I recently found your channel and started watching your land nav videos, I have always been horrible and dreaded land navigation. I recently attended an Army course with a land navigation component, the course began at dark, needless to say I was flustered at the beginning. I took your advice sat down, drank some water, checked my points and azimuth and subsequently found all 8 points. Thank you so much!

These are good skills to know! I’m old school and don’t use gps that much. I jokingly say using gps is a sign of weakness! They’re ok but too many people have let their land nav skills deteriorate and rely on gps too much. What happens when your gps craps out? Between forestry work and military uses, I learned land nav many years ago. Give me my $30 compass and Topo map and I’m good to go! Good video!

I can do that. Until then - unless necessary don't make new folds in map. If weather is predicted - use a 1 gallon (or larger) zip lock bag or commercial map protector.

I had started watching another video of yours, but for some reason... something turned me off.... and I moved on. Today though, I came across this video.... and am pleased to let you know, that it is a good video with sound and well explained knowledge. I will go ahead and subscribe and look forward to more. You spoke of assessment and selection. When were you at Bragg? I remember back of all the days living off post in Hope Mills, double time down Ardennes , good old Smoke Bomb Hill. I don't know if you answered this question before, but I have tried to find a good answer and I haven't found on yet. I'm not even sure it matters, but my mind is going to fixate on it. I was researching the 1:24,000 scale (probably the same with all scales) ... 1:24,000 is called a 7.5 minute (1:50,000 is 15 minute) which equates to 7.5 minutes of latitude and longitude. Vertically and Horizontally, the degrees on a map have a 0.125 degree difference, even though the dimensions are different. If the dimensions are different, which means more grid squares vertically than horizontally, which means more distance covered vertically than horizontally on a map ... how is the degree difference and minutes of the lat and long the same?!?! I'm sure it has something to do with the lengthening of space over the earth which is a sphere, etc. I just can't find a real answer. Logically, my brain is saying, "shouldn't this map be square?" I hope I don't sound like a complete idiot. Great videos! Thanks for all the work you put into them.
@STOKERMATIC
@STOKERMATIC 3 жыл бұрын
UTM is built on a flat earth model that presents challenges in scale because the earth isn’t flat. LAT/LONG is built on spherical earth so measurements between can remain consistent. Hope that helps offer some thoughts to your question

Enjoying your videos. Very informative. Can you tell me how to plot an azimuth between two points A and B only using the lensatic compass as a protractor? Most of your videos show you using a military protractor to compute bearings; but what do I do if I only have a lensatic compass?
@STOKERMATIC
@STOKERMATIC 2 жыл бұрын
If you try to use a Cammenga like a baseplate, it’ll be best guess, as they aren’t set up for it. Draw line from current location to destination. Place center of compass on current location Read azimuth where line is Be prepared for it to be off.

Hey Stokermatic or anyone else who can help! I live in the PNW (Seattle) an I am really looking for a good place to practice my landnav skills because everywhere I go is so dense that walking thru the forest is kinda unsafe because one isn't sure where you're treading or if there is a ditch covered by plants/leaves, etc... Any ideas? Where is this place in the video? Somewhere like this would work well. Thanks!
