was made in the first place. Sadly, this means that most of the people that live in these older estates, who tend to be of lower income in the first place (most of the city is banana farmers), would not have the money to keep living/fixing their own homes. So it's really common for a building to burn down after it starts getting considered for a historical certification. A lot of the really old german-style buildings the city had around 30 years ago are gone, and it really saddens me, but I can't really fault the people, I get upset at the laws and think the governmet should be paying for restaurations in case the owners can't, to avoid this sort of thing.

@@Naivuren I live in a house which was built in 1596. But I only rent the appartement, I would never buy it. The windows are a pain in the ass because they HAVE to be wood and have to have a certain look. Sure, they look cool, but they don't insulate very well and are not really practical. The stairs are also pretty...idk, crooked? I don't care, but I also can't see old people living in an appartement upstairs. And even the owners of the building are not allowed to change any of this. I like my appartement and it's cozy, but I wouldn't like to be responsible for it and the house itself.

I love that you were allowed to fix it with modern materials. Here in Germany there are thousands of properties in terrible condition that no one is willing to buy or even get for free because they are landmarked. That means that you need an army of historians to go through your property and they decide how you have to restore it. That means getting period correct reclaimed bricks, wood truces and roof shindles, no modern windows etc
@SkySilver7772 жыл бұрын
on one hand I understand the sentiment bc its important to try and preserve historic landmarks, but there should definitely be a middle ground. it would be better to put the old houses to better use rather than consume more resources to build brand new places imo. but where I live you see somewhat of the opposite where beautiful historic sites gets torn down and they build a gas station or a parking lot. so I think we gotta have some give and take when it comes to this.

I think Spain hit a happy medium when their government put a stop to all the tearing down of historical buildings. They made a law saying you could gut the inside if you had to, but the outside had to stay in original form. Thus a lot of the "antique" buildings you can still find there are actually quite modern on the inside, but the city gets to keep its cultural character.

As an architecture student, this whole process from start to finish is so interesting to watch. for the colours like white, gray, wood, and black is always a good base for interior since it will pair well with any color you pick and will always look good as long as you're disciplined with the color palate you choose. About the layout and floor plan though, it can be discussed further. Not so sure if you want to put the bedroom on first floor then kitchen on the second, since bedroom and bathroom/shower is considered private and protected while kitchen is more tolerable to a public setting like welcoming guests. If you have the chance, i would highly recommend switching up the floor plans. But really, the whole transformation is already fantastic. Might be a year late, but good for you!

In Germany you have to make the renovation similar in style to the era for listed monuments. I think its the same for our former EU partners on the islands.😁 A friend of mine renovated an old farm building an had to build in a second new door because the first was to modern in style. 8000€ for the trash.
@IvaanCroatia2 жыл бұрын
We got plenty of small houses like this in Croatia, but the issue is the material and renovation cost, it's like x10 than the price of the property itself. Also what Marc said, you are required to keep the windows, doors and the facade "in style" with the village, you can't have a modern solar house in a village with old historical buildings (makes sense).

Brilliant! 1. A see-through coffee table is the best idea in a small space cuz it makes the room look bigger; if you're unsure about it, you could put the pink side by the window; might be some interesting sunlight results too. 2. I would have put glass shelves in that one cupboard space under the skylight to allow more light in, and have some nice-looking cups or glasses on the lower shelf, and a wee plant or too on the top shelf. Again, brilliant, beautiful, cozy, perfect!

@MorningCoffeeDaily2 жыл бұрын
@@konradlangwald7082 Yes it Might. In this cases you need to isolate the house from the problem. If there is a stream nearby, groundwater, u need to identify it, correct it by diverging the direction from the house and making the foundations water proof. If not , expensive solutions you can even add inside the walls electric system to heat the walls. usually building a "pool" system around the house will help. I don't know how this came to be on my KZbin page this evening, but I'm so glad it did! What a lovely thing you did, rescuing that sad little building and turning it into a charming, romantic cottage. I got the impression that the house kept getting happier as you went ahead, Your choices for the interior were/are inspired--all white with the blue gray accents. If you ever get tired of editing videos you could easily become an interior designer. I love all of the windows, and especially the window seat, the perfect space to curl up and read all of those books you gathered into the old window niche. The glass table was an inspired choice. A wood table might have made the room seem cramped. Your clothes storage is minimalist to say the least. I wish mine was. The built in drawers are beautiful. Something interesting to know: You can see more through small paned windows like yours than you can from a large single pane. I learned that from a book I fell in love with nearly 40 years ago (Oy! can't believe it's that long ago). It's called A Pattern Language. It's about architecture --sort of, but not in the way one would usually think about architecture. It's about living spaces and understanding what makes us feel at ease in a space as opposed to what makes us feel uncomfortable, even anxious, for reasons we might not understand. I discovered the book by accident while visiting someone. The next day I went out and bought it. $50!!! And I had no business spending that kind of money. I read it all the time. It's almost like poetry. Everything you did in that little house was right out of that book, even though it would have recommended plastered walls instead of plaster board. However, the plasterboard will keep you warmer in winter and cooler in summer. I live in Italy in a house built in 1298. Definitely plaster and stone walls. Gorgeous, but the cold and damp seep in during the winter, and once the summer heats up, like the awful one we just lived through (are still living through!) the heat and humidity become overwhelming. I only have one question: Why did you fill in the fireplace? As I write this I'm sitting in front of the enormous fireplace in the kitchen, the thing I love most about my apartment in this ancient place. Maybe someday you'll decide to open up yours again. Who knows? 🥰 A beautiful, loving restoration. You should be proud.

A Pattern Language is my favorite book; giving so many cues as to what Humans love, like a bed in a nook, or 5 people sleeping in the living room, together!, and the size of a village square, no more than 35-people big, and it goes on and on, and was written in sections with a one-hour read of the whole book if you only read the BOLD bits on each page. It is a huge book, so a one-hour overview is a great way to begin. Such an inspiring book.

@@claireandersongrahamkeller2744 I just found your comment. I can't believe there's someone else out there who loves A Pattern Language. I'm so pleased you have the same passion for that book. You know it's looked down upon by "real architects". It's considered somewhat like a cult. I was shocked to learn that, but when I thought about how houses are built, starting after the war, just boxes. No secret places, no surprises, no soul. A Pattern Language is about building with soul. Am so happy to have found a soulmate 🙏
