Orchids are a very old lineage of flowering plant. The major lineages began to split some 90 million years ago. Dendrobiums and Epidendrums likely split from the same common ancestor, having diverged from each other after the breakup of Pangea, with Dendrobiums populating Asia and Epidendrums (and all related genera) populating the new world. Interestingly, some orchid genera have maintained a remarkable amount of genetic preservation from the last common ancestor. You have the Catasetinae of the new world, Ansellia in Africa and Cymbidinae in Asia which have long been separated yet are still genetically compatible. While on the flip side of that, not all Dendrobium are genetically compatible and there is even less compatibility among the Phalaenopsis. Evolution is a strange beast.

Just came here to say I loved "the devil wears Prada! Ahaha caught that refrence! Lmao! Also I just acquired the Yukidaruna dendrobium *the king* and I am excited to see it bloom!. I googled the orchid name and your video came up! Thank you for that helpful tidbit of information! I've grown dendrobium nobile types before with great success so this is another adventure for me! I love orchids too! Ahah! Have you ever tried growing monnirara witch craft mellenium magic? It's a black orchid. Does not need a green house. I in canada put it outside in summer and in winter it goes dormant so needs almost no watering unless it starts to wrinkle.

Thanks for watching! No, haven't tried that one - still working on my Catesetum types!

Nice gift - 📚 for an orchid grower 💚👍😁. Thanks for sharing, blooms on this one are gorgeous 😍 ,the purple center and size of the 🌸 makes it stand out from any other ones. What I learned in my experience with Nobile type is ....if the 🌱 gets food or h2o - too early at the end of their dormancy ,canes will send kaike or 🌸 spike with little roots attached to it 🥴. Live and learn ,as they say 😁. Happy growing 😊🌻.

Hi Matthew, great video, lovely dendrobium, thanks for sharing and care tips. It's funny that my dendrobium noble is in bloom here and it's winter here! Thanks for sharing and happy growing 😀.

Thanks for watching! Yes - they can dance to their own tune which can make care a bit tricky!

Hello again, Matthew, Thanks for showing us these Dendrobia. My nobile is pure white, and has the same soft canes as your yukudama (I think you said). Please look in your lovely book and try to identify a pure white specie with a large flower the same size as your yukudama for me? I'd be very grateful to you. Mine grows rampant in large pots, dappled sun, out of doors all year round, and a mass of white flowers, which are just starting now.... Thanks very much. Kind regards, Dave, Cape Town.

Hi Dave - no luck I'm afraid - probably a hybrid? The only nobile type species with pure white flowers I know of is Dendrobium moniliforme which is not a big plant and has average sized flowers.

@@helloplantlovers Thank you for looking, Matthew. It seems your book, although Australian in origin, refers to Dendrobia of the world, so I'm surprised it does not include a pure white variant. Never mind - thanks for trying!

Love your video on nobilies,I have two, one very big with alot of canes and leaves but haven't had flowers for some time not sure if I should change medium in pots also have leca beads on top of the medium think it's creating alot of moisture as leca beads get mould on them. My other nobilie has less canes and foliage also no flowers plus some of canes very wrinkly and dry looking, should I cut the dry canes?

Thanks for watching! This type of Dendrobium does well in a free draining large bark mix so perhaps consider that when next you re-pot them. And good light is the major issue in getting flowers, that and a dryish winter rest. I wouldn't cut any canes unless they are actually dead. Good luck!

Hey matthew! Just thought i'd come on here and ask you for a tip - I live in Norway and I'm still quite new to orchid care. In Norway we have winter at the moment, which means basically just a few hours of daylight a day for pretty much 3-4 months a year. So i am im fact a little worried wether my orchids get enough lights, i currently have phalaenopsis, dendrobium nobile, onchidiums and a cymbidium. I try to keep them all in the window so they can take advantage of the little light i have, though they do get sun all day as my window is facing the low sun all throughout the day. Do you think my orchids will be fine? In summer we ofc have quite strong sun and I will be careful not to burn them- but maybe i do need to invest in some uv light? Would love to hear your thoughts! Thank you in advance :)

Hello! Alas I can't really help you I'm afraid as I don't use grow lights. The only thing I could suggest is try to find an orchid growing club/society/group in your region and find out how other people manage winter? How long have you had your orchids? Have you managed to get any to bloom in your care? Plenty of winter light is important for some species as it triggers flowering. So I can't help I'm afraid but I'm sure someone in Norway can! Lets see if any else here is from Norway and can give you some tips! Good luck!

The youtube channel run by MissOrchidGirl shows how she grows her orchids in Cyprus under lighting. You should get some tips there....
