I've seen this movie 1,000 times. I only noticed recently that Ned was a natural gunslinger. He was so fast he inspired the German to become a quick draw, only for the German to determine that it was impossible to be that fast... it wasn't. Ned kills bats for them to eat... Bats... Which come out when it's dark and fly completely erratically. Ned shot multiple bats in dark conditions. Then, when forced to duel, he uses a gun WAY too heavy for him and STILL outdraws the German. Love it!!

21:25 How did El Guapo get ahold of the German fellow to get guns? This movie takes place in 1916. In Europe, World War 1 is raging. During that war, Germany was trying to form an alliance with Mexico, so that if America joined the war, Mexico would invade and the USA wouldn’t be able to join the war in Europe. These details were revealed in the Zimmerman Telegram (1917). In addition to trying to form an official, diplomatic alliance with the government of Mexico, it is widely believed that German agents were equipping criminal forces in Mexico to perform raids on border towns in the US. As the operations were covert, it’s really hard to prove anything; but it does align with German goals for the time period - if the USA is busy trying to secure its southern border, those are resources that aren’t being used to prepare for war against Germany.

Martin Short is a comedic genius who got his start on SCTV with John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, and Harold Ramis. He starred in the under appreciated but hilarious movie, "Inner Space" with Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. He created the character "Jiminy Glick" who did celebrity interviews on TV and in a feature length film. He also played a recurring character on "Arrested Development" that was a a fitness guru and will make you laugh until you cry. He is a comedian's comedian, and pops up all through the 80's in several films. He and Steve Martin are very close, and he is considered one of the nicest people in entertainment. El Guapo is played by Alfonso Arau. He really is the fourth pillar that carries this movie. It's a shame he isn't better known. He was previously in Romancing the Stone with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny Devito. There was also a village party scene with fireworks in that movie. Alfonso Arau is also a director. 6:58 Steve Martin standing in front of the movie billboard for The Duelling Cavalier is a reference to the musical film Singing In The Rain, with Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor. That film was set during the dying days of the silent movies, Hollywood transitioning into 'the talkies', the movies with sound. In that period many big film stars saw their careers ended from one day to the next. Like the Three Amigos did.

Martin Short was also in Tim Burton's "Mars Attacks!" It was his next movie after Ed Wood, and I think he himself said that it was probably the kind of movie that Ed would have made if he had the budget. It's very silly, and though I enjoyed it, I know that lots of people didn't, and I honestly have no idea if you'd like it or not. Caution: Martin Short's role is small and not very sympathetic.

You might enjoy Father of the Bride. I think you reacted to the original one…but the remake in the early 90’s (maybe late 80’s) is hilarious. Soooo, this is a spoof of "The Magnificent Seven", which is itself a western remake of the "Seven Samurai", and was later remade as a sci-fi "Battle Beyond the Stars" (with Robert Vaughn playing in both Magnificent Seven, and Battle, and playing the same character, essentially). And now you need to watch "Galaxy Quest". Other such remakes: Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa - the original, remade as: For a Fistful of Dollars - Clint Eastwood film that is part of a trillogy with Good, Bad & Ugly, and For a Few Dollars More. Last Man Standing - Bruce Willis Prohibition-era remake of the above. Omega Doom - Rutger Hauer remake of the same with post-apocalyptic cyborgs Ran by Akira Kurosawa - William Shakespeare's King Lear Throne of Blood by Akira Kurosawa - William Shakespeare's McBeth

There's an indirect Disney influence on this as well. When Steve Martin first came up with the idea, it was called THREE CABALLEROS, which was an animated film Disney made in the 40s when they were launching a charm offensive with Latin America - it teamed Donald Duck with a Brazillian parrot named Jose Carioca and a Mexican rooster named Panchito Pistoles - and there was a hit song that came from it that was covered many times. However, Disney would not let them use the title, hence Amigos instead. Also, when they're sleeping in the desert, they're singing a song called "Blue Shadows on the Trail," which is an original by Randy Newman (who of course went on to score several Disney films), but it's also paying homage to a 40's cowboy song of the same name that was written for another Disney movie of the era, MELODY TIME; it was in the "Pecos Bill" segment.
