I live in UK & our main town is dying due to mass closures of chain stores. However, all the mini shopping areas on the periphery are flourishing, because they are full of imaginative, independent shops, cafes & bars - like this Tofino but without the sea! I think this is how things are going, chain stores are replaced by Amazon, eBay, but if people want individual service & hand crafted products, these independents will now grow, whereas in the past, the chain stores would dominate them.
