I was gonna mention this but someone beat me to the punch. Those takedowns are very often drilled for point sparring in shotokan karate. There are a few takedowns/throws that are part of the shotokan curriculum (they're all detailed in Funakoshi's Karate-do Kyohan, including the one that surprised me the most, which is basically your good old pile driver), but most gyms very rarely or never train them. A takedown + follow-up hit is actually scored highly, although most point karateka tend to focus more on sweeps than above the hip throws as those are often disallowed depending on the ruleset.

Especially in non full contact or other rules, the striker has to go for full contact knock out or crippling blow or the grappler has a distinct advantage to be able to get a grip. Usually every contest, even UFC there are rules limiting areas to strike like no knees or kicks to opponent on the ground, or elbow to back of the head , etc. But in no rules, a striker can hit back of the head, spine, eyes, throat, groin, best to know both like hapkido

I want to learn it mostly for self defense and have no classes nearby, I'll be relying on internet only, I don't have anyone else to try the advanced joint locks yet, in case I do get to the ground, I need to be able to defend myself, so which one is easier to pick up and learn as a individual practitioner? Final fight is a Karate vs Karate points match. It is not judo but of course owes a huge debt to traditional Jiu Jitsu and likely Judo also. In the UK and Ireland for example this type of points fighting is often seen. Karate styles like Shotokan are exactly like this and Wado Ryu which has a base in traditional Jiu Jitsu displays this type of striking into takedown, sweep or throw. A perfect example of this style is Lyoto Machida the former UFC champion. Judo is great but it’s a lot easier to take a guy down when you have already softened him up with a punch in the teeth. The hooking kick is called a hook kick btw 😊 great breakdown video, v interesting.

As a judoka, I am very confident as long as the opp has a jacket to grab onto. I will go as far as to say I can reliably win against any beginner even if they are strongman competitors (all types of wrestlers excluded). It's just too easy to get a sleeve grip and it's game over after that. In no-gi however, though I'm decent I can't be as sure

Pure Kyokushin's weakness against Judo is that some Kyokushin guys love to get in close and just hit their opponents with body punches and surprise head kicks. Problem is, that is exactly the range that basically gives Judo a free throw if the Kyokushin guy doesn't train any grappling.

Judo is one of the best martial arts along with Wrestling, bjj, kickboxing and Muay Thai. The only problem is that it is too dangerous to use. The technique of throwing on the concrete floor can cripple or even kill the opponent. So they are taught never to fight with normal people on street. One of my friends is a professional judo player. He said he can decide which part to hit when throwing an opponent to the floor. He also said that he is trained to block punches and kicks. He said that once the opponent is wearing any kind of clothing, he can knock the opponent to the ground. He once had a fight with professional taekwondo players, and he said he was able to subdue 3 people with judo alone.

There are two professional judo players around me, one is average and one is tall. However, both are broad-shouldered and muscular and thick. so they are not of a physique that ordinary people would try to fight. I've heard about their training. they train with ridiculous intensity. To learn judo, you have to be prepared to some degree. You will realize how their bodies are made.

the fight at 4:00 isn´t Judo vs. Karate, it´s Karate vs. Karate! It´s modern sport Karate. I don´t know the rules today, but in the early 2000´s throws were allowed, as lang as you don´t grip longer than two seconds. So you could threw and follow up with a striking technique. The throw doesn´t score points per se, but you score higher than with a single punch if you follow up. The rule are in constant change, but this style with throws becomes famous with the success Rafael Aghayev, and we started to train more throws and judo falling techniques as competitors 20 years ago.

A black belt in Karate, Gymnist, The first to do a back flip off the top rope. 5 foot 8 max. approxently 235lb. Technical wrestler like Bret Hart, fast and a lot of power and very good gentleman in real life. Montreal wrestlers. Dino Bravo, Dino Britto, Andre the giant, yes many of them came from france and moved to Montreal. I stopped watching wrestling after there was no more Ronnie Rawdy Pipper. I wanted to be like Edward Carpentier. And I did it with friends as a kid in the back yard for 25 years. As well, friends who came from other arts like Judo, Boxing, kick boxing, Kung Fu. and jujitsu. They all loved my father's dojo 46x68 feet. There is no matts just a huge concrete floor in the basement of the Ottawa boys and girls club for over 25 years. We were 80% self defence 20% sport. Thank you for this site it brought me a lot of good memories except body slamed on concrete floor it hurts. No me but, others I did to. The end😁😁

For strikers to equality of technique here, there should be no head gear/pads, because the grapplers (judo) can apply full power in locks/chokes/holds. it should be bare knuckle and bare foot on both sides. This is the only way you can determine if striking martial arts or jujitsu/judo type marital arts, have the edge, in cases where each exponent sticks exclusively to either striking/grappling. Balanced martial artists are proficient in both, but these fights are about one, against the other, so full contact/no protection/gloves.

The fight at minute 4 was not Karate versus Judo, it was in my opinion simply a Ju Jutsu tournament fight. Modern german Ju Jutsu includes techniques of Karate, Aikido, Judo, bjj, Sambo, wrestling, Boxing, Luta Livre, Escrima, Kenpo, Muay Thai and Kung Fu. Its a sophisticated hybrid style. They do sparring and tournaments where they make kumite, Kickboxing and submission wrestling in the stand up and on the ground. If you watch Ju Jutsu tournaments, you see fights very similiar to russian sambo or chinese sanda tournaments. It goes in both directions, point fighting with throws or strictly punching, kicking, throwing and groundfighting. A more civilized and softer version of mma. Greetings from a german Ju Jutsuka.....by the way, nice video....

In the first fight, if he's Kyokushin he's only a red belt, which means he's probably been training LESS than 6 months. And he's up against a black belt in Judo. Hardly a fair fight to start with.

My man, Karate has sweeps and CQC-style grappling. That later video with the bald kid with red gloves is clearly in a Shotokan Karate tournament, where throws like this are allowed and a part of the Karate kata.

The last guy isn't cross Karate judo. It's just points karate as old karate had alot of judo Jujitsu throws and points karate would sweep and throw all the time especially back in the 90s.

4:21 Fourth one is not judo vs karate. They’re both karate guys. That hip throw is taught in karate as well

There is no judoka in the fourth match. That is Olympic karate where throws are allowed. A throw followed immediately by a punch is worth three points.

The throw followed with a strike from above is a relic from old judo. You see it in texts a lot but since its more of a sport nowadays no one does it. Seems silly too considering the easy armbars available in that position.

Any grappler should be able to easily double leg or upper body takedown a karateka with no grappling fundamentals straight to the ground and submit him

Judo combined with some form of striking/kick-boxing, is an unbeatable combination, even after the silly rule changes. BJJ is impressive in it's way, but too adapted to MMA rules.

Such styles exist: combat sambo, kudo, pankration, military styles (e.g. post-Soviet hand-to-hand combat, U.S. MCMAP).

I don't see how BJJ is more adapted to MMA rules than Judo

@@TKZprod A lot of no-gi, if not the most these days and unlimited time on the ground with no pins, mostly. But I would also argue that emphasis on guard-pulling and lower-body takedowns. In Judo there is a reflection on this in the Ippon rule, which at least used to reflect that a flat on the back higher oriented throw would mean incapacitation (even death) or such a stun that the fight would be over, if done on a non-flexing surface. Kind of like a knock-out.
