"'Just an old fashion love song' ... coming down in three-part harmony". I noticed that the three singers sang the chorus in unison instead of harmony. Took me 50 years to get the joke. I didn't realize how much I love this band until now. They had a ton of hits on the AM radio but I never knew who they were except for "Joy to the World" since my dad performed that song with his band in the 70s.

Saw them around this time, at CNE Stadium in Toronto, my first "big" concert. Blew my adolescent mind with their polished act and brilliant vocals. Stage went dark to start, quiet clear chords started, still dark, is there something wrong, chords continue, then from somewhere near the back, a pin spot hit the face of Chuck Negron perfectly, and he started, "One is loneliest number that you'll ever do." When the first three part vocal started, bam, full concert lighting and huge perfect sound. They're in tuxedos with top hats and all. Just fantastic!

I came across a live at the forum album from 69’ and it blew my mind. Not sure if they used the same guys in the studio, but they put together a seriously kick ass live band. Great dynamics throughout the sets, but the energy on some of those jams are crazy intense. Must’ve been wild in that room

Well, Cory's gone, and Chuck is long split. Not much Danny can do about that, alas. They do have Paul Kingery, who's been doing Chuck's parts since the 1980s, so he has a certain amount of cred IMO. But Allsup hasn't been with them since 2021. Danny's boy Timothy Hutton (not the actor) plays guitar these days.

These guys were in pretty bad shape at this time. A year later it was over as it was. Overworked and over drugged. On a happier note I believe those a Ludwig drums. We had a set in studio / theatre that I worked in the 70's and still do. They could have been custom made but my bet is Ludwig made them.

Sorry TDN fans they were a mediocre group. Their last few albums were duds. Such as Coming Down Your Way, American Past Time not exactly hits. By the way yes ,I’m a big fan too. Just telling it the way ,I see it.
@marthawelch4289Ай бұрын
So you are a big fan of a mediocre group? And they are mediocre because they didn't write the songs that people still love to hear; but, they are still just "good" because they are terrific singers who can harmonize like few others. They are wonderful instrumentalists. They have interesting showmanship abilities. And they are great interpreters of said "written by others" songs. A lot of of other lauded bands had albums in their later life that weren't as popular as their earlier ones. There are many possible reasons for this: * the hard-living lifestyle gobbled up their health, their brain, their coordination. Or they died for a myriad of reasons. * their audience changed their own lifestyles - they got jobs that required 60 to 80 hours a week. Or, they got married and had kids and that took up their effort and time. There wasn't enough time in a day to turn on the strobe lights, "light up" other things, and listen to one song 400 times to immerse themselves in the experience. * Even when people had time and $$ to attend performances and/or listen intently to music, they wanted to hear the band's old songs because they were the soundtrack of their younger lives and brought back cherished memories. I remember when the bands would perform live and say, "Now we're going to play a new song" a lot of audience members would groan, "Oh, no!" Let's go back to the 40's, 50's, early 60's - the era of Frank Sinatra, for example. Nobody thought " Well, Frank Sinatra is a fantastic singer and every bobby-soxers' dream but he's really just mediocre because he doesn't write any of his own songs." It was a division of labor. The great composers of the era did their thing and Frankie did his thing. And often, it took a lyricist and a "melody maker" to write a song to hand over to Frankie. Then an arranger would work out the tempo and the various parts for the band instruments. Ol' Blue Eyes would show up, put in his more than 2 cents, and warble away. Sometimes it would take more than one "take" and further collaboration would occur. A record was produced and sent to radio stations. Frank would make the girls scream in front of their record players and their radios, in addition to concerts. Money was made and that's probably the most important outcome of the activity. Who got the credit in the eyes of the public? THE SINGER! The public didn't care if Frank didn't write it. He's the one that touched the hearts of the listeners. He's their greatest. Nobody ever bought a ticket to the show because Jimmy Van Heusen wrote the melody and/or the lyrics. Frank PERFORMED it and nobody called "THE VOICE" mediocre because he didn't write it.
@WoodytheLovebone.Ай бұрын
@@marthawelch4289 Like, I said that’s my opinion. Like most rock bands they are mediocre to good, like most rock bands their music is simple, repetitive and easy to play. Black and White to me almost sounds like a nursery rhyme, with a simple piano note theme on the intro, to me it sounds like it was written by a music student. I like them, I have their greatest hits which has a few good songs such as Shambala my favorite. That’s a great song to listen to while driving in the car. Like most rock bands their music has an irregular beat other than freestyle you really can’t do a structured dance such as east coast, west coast ,cha cha ,etc. So there you have it Three Dog Night one of the greatest mediocre to good rock n roll bands of all time, that never achieved greatness and will probably never be in the hall of fame.
