I just purchased one kilo, (2)500g, of Gawith & Hoggarth Kendall Kentucky Vintage Cut. Because I just opened my jar with 4oz of it I ordered in early `24 and fell in love. It's a good Burley. But when I ordered that kilo...I also ordered (2)3.5oz of Tabac De La Semois: La Brumeuse. If anyone who loves Burley 'T' hasn't yet tried La Brumeuse, you should. But smoke it as dry as it arrives...and just pack the bowl and tamp firmly. It has a licorice "tin/package"-note, a chocolaty room-note, and I can only best describe its taste by saying it predominantly tastes like having just had a sip of good gin...followed by a puff of a good cigar.

As someone who really enjoys Burley blends, Haunted Bookshop is one of the best anytime blends out there. It has a chocolaty, nutty, almost hazelnut flavour to it. It is really more of a Burley/Virginia blend as the Virginia tobacco in it really does cut some of the harshness of the Burley that a lot of cheaper blends have. It also burns really nicely, to the point where I almost never need to relight my pipe when smoking it.
@ttrdf2 жыл бұрын
It also has a lot of perique. I like it that way, though 👍

Well, here in Florida the closest thing we have to "fall" is maybe a couple of weeks in February. The heat/humidity makes smoking outside almost unbearable for much of the year but ironically today it was only a high of 69. That's the first cooler day we've had since probably April, but by the weekend it's going to be back in the 80s. I envy those of you who can sit outside on a nice cool fall/winter day and smoke a pipe without sweating.
@tombrown1898 Жыл бұрын
Bradley, not being a big fan of Virginias, I have always smoked White Burley in the warmer months, which in the Ohio River Valley usually extend through October. After the first frost, the Latakia takes over. The only one of these three blends I've had is the Aged Burley Flake. Magnificent! But not as good as the original Edgeworth Slices, which were produced by Larus& Brother in Richmond, VA. Wessex claims that their Burley Slices is the original Richmond formula. Not by a long shot. Solani is the only thing out there that's even faintly reminiscent. Great video!

All great blends. Big and burley from C&D is a good transition from burley to latakia in the winter. It's got big burley flavor but also has latakia in it. It's rough around the edges in a good way and had decent nicotine as well. But if you smoke Irish flake you will be fine

So, there is a funny thing with HB. When you open a fresh tin it can have an off-putting aroma that can carry over to taste. But, if you slap it in a sealed jar for 4-6 weeks, it suddenly smells incredible and has all the flavor you always hear people rave about. Without getting scientific about it, I suspect it benefits from a bit of oxidation. I LOVE HB and I never smoke it fresh from the tin. YMMV

Solani Aged Burley flake has changed in 2022. I think the topping is now just licorice and no longer cocoa. Also, it only uses white burleys. Have not tried it yet. HH Old Dark Fired is another perfect cold weather smoke. Enjoyed this video.
@Hallonbot2 жыл бұрын
It has changed, and sadly not for the better. While still an excellent tobacco, it’s now far more earthy from the liquorice than it is nutty and “chocolately”. To my mind, this makes it completely different. Still tasty though.

I also enjoyed Burley London Blend from MB. I'm not sure if its for everyone, since it has an obvious chocolate topping on it, but its not gloopy like a Cavendish blend, and the topping accents the burley flavor instead of masking it, imo.

I actually think the Solani is more quintessential Burley, at least in the classic American Burley pipe tobacco sense. It really is close to Edgeworth and is kind of a dressed up Prince Albert. I see that they have dropped all pretense on the tin description and finally admitted it’s White Burley with a licorice topping. Which was and still is the classic casing added to Burley in every tobacco form. It’s funny that people always say they taste molasses when it’s really licorice

I picked up some Haunted Bookshop Cake since fall is right around the corner. The krumble kake seems to round out the rough edges and it's a little sweeter than I remember.
