Small update! I am surprised to learn that Raya has just been announced as an official Disney Princess over a year after her movie was made. I honestly at this point had figured that none of these ladies would be a princess so I was very surprised. I'm disappointed given that she isn't the best role model or representative of South East Asian culture but I'm also just surprised at Disney breaking the pattern they have followed for virtually every other post-renaissance princess. I'm not crazy upset or anything, this video was pure speculative fun. And I think theres a lot to unpack about this decision on Disney's part that I'm gonna have to think on. I probably won't make a vide on it, I'm too busy with school, but it sure is wild.

Great to see you making a video again. Honestly, up until now, I thought the only qualification for being a Disney Princess was being a role model Princess protagonist that belongs to Disney. Thank you for the reality check that it’s not that simple.

I actually wish they decided to lean in to Sofia's heritage a bit more. Not in a "she's the first Latina Princess" way, but to give her a sense of having her own identity. Miranda is meant to be Spanish-inspired and is played by a Mexican actor as well (which might be a bit messy in its own right). Exploring Miranda's culture and whatever identity Sofia had before becoming royal would've been pretty interesting after she basically mastered her royal role by season 3. I know it would've been "off theme" in a way since the only thing we're supposed to care about Sofia before coming royal is that she was a commoner, but exploring her heritage after that dust is settled likely would've opened some new doors for her character and new challenges for both her and Miranda who barely got any screen time or development to be honest. Even if not specifically focusing on faux-Spanish culture, Sofia being biracial is interesting in of itself. Although the show was always clearly not interested in exploring pre-royal Sofia topics.

But I do want to say this was a great video! Nobody ever really discusses Sofia or Elena in-depth and I think they're great characters in their own way. Elena being almost cut-throat when feeling betrayed is actually really refreshing. She tried to straight up punch one of the villains in the face in an episode and that's so cool to me. I totally agree on the show not deciding what age group it was trying to attract though. The tone was way too inconsistent and the writing could be totally cheesy one episode and then comedically clever the next so I never felt particularly excited to watch every episode. I'll admit there might be one or two I completely skipped at the time of premiere because I just wasn't feeling it.

Yeah I knew Raya was one. She‘s been advertized as the First souteast Asian Princess (i agree with you on what you said about her in your pinned comment update). I think it’s sad that Elena isn‘t an official Disney Princess… she was kind of hyped up as the first Latina Princess. But maybe Asha will fill that void?

*Tiny addendum, literally a month after I posted this, 10 years since Merida came out, Disney just up and made a Merida Designer Collection doll which is sparkly and high fashion-y. She has a purse and no bow and arrow. I have feelings about this I'm still processing. But basically, in case you ever wondered, it takes 10 years for a Disney controversy to die.

It is currently presumed that Raya is included in the Disney Princesses due to her image being featured in the official Disney Princess website and her Classic doll also states being part of the Disney Princess Classic Doll Collection. Even Anna and Elsa are featured in the website. They also appeared along with the other princesses in Ralph Breaks The Internet. Though there are possibilities that Encanto is so popular like Frozen that it becomes its own franchise or it can be both ways where Mirabel is part of the line up and at the same time Encanto is its own franchise. I just find it interesting that Raya's image is featured in the official website, despite not meeting one qualification you mentioned earlier. You can check it out yourself. But we have to wait and see for now if she really is part of the line up.

I really wish I could add images to a youtube comment because it would help me clarify myself, but unfortunately your mistaken. I’m not sure who makes this presumption but they are very misguided. Sorry for the literal essay I'm about to send you- it did not look this long in word. princess.disney.com/ While Raya’s image is on the webpage it is only featured in one location on the Disney Princess Website- as an ad for Disney+ where Raya is featured alongside Elsa, Moana and Anna with the caption “Celebrate the Ultimate Disney Heroes”. Not Disney Princesses, but heroes. Which means a separate brand item. Raya is also not listed in the list of ‘characters’ on this webpage either. Anna and Elsa are, but with a blue background rather than a pink one which designates them as Frozen Heroes rather than princesses. Additionally they are not drawn in the 2D ‘Disney Princess’ style which further differentiates them from the official princesses. This and their appearance in Wreck it Ralph is because of their being marketed closely with the princess franchise but they are their own separate brand. www.shopdisney.com/raya-classic-doll-raya-and-the-last-dragon-11-12-460014056019.html? As for the doll, you are again mistaken. The packaging and the description make no mention of the Disney Princess Line. The ‘shop more’ tags are for other Dolls and for Raya and the Last Dragon www.shopdisney.com/rapunzel-classic-doll-tangled-11-12-460012299937.html?isProductSearch=0&plpPosition=3 Whereas the shop more tags for the Classic Doll Rapunzel includes one for Disney Princess. Rapunzel also has ‘Disney Princess’ written on her box directly above her name, while Raya has the logo for her movie, Raya and the Last Dragon over her name. The lift-up inside flap on Rapunzel, again says ‘Disney Princess’ on hers but Raya’s again, says, ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’. The product description makes no mention of Rapunzel being a disney princess but it does let us know that it is part of the Disney Classic Doll Collection. (The description on the other official princesses is the same as Rapunzels and makes no mention of their being princesses) Additionally Raya is not the only non-princess to be part of this line with Tinkerbell, Esmeralda, Megara, Wendy, Anna, Elsa and the literal Beast all having Classic Doll line dolls making it very clear that this is not a princess line of dolls but a line of Disney Classic movie dolls. www.shopdisney.com/megara-classic-doll-hercules-11-12-460016290695.html www.shopdisney.com/esmeralda-classic-doll-the-hunchback-of-notre-dame-11-12-460017075352.html www.shopdisney.com/the-beast-classic-doll-beauty-and-the-beast-12-12-460014056279.html Encanto could very easily go the way of Frozen, it remains to be seen. I will say they are moving slower than I would expect but who knows? This video is meant to be entirely speculative and a little educational, so it’s totally possible that I’m wrong and Mirabel dosen’t become a princess. But I really don’t think Raya will be one.

Oh alright thanks for the insight. It's alright thay you made the essay. It aided me in clarification. It's just I found these information in the Disney Wiki which at times may not be always reliable. Encanto is really popular that even the CEO Bob Chapek is considering Encanto to be a franchise. So it is possible that Mirabel might have a similar situation with Anna and Elsa. They were planned to be part of the line up but due how popular and successful they are, especially their merchandise, they were not included in the line up but appear alongside the other princesses. I could see that happening with Mirabel if Disney goes this route but who knows. It might be both where Mirabel is part of the princess line up and Encanto is its own franchise for best of both worlds of having a successful franchise and getting a South American Disney princess at the same time.

Actually Snow White's age has never been stated canonically! It's mentioned in pre-production notes but unclear if it ever made it to the final product. The wiki doesn't even mention this.

I love you lagging on those premiere prices, Warner Bros was lucky at the time since Scoob was part of one of my fave franchises ever Scooby Doo so they got my money but paying more than the usual premiere price which would require also owning a Disney Plus account to watch a movie I wasn’t even that interested in from the advertising? Actually impressed how hard Disney pushed me to my actual limit when it comes to a company whose work I had been a lifelong fan of, they certainly found my limit with that scheme

There’s one thing you forgot to take into Account with Raya The epidemic you don’t think that what should be taken into account when it comes to profits

I sort of assumed it was inferred with the 'went straight to streaming' but you are super right. The pandemic super screwed Raya over since she didn't have a proper theatrical release or theatrical advertising.

@@Swiftstart I was talking more about merchandise and the working from home thing which probably didn’t help the budget of the movie but I highly doubt Disney is going to completely forget this movie it looks gorgeous And the fact they can probably associated with Getting through the epidemic
