Also worth mentioning is that Rendering Ranger R2 has no slowdown whatsoever. A rarity for snes/sfam games with that kind of action. Originally an us/pal release under the name Targa was planned but by the time the game was finished only Virgin Interactive was interrested in publishing this masterpiece, resulting in one of the rarest and most expensive games to collect fro the sfam. According to wiki, only 10k copies were ever made. Too bad for Manfred Trenz, he's kind of a childhood hero for me. Regardless, he would have deserved some ka-ching for his hard work. Not to mention that the world missed out on an awesome run and gun title. Which are few and far between.

When the Sega Genesis library was relatively small and there was no Contra or Gunstar Heroes to be had, Midnight Resistance gets you by in a pinch. One bonus is that the soundtrack is really, really good; worth listening to even without actually playing the game.

Yeah, the soundtrack rules.

I had a actually only discovered Bloody Wolf and Midnight Resistance when I used to go to college with a soft modded PSP that was filled to the brim with emulators. I think I tried just about every game on those systems haha. I never played rendering ranger, but it definitely seems to wear its Amiga game design origins on its sleeves

The Gears of War mention at the start amuses me. Contra is Run 'n' Gun, but Gears is Stop 'n' Pop. Either way, both are some of my favorite local 2 player co-op experiences. Great video!

Back in the early 90s, possibly pre SNES if my memory serves, a neighborhood kid and I played a ton of the DOS port of Midnight Resistance only for me to completely forget it existed until stumbling on the Genesis version during my college years. Such a fun game that isn't groundbreaking but still a good time.

A port I liked (althought 8-bit) was P. O. W. on the NES by SNK. But it's kinda-sorta a beat 'em up too.

Rendering Ranger could easily have gotten its own "Obscure Old Games" segment, it's rare to come across a Super Famicom game I haven't heard of, but that game is completely new to me. I'm not surprised Manfred Trenz is behind it, even by looking at it I thought it was a Turrican game. I also think it looks pretty good for being prerendered, it doesn't have that rubbery look that other prerendered games like Clockwork Knight and Donkey Kong Country had.

Bloody Wolf looks like a lot of fun, and I'm not sure why I was unaware of it before (perhaps my utter lack of access to a TG-16 has something to do with it...) Also, thank you for not ragging on Data East. It seems to be fashionable nowadays to trash talk them, but I've always been a fan of their output, even if it is B-tier.

If you look a really, really obscure 16-bit unknown run n' gun games, Time Slip and Nightmare Busters are good options, both for SNES. Time Slip is a very minimalistic game but is fun, and Nightmare Busters is a very, very hard arcade style game but fun too, better in co-op.

Fun fact: all of data east's early megadrive/genesis games have the same options menu... But they have a strange quirk Some games were supposed to have cheats like Atomic runner chelnov that unlocked the highest ammount of continues and lives... Unfortunately none of the printed versiona of those carts actiay implement it and so you're left with some versions with the stuff unlocked by default... Or locked to the defaults forever
